Dukesy 0 Posted March 13, 2009 Report Share Posted March 13, 2009 Apple has released version 8.1 of its iTunes software, which patches some security holes, speeds up iPod syncing and introduces a few new features. The most interesting of the additions seems to be something called iTunes DJ, which allows anyone with an iPod Touch or an iPhone and the Remote app to request songs from any stereo system that is running the iTunes DJ program. Say, for example, you are at a party, listening to music over a system controlled by iTunes DJ. Using your iPhone, you can now look at all the songs that are available on your host's computer and choose which one you'd like to hear next. You can even interrupt the song that's currently playing to put on the song you want to hear -- which seems like an invitation to anarchy. I greatly look forward to the ensuing fights. The thing is that guests cannot interrupt what is playing, but can request songs by viewing your playlist. I am going to try to play some tracks from it at a gig at some point. I do think that in the future we wont need to carry our music around it will all be available any where.... It only works over a wi-fi network though, so will only be happening in some of the hotels I work in. That looks quite groovy - particularly since I can access the net via 3G rather than needing a wi-fi connection. The only thing is that it doesn't work on Macs. I do agree that it will get to the stage where we don't need to carry music with us, whether whilst I'm a dj or long after I retire, I don't know. At least with the old fashioned way, you still excercised professional discretion about what would and wouldn't work from the text content and when and if to play it, with this automatic way you are taking that experience out of the equation, and by allowing guests to just randomly select material to go into an automatic queue to be played when the guests or a microchip felt like it, could mean that a 60's song is followed by 2 Unlimited, followed by a smoochy, followed by 'Old Shep'. Yeah, that'll work well. Another 5 minute wonder aimed largely at the consumer DIY party market i.e 16 year olds and their houseparty's. I think our jobs are safe, and personally I think our businesses and economic future have more to fear from the idiots in power as opposed to a little black box. In typical style, he hadn't been on the floor all night. I always keep an eye on who dances the most and give them preference for requests. IE, I'm more likely to play a request and sooner from someone who dances more. Didn't recall seeing him at all. It's weird, they spend all night ignoring you then come pack up time they don't want you to leave :ouch: Link to post Share on other sites
