Weekend 12th - 14th June

Recommended Posts

Pub gig for me this Friday, a 50th in Stevenage. Late booking (last Friday), but regular contact with landlord who has supplied a photo of the birthday boy.

I was starting to break out some 70's/80's playlists, but then received this;

it will be a young crowd so a lot of the latest hits and some R&B

Oh well. Ne-yo, Akon and P!nk is it... :joe:

Not sure how well this will go down with a 50yr old - but I'll try to have a chat with him when I arrive.

The pub has live music most Saturdays, so I think some older stuff will go down just fine later in the night...

Nothing on Saturday/Sunday.

Song to play....

Meat Loaf - Real dead ringer for love

I will pop in for a chat and hopefully you can buy me a Beer!!!

I'm doing a Disco for a 13yr old special needs child.

We have done a few for the family over the last two years - The majority of the guests are special need, they are a great crowd as they just appreciate everything! They love the music, lights, bubbles and the games - It makes us feel rewarded as these guys don't get to experience a lot of stuff that other teens do.

Should be easy enough to fit in on Friday, it's a wedding that has come from a group of 40 year olds that I have done quite a few gigs for now.

Plenty of rock chick there LOL

Friday night - wedding. About a dozen tracks chosen, rest is up to me

Saturday - Wedding. First marquee gig of the year at a family private home. Been given a list of over 200 tracks that lasts over 13 hours, most of which is pretty obscure stuff (Grrrrrrr). Bride is French so can forgive her input of French artists.

Wedding for me his weekend again and they want I Will Survive as the second song!!!????

Reminds me of a wedding I did where the bride and groom had Good Riddance by Green Day for their first dance. Each to their own I suppose.

As for me. I'm not working tonight obviously, or is that obvious? Has anyone ever logged on to DJU whilst actually at a gig? Will anyone own up?

So that means I just have my residency tomorrow night. For anyone following the soap opera that is my Saturday night, last week was an unmitigated disaster. So I'm going to give it one last throw of the dice and I'm going to make it a karaoke/disco every Saturday (based on some feedback and small scale market research). I don't expect immediate success, but it's something I know I can get my teeth into and build up into something good. If I'm brutally honest, I have to thank Robster for this. Seeing the passion he has for karaoke reminds me of how I used to feel about it. I don't know exactly how or why I fell out of love with it, but it's time to go back to my first love.

And playing Meatloaf will be now problem, his vast array of long songs are a gift to all DJs when they need a 'comfort break',

Just got back from the 50th...

Steve (stardustsa) popped in to say "hi" - he's the one sitting down all relaxed. I'm the one with thinning hair trying to mix the next song in...

post-7207-1244855628_thumb.jpg

The gig was in a Pub on a housing estate. Dispite my concerns, the landlord was great and no problems.

The main problem was the music requested. The Landlord booked me on behalf of one of his regulars. The guy wanted "RnB, House, Modern Music and Reggae". I'm ok with this, but the rest of the pub (baring his wife) wasn't!!

I played a few extended sets of Reggae, and soon found that they really wanted UB40+Bob Marley. I was asked a few times for some oldies, but explained the music choice of my client.

Ended on Prodigy "Omen", which the birthday boy went mad to..

Someone took a card, asking if I would do her sons 21st, and a I got a big thank-you from the birthday boy+wife.

Landlord was happy, and a few other "nice one mate"'s whilst packing up.

So, others enjoyed it- but it was frustrating knowing that I could have played some oldies and had many more people up. However, the instructions were very clear - no old stuff!

Thanks for coming along Steve - nice to meet up again.

18/25 year olds think its growed up to say R'n'B....like thats what their Mate said at an earlier function. Most haven't a clue what it is.

I drag them over to my P.C and tell them I have 40,000 tracks on here.38,000 of which I have never played nor are likely too!!!Give me the name of some R'n'B artists("Ummm...you know Thingmybob")..we'll choose them....and watch my lights zig zagging across the dance floor....goes nobody will be dancing.

Then I go back to the Cha Cha Slide....Whigfield etc

Nik did it once, there's a pic of him with DJU open on his laptop, whilst in a village hall. The wifi was open to all !

I hear ya! :D

In this case, the end client was very very specific about music. Looking at the age groups in the pub and the song that did fill the floor, some more traditional stuff would have gone down very well.

However, I was hired to provide a specific style of music, this was made very clear when I arrived, if I had access to the end client before the date I would have asked if I were able to use my discretion if the crowd didn't like the music.

