Djing Aboad For The Summer

Recommended Posts

don't we all! Trouble is most of these enquiries are only made a few months in advance from experience (around this time of year), and by that time you've probably booked most of the summer up?

That's what I find anyway! If anyone knows any ways round this let me know :-)

I would love to do this also, however I have heard of some DJs falling into a trap before, especially ones in the bar and club market.

Imagine working 4 or 5 nights a week in the UK normally, you decide to take a 3 month stint in a sunshine resort Djing. On your return in October all your previous UK gigs have been filled and you are left with nothing.

A good friend of mine had this happen to him and it put me off ever going abroad! I cling to my UK residencies like glue! If I could reasonably get cover for say a month, and be assued I could return after I would do it though. A summer DJing in a Spanish or Greek resort would be superb!

Gonna share my dream with you.

When I am a little more financially secure (and I will be) gonna by a smart red van and load all my gear into it.You may not realise this but your State and Works Pension is still paid if you have a foreign address.Gonna buy myself a hacienda or residence close to some hot coast.

May buy myself a few pedaloes or something to keep me busy during the day and send myself up in the evening as an ageing 60's/70's/80's DJ.(Currently a specialist in those years).

Don't know why the van is red.....but its my dream.....OK??

Anyone else with a similair dream??

Similar to exbutlin really. I am going to "retire" to Tenerife in about 8 years time. That is when the mortgage finishes and we will then also be child free! My youngest is nearly 15 now.

Having done summer seasons my view is not to do it whilst you have residencies here for the reasons stated above by Jon.

have fun anyhow..

I Lived the dream between 1984 & 1986. I worked at Tokyo Joes in Magaluf, Mallorca.

1987 season Bianco's in Alacante.

If you are considering doing this its not all holiday and having fun trust me.

You will be expected to help out in the venue a couple of hours before and you will need to get contacted hours of work if you don't expect to work from 8pm until the early hours (depending on what time the club / bar closed many now stay open until 6 or 7 am) for a minimal wage.

I have a couple of friends who are still on the circuit one is in Dubai working in and staying in at he hotel he is working at. He has chosen the hotel route as it is set hours a 1 am finnish and accommodation supplied.

Remember If you get an interview ask about accommodation for yourself or you will get there with no where to stay.

you may think the wage is good but take out your cost living and music costs its not so good.

But on the bright side it is great fun but long hours.

If you buy DJ magazine you will find adverts looking for DJs in the back.

Or go for a long weekend to the place you fancy working at & try some door knocking, this worked for my friend in Corfu a couple of years ago.

i quite fancy dj'ing in somewhere like zante/malia/kos etc for the summer, but have no idea how i'd go about trying to get a residency

any ideas?

Why confine yourself to one resort, why not contact the cruise lines and see the world instead?
