Can't say I am the least bit surprised that the huge marketing campaign to promote a permanently half naked woman has ended up with her reaching top spot. Personally, I think she has nothing in her closet, pun intended. She can't sing, she has no persona, she can't dance and her songs, presumably written for her, are instantly forgettable. This sort of garbage would not have made the Top Forty 10, 20, 30 or even 40 years ago.

I feel better now

If looks were all so important, then Katy Perry would win my vote. If only her fashion sense was like "ga ga's"

yes it would in my opinion ! people seem to think the charts are always great there has always been rubbish in the charts

number ones like

wandrin' star from 1970 how many of you were playing that the following year?

ernie the fastest milkman in the west in 71?

Green door shakin stevens which to be honest he had a big following but was just a poor elvis impersonator in my opinion 1981

every loser wins nick berry 1986

spring to mind

etc etc

there have always been gimmick records and artists built up to levels they cant reach ..lady Ga Ga has had two good dancy tunes and probably wont have many more ..she is no worse no better than Sonia or Robin S imho

I believe she does in fact write and play instruments and went from a predominately hip hop label to a more main stream one as even the hip hop label could see she had appeal and signed her up but unfortunately her talent was not in there genre.

She has written songs and sung backing vocals for other artists too.

I am forty next year and i hope i dont get the mentality that modern music isnt as good as it used to be each is valid for its own time..I do like great 60's 70's 80's 90's and 00's tunes but i don't wear rose tinted glasses i remember the wurzels joe dolce zig ziz sputnik drs in the tardis and babylon zoo too

Ooh Robster, you've picked some classic tunes there! I love all of 'em, aside from Nick Berry! For the record, I never said modern music wasn't good.

Over-hyped artists have always annoyed me and anyone who relies on their nakedness to promote themselves gets zero respect from me. If we were having this conversation 20 odd years ago I would have been slating Sabrina. Who was that Australian soap star who made a decent record but she was completely naked in the video..? That's the level I place GaGa at.

OVERHYPED THINGS THAT WERE ABSOLUTELY TOSH:

Blair Witch. A marketing masterpiece; anyone interested in guerilla marketing or modern day promotion techniques should read as much as they can about how this film was marketed. The film itself is just the most awful piece of garbage I have ever seen.

I Am Legend. This is a poor film. It's quite short and full of holes. It is also very s-l-o-w. If you take out the shots of a deserted New York you could probably knock another 10 minutes of its length, too. What moves it from being a poor film to an appalling film, for me, was the hype. Will Smith telling everyone how great it is, Jonathan Ross kissing his backside (I lost a lot of respect for Ross after that interview and film verdict) and numerous other 'trusted reviewers' all saying how great it is. I'm sure there's loads of you who think it was a great film, I think you are probably being seduced by the Smith magic. Imagine an unknown actor in the lead...would you have watched it and enjoyed it as much? I doubt it.

Christ I'm in a bad mood today! Sorry guys, normal service will be resumed tomorrow!

I don't think she's got the talent to be the next Xtina or Britney, but she's released a couple of decent pop dance tracks that I keep getting requests for, so she's hot right now, will she be hot in 12 months time? Crystal ball says no.....

Who really cares, if she's still hot I'll be playing her tunes, if not the next big thing will be riding the charts.

I despise Lady Gaga,

Shallow as it is to comment on her appearance, she clearly thinks this is an important part of her 'brand' and key to her 'appeal'. In that case I feel less guilty about saying she is an ugly, dumpy midget.

Her songs are at best bland pop-by-numbers drivel, and at worst morally irresponsible tripe encouraging underage girls to go out half naked, get so drunk/wiped out that they don't know what they are doing and sleep with anyone and everyone.

I don't think she has a particularly good voice either.

I like good dance music, this isn't it. I like a lot of modern music, but very little has impressed me in the last 8 months.

Oh, and don't get me started on Katy Perry...

Can't argue with that, CS. If she can perform with a live band then maybe I have misjudged her. Maybe the topic should be more about my dislike of people who think they can become famous by wearing next to nothing and having a load of suits behind them...until the next big thing comes along.

Christ, why have I become opinionated all of a sudden! :D

Oh dear ! Dont think bad morals can be blamed on lady gaga though , think parents, enviroment, alcohol availability and peer pressure might have some influence. Even though our friend Lady Gaga did work as a stripper she also has been playing piano since the age of 4,wrote and performed her own songs at the age of 14, was selected as one of 20 pupils for an elite music school, had hits everywhere else before the uk and actualy has a REAL drummer in her band. So hype or not she seems successful and lets face it you have to have a half decent product for it to work ,just look at the hype around u2`s new mind numbingly boring new album that appears to have died a death here in europe despite the enormous hype.

