Dream Catchers 0
I have only had one occasion where I have had to send a laptop in for repair, this was because it was still under warranty. I removed my hard drive before sending it, I am paranoid about personal data being looked at. I can understand some of these companies charging £100+ for plugging the SIMM back in as you do have to pay for the engineers knowledge, after all if you send it in for repair it means he must have more knowledge than you and somebody has to pay for that. However they should be clear about what they are charging and not just say they are replacing something to warrant their charges. When I do repairs I make it quite clear that I will be charging (hypothetical figures) £50 for the first hour plus parts, if the parts are fuses or something cheap I don't charge for them. gadget 0
Worth a read I wonder if I should go back to doing PC/server repairs for a living in the daytime?! If it was me I'd also not send the HDD in either or if I really had to, I'd blank it first. However most people wouldn't know how to this in the first place... I wouldn't charge for simplly looking at something first - unless work was physically requried on it... David I hear he does electrics too! :funjokeandlaugh: Heh fancy teaming up to do electrics and PC repair? stardust 0
I had an annoying scenario today I visited a customer who contacted me with a computer problem - His Laptop was a complete mess - Severe Virus and Spyware infections, missing dll's, corruption etc My policy with these types of problems is take the machine back to my workshop as they can take a very long time to completely repair - this also saves the customer money as he pays a set repair fee as opposed to an hourly on-site visit. He was arrogant and mentioned the press reports about engineers looking at private data and basically did not trust me! He wanted me to repair the problem in front of him but refused to pay the hourly rate (which is still cheaper than all of my competitors) Of course he has a right to be concerned about his private data! And of course he doesn’t know me and and he me may not have heard of my company before, so how do I get his business? Stay on site for hours on end for £35? Times are tight but there is no way I can loose half a day for that amount. I am speaking to various people at the moment with the idea of drawing up some documentation with legal / Data protection information which I can sign in front of the customer, at least it will give the customer some peace of mind. He told me that he will take it to “The world of PC’s” (you know who I mean?).. Who will charge him more for the repair, but will give him the piece of mind he was looking for, by being a large UK wide company I presume… :hide: oohh

stardust 0
Wasn't it PCWorld that rooted through GGs computer that lead to his conviction? Jim Yes it was PCWorld in Bristol.. I was involved in a case in the a few years backs where an employee was sacked due to another member of staff snooping in his e-mails and finding severe porn images (not illegal but very HC). I am no legal expert (i was there as an IT representative) but the sacked member of staff then (or attempted to ) take legal action on the snooper for looking at his e-mails.. i don't know what the outcome was as things were hushed up, The other guy kept his job thou.