In this case, the guy and his wife said "bang up to date stuff, no old rubbish, here are some CD's" (handing me a few Ministy of Sound CD's & Similar - I had them anyway)

We had a bit of a chat with the landlord at the end, and he was happy. If I'm back there again with a free reign on music, it should be a good night.

ps. They *did* ask for Cha Cha (and got up and danced with the guys elderly Aunt), Wigfield, and I even dropped in TimeWarp (I wanted to extend this set as long as possible, and its a nice change from YMCA).. This set filled the floor, but he wanted to end on some Ministry of Sound stuff then Prodigy..

Carmen has lots of photos of him smiling, dancing n happy - so we played to one of two people in a public bar!

It would be good to go back, and I've emailed the landlord to see if he would consider a "normal" night.

Sorry to hear this Mitch. It sounds like you're working hard to make it a success. These things do take time, and often a bit of promotion from the Venue. It sounds like a chat with the management may help (either way!). If they are backing what you are trying to do, then try to stick with it if you can.

For what its worth, the type of night you're trying to do would be my kind of night out :-)

I'm lucky enough to have Carmen, I can do the comfort break & get a drink at the bar.

I was hoping to slip that song in last night, but no chance... My currently next gig is 6hrs, so I'll play anything! (apart from Soulja Boy)

Good to see you guys and glad it went well - Quite a tough "In ya face" crowd with youngsters, Nans, Builders who had just finished work and come in for a pint and every other tom, dick and harry to deal with!

It was nice to relax with a pint and watch!!

Two weddings this weekend that were like chalk and cheese. Friday night was a right chavvy do in the function room at the back of a pub. Most of the men went to the public part where they could play pool so I was left with a room full of young ladies. They bought me drinks. Offered me food which I politely said no thanks to but they brought me over a plate full anyway. Bride was over the moon and said I was the best DJ ever and she wants me to do all her parties in the future - wonder if she will think the same when she sobers up :). There were certainly some lovely young ladies in attendance.

Saturday, a more up market wedding. Marquee in the grounds of parents house. 10am set up then popped home to get changed and was back by 1pm. They hired two security persons for some reason who I got on well with. Neither myself or the security guards were offered any food or drinks during the day. I left background music on during the main course and popped out to a shop to get some food! The security persons gave me some money to get them some too.

The playlist was pretty horrendous - all 13 hours worth. I split the tracks between background and evening. Was plodding through the tracks in the evening to an empty dance floor when a young lady came up to me and said for goodness sake, can't you play anything descent otherwise this will go down as the most boring wedding ever. So I slipped in a few floor fillers, quite a bit of cheese and a few club tracks. Floor filled up and pretty well stayed that way until the end. Groom came up to me before he left and said he was well pleased with the way the evening went. Was getting on really well with the guests until the end. I finished at 12.30am and they wanted just one more. I was pretty tired and just wanted to pack away and go so said No. They were insistent and a young lady pinched a mic and started to sing. I switched it off at the mixer and she had a bit of a go at me. I really didn't care (she was French anyway), long day, was tired, hungry and just wanted to get home!

Well just got in and to be honest it was a hard night. :hurt:

I knew the deceision to have I will survive as the 2nd song was baaad one. I like to get the crowd up - BANG - straight after the first dance with something like - Crazy little thing called love or similar, but it didnt happen. Maybe cause it had been a loooong hot day in the sun and toooo many beers had got them all too Pi%$3d, dammm light summer evenings.

Anyway it was one of those nights when things never really took off, people danced / people didnt maybe it was a case of trying too hard on my part by changing the genres too soon and not letting them get into each type of songs, but normally after about 2 or 3 songs u get to fell if its gonna work or not. The younger crowd wanted new stuff which I played then the older crowd seeing them dance wanted older stuff which clear the floor to which they also left felling a little to exposed I suppose dancing in a sml group. One of the guests fell over backwards outside and smaked her head on the slate floor which then meant an ambulance was called and the night end rather quickly aswell!!!!!! :crap:

Oh well gotta try and learn something each time u do a gig and this week what I think I learnt was maybe not to do a function esp. a wedding for somebody u work with cause I think that client/dj bond or barrier is a bit lower than usual but not as close as if u really new them properly. I hope u understand wot Im trying to say.

Try again next week yeah bring it on :funjokeandlaugh:

I think people forget we're trying to provide a professional service..

I doubt they would have nipped behind the bar and served themselves!

Groom came up to me before he left and said he was well pleased

"result"

Glad you were able to leave off, at a decent time.

From a personal perspective, I don't have a problem playing 1 or 2 extras IF its been a good night.

For the dull nignts, I'm glad to leave off on-time..

I've been in a difficult situation before, and know its hard - so glad you got out ok!

Anyway, glad to hear you had a busy weekend!
