how will you know at 23:59? Do you play through or lead up to midnight playing the last tune at 5 to midnight? Just interested whether people apprach the gongs in a different manner :scared:

I will have three laptops plugged in, one is my main laptop for the gig, the second is my backup, and the third will have Big Ben striking 12 , followed by ALS, already cued up and on a time sync, the fader will be up, so I do not have to worry about the time, at exactly the right time the third laptop will fire in over whatever I am playing with the chimes, I then know I have the timings correct, it may well be in the middle of a song, but obviously I will keep an eye on it, and try to adjust accordingly.

I shall be in the party type bits, Ben's chimes fire at midnight, OLS followed by Best Years of our lives by Modern Romance, then possibly Gonzales, sylvester etc.

 

Note: It is 12 midnight on the first bong. Not the 12th. The timing mechanism is set to the first strike, otherwise the chimes would have to fire earlier for each hour with more bongs than the ones with only two for example. Clear as mud.

Same here, but it will be at 120bpm.

 

I have found over the years that the crowd always wants to count down in time to any music playing. (One year I tried cutting the music just as I started the count down, but I didn't feel that the atmosphier was as good.) So playing some that is 120bpm (or close and pitched up/down to be 120bpm) allows them to count the seconds in time to every other beat.

 

Like many others I use pre-recorded chimes and a radio controlled (atomic time signal) clock to keep the countdown and chimes spot on.

Am thinking of playing Summer of 69 on 4th December 2009 at 2107hrs too, I can't believe how many people know what they are going to play at a certain time, what happens if you have a load of 60 year olds at your function ?

But what if these tracks don't go down well with the audience on the night?

 

I don't think you can ever pre-plan any set - unless you are a club DJ playing to the same crowd week after week and know their musical tastes inside out - and even then, you would still do better choosing the best tracks to play live and on the spot.

 

People are paying for your expertise in judging the mood and atmosphere, and selecting the best songs to play. Anyone could be a juke box.

I really dont have a clue what it will be and tend to go with the flow and what has been requested etc.

It will be a floor filler, although floor is always full by then anyway.

I don't tend to plan a playlist, I work better that way and find it easier to take it how it is on the night, I try not to be too predictable.

Agreed the need to be flexible needs to be kept in your head, but I think with the last song of the year, it is usually a party floor filler. Most folk on here know the nature of the function/venue & clients attending therefore I don't really see it as an issue if you want to play Status Que at 23.56 or Europe. In many ways it's quite nice to have a plan :dan:

Confused and only my second New Year Disco. on the chimes you have the lead in chimes, which last 24 seconds, so do the crowd count down 10-0 over the lead in chimes, to hit 0 on the first proper chime? Do you edit out the lead in chimes?

I've always had the countdown to the first chime on the stroke of midnight, ....happy new year.....followed by Auld Lang Syne and then party music which may be kicked off with something like fiesta or other up tempo material.

I haven't a clue. I don't plan very much. I will arrange it so that the last track finishes with about 10 seconds to midnight. For the last 50 seconds I will have a coutdown running simultaneously on the TV screens. There's a great Easy Karaoke track (I think on EZH041) that does a 60 sec countdown with a big booming voice over the top, followed by a karaoke version of Auld Lang Syne so everyone can join in.
