Play Or Not?

If you don't like an artiste such as Lady Ga Ga, Black Lace or even Gary Glitter, and either refuse to buy their music or play for personal pleasure / use, when asked at a disco for the artiste, do you refuse to play on the grounds that you dislike / choose not to play, or do you play because you've been asked for it (keeping your mouth shut or do you feel compelled to say something!?)

i would usually refuse on the basis that i know what would go down well at a disco. surely its similar to the can we have some rap in the middle of a motown section? or is it only me with this problem?

I play what ever they ask if it fits in..slippery of me..but at certain venues they have "house rules" no swearing etc. so living next door to alice is a no no but gang bang by Black lace is ok

 

I would never off my own bat play a Gary glitter song ...but at one venue at a drunken lock in... one guy dressed up when a mannequin silver upper tosso was found in the beer garden he brought it inside and put the model upper torso to his upper body and sellotaped it secure he then sellotaped a triangle pointed ripped up beer mat to his chin he proceeded to ask for and then danced to leader of the gang..OK sounds like very bad taste but at the time it worked..in hind sight it was in bad taste but everyone there took it as a joke and enjoyed the guy making a fool of himself..thats the sort of landlord and manager we have in Denton!!

 

So yes i play what make people happy not what i think is good taste or if i like it or not.

 

I am paid to make them happy not to be the quality police.

 

if what they asked for does not fit in with whats playing i will fit it in later in a section with similar songs.

 

requests are often not played next but in a bit with me.

I take the view that if you refuse to play requests which are popular on the grounds that you don't like the track or artiste, then in my opinion you should not be a function DJ.

I'm purely a function DJ so will play anything that they want, they are paying me after all.

 

If I think something is tasteless such as GG for instance, I will talk it through with the client and express my concerns that it may offend, I would make sure that I announced it as a special request though.

 

I would always work the track into some sort of set, ie play some glam rock and play GG before a known floor filling classic. That way you get a quick recovery for the people who don't like it.

I absolutely 100% agree. I'm not a fan of Lady GaGa, and even less a fan of the likes of 50 Cent, but if it's requested and I think it will work well (given the crowd I'm playing to), then I will play it. AND sound like I like it as much the crowd do, no matter how much I actually hate it. My personal opinion of the music doesn't even enter the equation.

I dislike most of the stuff people ask me to play, so if I were to refuse them all I don't think I'd still be working.

 

At private functions I'm open to virtually all musical requests. If I don't think it fits in with what's playing at the time, I'll try and work it into the mix later. If I'm concerned about the propriety or think it may cause offence, I'll talk to the person who booked me first and explain my concerns. The decision, and responsibility, is theirs after that.

 

In residencies I am a bit more selective. For differing reasons I refuse to play Tiesto or Snow Patrol, unless there is an overwhelming demand, or a very good reason. Also, a lot of venues in my area don't allow certain songs to be played due to sectarian connotations attached to them, which is something I have to bear in mind.

I generally play whatever is requested, even though there are occasions hwre I don't personally like the group, artiste or genre of the track. I am being paid to entertain them with their requests.

 

Having siad that, I will say "No" if I don't think it is suitable. Had one last night.

No I have a duty of care to the whole audience from babies to OAP's if I think the track is indecent or won't fit it dont get played because 1 person wants it.

 

The only exception to this rule is if its been requested by the B&G!!! I then discuss my thoughts and feelings on the track requested and then take their direction, and direct any subsiquent complaint to them.

 

I generally wont play eminem, Gary Glitter & Johnathon King. I also try to only play radio versions of tracks with explicit lyrics....

 

Part of our job as DJs is to entertain the whole crowd and not just one individual that might want the lates track from some one who can only get there dross in the charts by swearing consistantly through the track.
