Which Modern-day Tracks Will We Be Playing In 10 Years?

Simple really:

 

As function DJs, we regularly play songs from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s as well as today's music. BUT will we still be playing ANY of the songs that have charted in the last 12 months, 10 years from now? Will Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" be as popular in say, 2019 as Young Hearts Run Free or Dancing In The Street still are now? Will we be playing Kings Of Leon's Sex On Fire in the same set as Sweet Child Of Mine?

 

Or will the music of the 21st century just not stand the test of time? Is longevity dead?

 

If you think that some tracks WILL still be getting requested in 10 years time (or even more!), let's see some examples. I'd love to see your opinions on the music of today.

I expect that those of us who are still DJing in 2019 will have a couple of tracks that we will play.

Maybe R&B or D&B will have a loyal following just as all other genre from past decades have.

 

I'm sure in 1974 not many people would have guessed they would be playing Waterloo 35 years later.

I can't think that I get that many requests for records in the last 10 years. Once they have gone from the charts and off the radio, they seem to be forgotten.

 

I do keep a good selection of songs from the last 10 years to mix an RnB or Dance set but some of the 'pop' songs are here today, gone tomorrow.

I do a decades music quiz every Saturday so i play 2 from the 60's 2 from the 70's 2 from the 80's 2 from the 90's and 2 from the naughties so in ten years time i probably will drop the 60's decade and move up to 2010's so the answer is i will probably be playing many and all the number 1's from the current chart.

Anybody still playing these tracks day in - day out?

 

Personally I still think the level of music currently is on a serious decline and even worse than it was 10 years ago, but thats just my personal opinion, so i forsee being asked to play even fewer 2009 tracks in 2019, than I am asked for 1999 tracks currently

 

We all do different gigs and aim at different markets and of course the club scene attracts a different music requirement compared to those who specialise in Weddings. However for me, back in 1999 I was getting asked / requested mainly 60's / 70's and 80's tracks from my clients, and in 2009 I can report it also largely remains the same.

 

Of course I do get asked for the odd current chart track and post 1999 requests, but the empathsis is in the word 'odd' its not the majority.

 

I also think that the longevity (sp) of current music is far less than previously, and stuff rarely gets asked for (in my field) once its left the charts. Taking the Sam Sparro example used above, it got asked for at one or two gigs, now like Nik, it hasn't been requested for ages.

 

Trends may of course be different outside of the traditional family function market that I do, and kids parties, prom nights and pubs and clubs have their own requirements and trends as we aren't clones all working the same areas.

How often is Steps, Whitney Houston or Britney Spears asked for these days, never mind the modern day tracks! I believe that I've been asked for one Gnarles Barkley track this year and one Leona Lewis.

Mika still gets asked for, along with the Scissors, the Kaiser Chiefs and that Artic Monkeys track. smile icon

Will Basshunter be asked for in 10 years - I doubt it. I bet Faithless will still be asked for though.

I over heard someone talking one day saying "There is no music after the Human league". Made me laugh, but on reflection....

 

This surely depends on the type of functions you do. Pub work requires more current stuff generall, but as I am out of that market, my gigs predominatley are based around classics. I do play a few modern tracks when asked.

 

You have to look at the age groups.

 

One thing I am fed up with though is the ones who ask for stuff that we can't get yet but they have downloaded illegally. They look at you as if...

Absolutely. I was asked for K.I.G. Head Shoulders Knees & Toes about eight weeks ago, by some idiot kid who refused to accept that it hadn't been released yet and therefore unavailable, because SHE had got it on Limewire! One thing I flatly refuse to do is source music illegally, not ONLY because it's illegal, but because I don't want to risk infecting my computer with God knows what!

The other day I lost my link to this site.I RE searched it in Google and there are ooodddllless of other DJ Forums talking in variations of our language that I don't understand.

 

It is easy to think that our forum is the centre of the Universe. I think some people might look at this as the crotchety old DJ'S site.......don't attack me......I consider myself one too.

 

Yep 98% of modern music is not for my ears.....but the crotchety old DJ'S of the future are somehere out there playing,buying and talking about their kind of music.

 

Seem to remember the artists of the 60's moaning about what the heroes of the 70's were playing....and so on!!

I think playing the music which the client wants is head and shoulders above what music I may like or listen too personally. Problems do occur however when teenage DJ's with no experience go to weddings with only the music they played at their m8's 16th birthday and with the expectations that everybody in that audience likes the same music as the average teenager and then wonder why they don't recognise the majority of what the guests are asking for.

 

If I was getting asked for tons of new music then i would be buying it, and subscribing to the DJ Only pre release sites. The simple fact is that i'm not getting asked for it, they are not appearing on guest request forms and pretty much the bulk of music in the chart at any one time is getting overlooked, I don't think that i'm missing out on anything or just refusing to buy something on personal principle. As far as new music is concerned in my chosen marketplace there is simply no gap to be filled and nothing to be missed smile icon . However if people DO start asking for it then i'll cheerfully change this accordingly as and when without needing to debate.

 

If playing what the client and their guests are actively requesting (in advance or on the night) means that i'm labeled as a 'crotchety old DJ' then so be it, i'll wear that badge of honour with pride as i've been called worse and survived, i'm more concerned about what the client thinks & wants because they book me and they pay the bills, not other deejays . In the words of Metallica 'Nothing else matters'

 

Also what is popular and what is deemed to be unique and a talking point may simply not be dancefloor material in any case. For example, Fleet Foxes - Winter Hymnal is currently getting peoples' attention and is also being played to death on BBC Radio 1 & 2 and local radio alike, but I don't see it being asked for at a gig anytime soon (although no doubt there will be a remix of it for club dj's).
