Last night at a 21st birthday jolly I was playing a lot of upbeat, high energy material and a chap comes up and asks for UB40 - Red Red Wine and The Supremes - Baby Love. Okay, two tracks I have no problem in playing and played at the right time are winners. However, there was no way I could fit them in within the next 10 to 20 minutes as I'm sure I would have lost the busy floor full of 20 year olds, Eric Prydz Call on me was on at the time of the requests! So, I had pulled them into the work area on Ots and were ready to go when I thought the time was right. About half an hour later he came up and came out with the old favourite "Are you going to play Red Red Wine or what!?" with a bit of a drunken glare on his face. I told him how I was waiting for a right time to play them. The night goes on and I did play UB40 but didn't get to play Baby Love, due to the night going more up tempo and Eileen, Cha Cha Slide, Madness, Grease, lady Gaga etc. came out. So will you play a request, straight away, within 10 minutes, 40 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours? You have to be careful as they are the clients and its your duty to give them what they want. you dont know who they are (could be the brides mother or something) We have all played a request at the wrong time and cleared a dance floor usually to find the requester is nowhere in sight. Obviously you want to slot it in with other simular tunes as a genre set but as you said you cant go from dance to motown without clearing the floor Diplomacy is the key, apologise in a big way and say you forgot what song it was. if they are adamant play it, announcing its a request and live with it. that way the crowd should forgive you. That is what happened, after about an hour I played UB40, he was dancing but about 50% of the floor left, I then did Bob Marley Is it love and that left 2 dancing! There's a lot of factors to consider (no of requests, type of song requested, type of crowd, time left, type of function etc). I endeavour to play as many as possible, but it isn't always possible. I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. I try to fit in requests to fit the mood and I will usually tell the person requesting that it will need to wait until later. That normally is enough to keep them away. I log it on my laptop so that I remember. If the floor is flagging a bit, for instance if I have played 4 or 5 in a paticular genre then I might play it straight away, which can bring a new wave of dancers whilst the other sit down and have a rest. ---------------------------- Thanks ... Most if nat all requests are made on a very selfish basis... They want that song for them... Most if not all people at an event dont sit there and hoestly think Hmmm this guy should play such a tune as it would fill their dancefloor.... Often when someone hears a track, it will trigger off a memory recall of another similar track that often follows it. If this is the case, then its not a problem and can be inserted next. If its something totally unsuitable then it is best to be played at a suitable time and the requester will be told that there are a lot of other requests and it will have to take its turn/be played at a more suitable time. If, for example, the bride asks for something, its her wedding, her day and will most probably get played with an announcement that the bride asked for it and make sure you dance so you don't upset her (or words to that effect smile icon ) Edited April 5, 2009 by TonyB Link to post Share on other sites