I don't blame Lady Gaga for loose morals, but I do accuse her of glamourising such behaviour to an impressionable audience of mainly early teens.

It's a sad state of affairs that, because of the vast amount of c:cense:p, manufactured artists out there, anyone who uses real instruments or does a bit of writing has instant credibility. I've messed about with guitars and keyboards since I was 8 and I've written lots of songs, it doesn't necessarily mean they are any good or that I am a gifted musician.

Myleene Klass is a very talented, classically trained pianist. But she only achieved commercial success by going on a reality TV programme and singing other people's bland songs. And she only remained in the public eye by prancing about the outback in a bikini. That is, sadly, the world we live in.

It's refreshing to see popular artists using real instruments and actually performing live, but rubbish is rubbish. And, IMHO, Lady Gaga is just that.

entitled to your opinion young sir , but messing around on a guitar and writing songs is a bit different to having worldwide selling hits dont you think? i think her level is probably a bit higher. Promoting loose morals well why pick on her? thereare loads of examples of people who went before her who have been accused of the same, eg Elvis , Debbie harry etc etc

In all honesty, I'd rather stick to messing around with my guitar and writing and playing songs that mean something, than having worldwide hits with the rubbish she performs.

As for Elvis, I can't think of a single lyric from any of his songs that promotes immorality. But I'm not singling out Lady Gaga, I would direct the same comment at several artistes, however this thread is only about one.

We clearly aren't going to agree, but that's what makes life interesting.

maybeCS was referring to (below) about the 'hip shaker'? I do remember watching a documentary about his life that said similar comments. I can not think of a song where 'The king' is glamourising naughty behaviour....unless we look deeper into meaning from hits like 'Jail House Rock'!!

However, lets not forget that rock and roll was considered totally immoral back in the day. I know - I watched Footloose! :D

Elvis did not drink, but he abused drugs most of his life. He began using amphetamines and Benzedrine to give him a lift when he began his rock & roll career in the first half of the 1950s. It is possible that they were first given to him by Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips, who helped popularize Elvis’s music by playing his songs repeatedly (Goldman, p. 9). The drugs “transformed the shy, mute, passive ‘Baby Elvis’ of those years into the Hillbilly Cat.’” He also used marijuana some and took LSD at least once. In her autobiography, Priscilla Presley says that Elvis was using drugs heavily by 1960 and that his personality changed dramatically. After the breakup of his short-lived marriage in 1973, Elvis “was hopelessly drug-dependent.” He abused barbiturates and narcotics so heavily that he destroyed himself. He died on August 16, 1977, at age 42 in his bathroom at Graceland, of a shutdown of his central nervous system caused by polypharmacy, or the combined effect of a number of drugs....

Elvis often exhibited a violent, even murderous, rage. He was “notorious for making terrible threats.” He cooked up murder plots against a number of people, including the man his ex-wife ran off with and three former bodyguards who wrote a tell-all book about him. He threw things at people and even dragged one woman through several rooms by her hair. He viciously threw a pool ball at one female fan, hitting her in the chest and injuring her severely. One of his sleep-over girlfriends almost died of a drug overdose he had given her and she remained in intensive care for several days near death. He never once went to see her or call and had no further contact with her. According to his cousin Earl, he never apologized for anything. He drew and fired his guns many times when he could not get his way, firing into ceilings, shooting out television sets. When his last girlfriend, Ginger Alden, attempted to leave Graceland against his wishes, he fired over her head to force her to stay. Elvis hit Priscilla, his wife, at least once, giving her a black eye. He also threw chairs and other things at her. Once he tore up her expensive cloths and threw them and her out into the driveway. He even mocked and flaunted her with his affairs. When his father remarried, Elvis treated him and his wife very badly. When he first learned of it, he “threw a tantrum of frightening proportions,” destroying furniture and punching holes in the walls with his fists. On one occasion he stormed around the dinner table and threw the plates full of food at the wall, cursing his father and stepmother and blaspheming God

