hiya everyone,

firstly thanks for your replys, socond im just interested in what people use. this has nothing to do with iv got more than you cause im sure that there are a hell of alot of people with a hell of alot more than me.

im not trying to put anyone down if there setup is smaller and comments like i dont hide behind fancy lights isnt constructive at all. in my life i actually want to be a full scale lighting engineer and im working my way up to that. i love hearing what other people use as i always find people with lighting advice for me and much better lighting than me.

im not being funny but i posted this on another forum and every post back was constuctive, helpful and complementary. all i feel im getting from here is that people think im trying to show off and that is not the case at all.

anyway sorry for having to say that but sometimes forums are full of very bitter people that think everyone is trying to be an idiot and thats not what im trying to be.

cheers ollie

Great. smile icon

Just remember that content contributed on a community can be interpreted all sorts of ways. I do not believe that the comment was aimed at you.

Just a note in case you, or any other member chooses to put a member down, please consider the following.

Think of this community as your local pub. You may sit and discuss your own thoughts amongst your friends, or if you choose, you can freely engage in conversation and debate with any of the other regulars. However if you choose to insult the other patrons, or stand up and shoot your mouth off to the point where it is encroaching on the enjoyment of others, then you will be asked to moderate your behaviour. If you continue to act in the same manner, then you will be asked to leave the premises, or risk being ejected.

Like a pub, the management and staff of this 'venue' reserve the right to cease 'serving' you, where breaches of the house rules (Code of Conduct) have been made. The decisions of the management are final and no correspondence will be entered into.

im not being funny but i posted this on another forum and every post back was constuctive, helpful and complementary. all i feel im getting from here is that people think im trying to show off and that is not the case at all.

One of the greatest motivations to personal success is competition. However, when a content peer occupies the same niche as you, then you don't ignore them, but you do not indulge, or directly assist them, either. It depends on how each of you present a theme that serves your niche; how effective your "site identity" and branding are, its a big world and everybody has different tastes and a different modus operandi in relation to how their particular community is run and there is room out there for everybody to co-exist.

There are probably hundreds of sites like each of our own, out there, being created every week, and whilst we don't overtly promote or refer to them, we don't allow negative discussion on them either.

Although forum communities can be likened to a Restaurant, this is not an "all you can eat" Restaurant - the menu changes by day.

Sure, there will be something on the menu that is agreeable and other items on the menu that will not - but ultimately, if you don't like today's' 'menu' or you see something which if ingested may disagree with you, then you have the choice to find another Restaurant for today's meal which may have servings more to your liking. However, you are invited to return here everyday to check to see if there is something on the menu which you may like, then please pull up a chair, reserve a table and partake in it.

ok enough with the analogies Dukesy lol

Personally, if i was THAT serious about my lighting, id buy some decent reliable brands. When you get to the level of 8 Moving heads and giant lasers, the people hiring you recognise Brandnames like Martin, Robe and Varilite, not honson or Chauvet. Not a dig, but although thats an impressive list of lighting, alot of it is just "Basic Disco" lighting and the rest is cheap chinese copies. It gets to a point when you dont buy MORE lights, you buy BETTER lights

also "coef performance show 200s" doesnt appear on any search i can find, whilst it reads impressive, i doubt anyone knows what on earth they are. Have you considered some Martin Mac250's? Industry standard moving heads, parts readily available and you have cross hire purposes. Get 4 of those and add to it

Im also curious to know the legal side of your home made lasers, are they legal to use in this country?

I know that MOST people who go down the route of building their own projectors (lasers) tend to gain the knowledge from specialist laser forums, the biggest being Photonlexicon.

To be able to do it, especially when you get into RGB (red green and blue {full colour}) you need to know what dichros to buy (they act as a mirror to certain bandwidth of colours, but mirrors to others) in order to build beam tables. They also start spending serious money on software and DACs to control them.

During the process of gaining all of this info you also gain quite a lot of knowledge in the safety and safety standards of lasers, thus normally ending up producing safe laser shows.

People who buy the £300 Chinese lasers from ebay on the other hand tend to get them out of the box and point them into the face of the audience 10 foot away. (I must admit that was what I did with my first laser) :( .

On the whole most of the Chinese imports do not meet even the basic standards that are required by our regulations, yet so many UK suppliers sell them believing that they do.

We have enough lighting to accomodate our needs... i haven't got the patience to sit and write/remember every unit we have. We buy equipment and use until it dies beyond repair. We upgrade systems every so often.

Calm Down! Calm Down! :chad: (is it safe to come out!! Lol)

As has already been said, its horses for courses.

If a set of 4 par 56s does the job for you, that's fine.

(which is exactly what I started with plus a Soundlab 'Darby')

Big lighting shows are very impressive but not very practical for your average

100 seater social club!!

And IMO no lighting set up will compensate for poor sound quality. Get this right,

playing the right music for your audience and you'll get away with some flashing torches!!

(Well, maybe not quite!!) tongue out icon

Having said that, lighting can really enhance the presentation of a disco.

Just for info, my modest light set up is:

1 x ADJ Revo III

2 X ADJ Revo sweep

2 x i colour 4 (500w) for colour wash

and my trusty Soundlab - uninspiring but great coverage for ceiling/back wall

While I'm on the subject of lighting, i'm looking at getting a pair of ADJ Green Phantom lasers

to add a new dimension to my lighting. Any thoughts positive/negative?

Regards

Kev

PS: Just in case the first line above didn't give it away. although based in North Wales I am a Scouser :dukesy:

My lighting setup is made up of quite a bit of second hand stuff those with a * were bought new.

4 x PAR 56 300w (on own ancient t-bar)

1 x Showtec Rackmount DMX Dimmer (*)

8 x KAM Par 56 LED

2 x KAM Mandarin Dragon 250w (Rarely used - 10kg+ each!)

2 x Geni Mojo Spinmaster 1's

2 x Geni Mojo Spinmaster 3's

2 x Soundlab vasto 50w (*)

1 x Double Derby 2 x 100w (*)

1 x Velleman USB DMX controller (*)

1 x fog machine

Tend to use all the spinmasters, one of each type on each t-bar. The other t-bar has two vastos as well. The LED par cans dont get used much (never enough time to stick them on the floor and aim upwards at the wall(s)).

Wanting to update some of it and flog of the s/h stuff back to ebay where it came and get some DMX scanners or LED. Not sure yet though!

Cheers,
