I have a family wedding that is proving a logistical nightmare due to also having to fit wife / dog / associated accessories into the car with the gear

Normally the car holds me, the gear and not alot else...... and this is a big venue (Down Hall, the jade establishment) so i wanna take alot.

I see two trips coming on..........

Nice venue have worked there many times. Make sure that you have got your PAT Test cert with you one of the DM's is very picky.

Access is great large doors to go through but you may have to wait until the wedding breakfast ends to rig

Its been a funny week chalk and cheese is an understatement

On wednesday i had the gig of my life - Local school prom - 250 16yr olds and it was thumping. We couldnt play a bad song and everybody did the cha cha slide in perfect unison last thing.

What a night what a buzz

Friday was a 12yr olds birthday with 5 kids. He forgot to invite a few, a few pulled out and the fair was in town. The lad wasnt bothered as he and his mates played pool footy and space invader. I donned my youth worker head and gave them all a dj workshop which they loved

Sat - nothing

Monday - a mates wedding - doing it for free and will be playing a lot of indie alternative and metal

Last night i did a 21st at Edgley and shaws Labour club next to stockport county's football club.

played the arriving music

played a few good early tunes

then the buffet

right lets get the party started ...was going well

went to party cheese dance mode ..floor filled as cha cha slide came on...

The Grand dad of the girls 21st wanted to go home early (it was about 9:45 at this point (not due to the music but because he likes an early night)

on his way getting up walking to the door he has an heart attack. and falls to the floor

some drunk relative who didnt see this, thought the bloke trying to help the grand dad must have pushed him over and punches the guy who is helping him!! ..bit of handbags ensues , i sort that out ..music off and ambulance called ..

luckily the hospital is not far they were there for 10:00 and got grand dad on a stretcher and out by 10:30

i had a play list running and just turned up the music NO one noticed but it was young hearts run free..whoops ... was hard to get the mood back but a few modern chart songs then back to classics filled the floor again

final song was never forget and this is one i wont forget or the rest of the guests

i was thanked by everyone for the way i handled everything and the venue staff wanted my card ..so a weird and wonderful night for me... tonight a wedding in Disley

Thursday was very busy for me at the village in Hyde ..friday in the local pub venue was busy early on then went really quiet but that's the nature of some pub gigs.

Did a school prom night on FRIDAY very good tbh, they were all up for it. For a change there was not much alcohol involved - which made dealing with the guests a whole lot easier !!!!!!! :joe:

Was booked for a wedding on Saturday but it was canc last minute, I WAS NOT HAPPY since they had put it off ages ago but didnt let me know  :protest:

Found out that they had canc it quite a few mths ago - before I had turned down another wedding booking down which would actually been a better pay day aswell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :damn: :(

Well I guess u have to learn from these things and maybe I shoud have phoned the venue to check with them that things were still going ok ??????????????? seems like the dj all ways seems to be the last to be booked and the last to let know of any problems ???

Yes, you are right when you say you have to learn from these things - things which generally apply under the scope of PROVIDING A BUSINESS SERVICE!

The general perception of 'mobile DJs' is that anyone can do this type of work because it is not a 'proper job' and a no brainer to be a DJ. DJs just stand there and play music. They act and say stupid things with a silly voice. Any donut can be a DJ. All DJs are big-heads, all play Abba, are scruffy and sweat a lot, etc, etc, etc.

If you are far removed from that 'perception', demonstration of good business practice, no matter how dull or tedious it may seem, will undoubtedly reward.

I'm sure as business operators, many of us provide a client service contract as well as accept a holding fee to secure our entertainment service. I'm sure many follow accepted practice and contact the client at least a week before their event date is due.

It undoubtedly saves 'us' a lot of potential grief, as well as reassure our clients that 'we' are not the perceived DJ stereotypes mentioned above.

Unlike years ago when there was only the landline, fax or letter, or a face-to-face meeting to contact a client, today, we have in addition mobile phones and email, thus methods of contact between the service and the client is not only a lot easier, but inexcusable to avoid !

If anyone needs guidance or business advice in confidence, please do not hesitate to PM me or a member of the moderator team who are not just volunteers on the forum - we try to help and assist.

well - Down Hall was a blast.

Comment on the place - since i was playing and a guest - possibly one of the best venues I have attended in both capacities.

Had to drop the gear off early - and was provided some space in their table store to leave the gear locked up - back to london - pick up wife dog - back to hertfordshire.

Wedding - back to venue - set up speaker for speeches - eat!

Managed to get the gear set up in about the same time as the room was changed round......and then started party. The bride never left the floor (that always helps) and i just kept going.

At midnight I was meant to stop - but kept going - the venue asked to stop at half past - but after some negotiation (not mine) said allowed to continue - packed it in at 1:30 - a little the worse for wear. I dont normally drink when i DJ - but was never left dry that night........

Stacked the gear in a corner ( i wasn't gonna move the car anywhere) and went outside to join the last few people / bottles of wine. Did i never want to get up the next morning.

Must make a trip to storage before my next gig - i know from past experience if I pack up when "merry" my cabling skills to me appear divine at the time - but will take 30 mins to untangle next time.

I am a bit gutted at this weekend event(or should i say none event!!)

I turned up at the pub where I was all set to impress as another dj I knew did a gig there the week before but passed it on to me because they wanted more karaoke,

I introduced myself to the landlady and she looked a bit miffed because she didnt want the other guy back apparently because he didnt do karaoke.

I explained that I was here to cover him due to the karaoke thing and she said fine can you do 5-9,obviously I jumped at the chance, gave her my card and told her I will be back at 4.15.

45 mins later I receive a text message saying due to lack of advertising she wont be needing me today but she will call me in the week to arrange something!!.

Now im normally the trusting type but do you think something dodgy is going on or is she being genuine in that text?

Im worried that she thinks its dodgy but I do know that they are looking for a dj on a regular basis and this would really suit me!!

What would the rest of you pro's do?I want to look professional and not to pushy but not sure where to go from here..help!!

OK so, to recap, I got sacked unjustly from a residency last year, they've struggled ever since and they asked me to come back so I started a few weeks ago and it's been pretty poor so far due to low numbers.

Well, on Saturday night we were packed out all night. And it was terrible. The crowd was about 90% male (2 stag parties and 2 supporters clubs celebrating their team winning the league). So any girls that did come in were immediately put off by all the loud, leery guys, and left almost immediately.

Rowdy, drunken, thuggish behaviour all night saw people being escorted out regularly and then, towards the end of the night, a riot broke out when 30-40 guys started fighting, bottles and glasses were smashed with glass flying everywhere, a pregnant girl was punched to the ground by a guy and the police had to be brought in.

I am seriously reconsidering my position there.

I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. Including club residencies, karaoke, pub quizzes, specialised wedding service, Master of Ceremonies, Compere, Night at the Races and much more.