Elvis was a fornicator and adulterer. He had “a roving eye.” “His list of one-night stands would fill volumes” (Jim Curtin, Elvis, p. 119). He began sleeping with multiple girls per week when he was only one year out of high school and discovered the power of his music to capture sensual girls. His cousin Earl notes that the sleazy music clubs Elvis was visiting “satisfied more than his thirst for music—they unleashed Elvis’s sexuality” (The Boy Who Would Be King, p. 122). He slept with many girls before his marriage to Priscilla Beaulieu, and had multiple affairs after his marriage. Priscilla was only a 14-year-old ninth grader when Elvis began dating her in 1959 during his army tour in Germany. At the time he met Priscilla, he had an even younger girl living in his house (Moore, That’s Alright, Elvis, p. 162). Elvis corrupted the shy, teenaged Priscilla. He gave her liquor and got her drunk. He got her hooked on pills. He taught her to dress in a licentious manner. He encouraged her to lie to her parents. He led her into immorality and pornography. He taught her to gamble. He used hallucinogenic drugs with her. (These are facts published in Priscilla’s autobiography.) In 1962, the 15-year-old Priscilla moved in with Elvis at his Graceland mansion in Memphis (after Elvis lied to her parents about the living arrangement) and they lived together for five years before they married in May 1967. (The marriage was probably due to pressure put on Elvis by his manager, who was worried about the star’s public image.) Elvis and Priscilla had constant problems in their marriage and were divorced in 1973. Elvis had many adulterous affairs during his marriage, and Priscilla admits two affairs of her own. Scotty Moore’s second wife, Emily, said she felt sorry for Priscilla because of all of the women Elvis was seeing. Elvis seduced his stepbrother Billy’s wife, Angie, and destroyed their marriage. He then banished Billy from Graceland. Elvis’s cousin, Earl, who was his best buddy in high school and during the early years of his music career and who worked for him for many years after his success, describes how Elvis became addicted to orgies involving many girls at one time. Elvis cursed and profaned the Lord’s name continually in his ordinary conversation. Even during his earliest concerts he “told some really dirty, crude jokes in between his songs” (RockABilly, p. 120).

Elvis never made a public profession of faith in Christ, was never baptized, and never joined a church. Pastor Hamill, former pastor of First Assembly of God in Memphis, says that Presley visited him in the late 1950s, when he was at the height of his rock & roll powers, and testified: "Pastor, I'm the most miserable young man you've ever seen. I've got all the money I'll ever need to spend. I've got millions of fans. I've got friends. But I'm doing what you taught me not to do, and I'm not doing the things you taught me to do" (Steve Turner, Hungry for Heaven, p. 20).

Elvis changed the world and kept his private life private.

Lady Gaga invites the press every time she changes her knickers, and will make no lasting contribution to society.

my point naming elvis was that in the 50s his dancing was thought to be outrageous and encouraging immoral behavior. Dont agree elvis that changed the world think maybe chuck berry and bill haley did. The point is none of us are entitled to criticise in an abusive way anyone who has managed to be successful with their own music , if we have not managed to equal it ourselves.

Why not?

We are all entitled to an opinion, and we are all free to express those opinions as long as they do not infringe on anyone else's freedom. There are many artistes (musical and otherwise) who have achieved commerical success with their own original material whose work I do not appreciate and have no regard for.

In the same way that I respect the rights of others to dislike my favourite performers, and voice that dislike as vocally as they wish if they so desire, so do I reserve the right to express my dislike for certain 'stars'.

LOL!

As this topic has progressed, and CS has pointed out that Lady GaGa does have talent and ability, I've come to the opinion that I actually dislike the way she is being marketed more than I dislike her as a person. For example, take KT Tunstall. Fabulous songwriter, musician and vocalist plus she is articulate and very funny. She may make a living in the industry but she'll never get the attention Lady GaGa does. I expect KT will be around for years whereas Lady will be 'a flash in the pan', but it still seems unfair that KT will always be in the shadows of a fellow 'star' who is prepared to wear next to nothing to do her thang.

Am I old fashioned? :D

as i have never had the fortune to meet lady gaga,

i am unable to say if i like or dislike her or not,

but as the people who pay me to play music for them to dance to seem to like her dance tracks,

i have to say thank you to her for helping me earn my keep,

and may she continue to provide more to help keep my wallet full of the folding stuff we just cant seem to do without.

our own personal preferences and cultural/moral choices are not what the customer pays for,

otherwise there will be chaos with dj's refusing to play michael jackson, lady gaga, elton john, garry glitter, and alike.

at civil partnerships, inter racial weddings,

barmitzfa's, islamic functions, armed forces entertainment, in church halls, in prisons, masonic functions, charity events that support things we dont like, and everywhere else we dont want to go.

we all have a choice and a right to choose.

but we dont have the right to impose our moral choices and preferences on another human being.
