Just out of interest, are you aiming yourself mainly at the young crowd (18ths, 21sts etc.) Unless you are then it is not really necessary to have two subs, unless it is a large gig. Don't think that bigger is automatically better, although a setup with the top speakers on poles and the bass speakers on the ground is certainly preferable to those 'all in one' units you suggested before, which weigh a ton and cannot project the high end very well due to their low height. The package you suggested does not come with amps and so you need to take this added expense into account. At the end of the day it is up to you and if you listen to them and like the sound then you won't go far wrong, as long as you buy from a reputable manufacturer and dealer. My advice would be that, unless you absolutely must have the floor shaking from the start (and more importantly all your clients will want this too!), then concentrate on getting a pair of full range speakers and if you have money spare then you can get 1 sub. You can always add a sub on down the line but to replace your main speakers later will be very costly

Never used them, so I cannot give you any review nor contstructive criticism.

They are better than Jamo's though :D

yeh im going to specialise in hed kandi and ministry of sound for the younger ones as there is not alot arond like that (well not round these parts) and we all know younger like a bit of bass (i should know i am a younger one ha ha) and offering the younger ones that like electro and things like that a proper dj on proper vynil decks. so it will be a bit different for them and they love a dj on proper decks

If you're aiming at a younger crowd then you can't go far wrong with a couple of 18" bass bins as they look and feel the part!... I know my HK LR118 18" bass bins kick out a shed load of the low stuff...

Allot depends on your transport situation... If you travel to gigs by car you'd be better off with a smaller system that will still do the job but perhaps no pack as much of a punch... On the other hand if you have a van of any sort... Go for the bigger 18"

Just adding to James' post, you need to work out what you can safely lift.

I'm very careful with this - if you hurt your back, it will scupper your DJ antics for a while, and possibly cause problems throughout your life.

If you will always have a roadie, then big speakers are fine (assuming you can transport them!).

You don't want to be lifting 40Kg+ subs out of a car on your own - you will hurt yourself...

I've got 2 15" active subs - approx 38Kg each. Last night was their 1st outing, and the use of a trolley board (home made) made it easy to move them around.

I wouldn't carry them myself.

I've heard this set but they were used by a vocalist not a disco, and they traded them in after a year because they needed to fill bigger venues (ie theatres and halls). I'd say that if they are sold as a set then JBL obviously market them as a 4-box set and they're tuned/voiced to be used like this. I think they'll be fine for your average mobile disco, JBL are making some nice quality stuff nowadays.

Ive had a pair od JBL ST 500's for about 10 years now and they are the dog's knackers ive only had one slight bit of trouble but as long as you look after them they will give you years of service and they can be carried up stairs and easily carried on to high stages....
