On average, how much do you spend on music every month?

I am including my karaoke collection ..which i buy the sunfly hits and most wanted each month and the odd other Karaoke CDG plus music i spend upto £50 a month

 

obviously when i first started i spent a fortune ,now this is just top up material new chart stuff

It varies by how busy I am, and the types of gigs - older parties (and my local) won't want bang up to date stuff, a kids 13th will.

 

I have a ProDisc subscription @ £15/month, and then fill in any gaps with CD purchases as required.

This month has been about £50, last month was £15 (just ProDisc)

Pro Disc monthly for me plus the Now CDs whent they come out and then any other random Cds i tend to find. Average out at about 25 quid maybe a bit more a month...

It depends on what gigs I have in the month.

The majority of the time it is just the Nows and the odd "best of.." which keeps me pretty up to date for weddings.

If I get roped in to do a younger gig ie 18th or 21st I end up having to buy the odd download or a Clubland CD.

That said, I buy all variety of music for own listening pleasure.

Fortunately I don't tend to need much new music as I now only really serve the Wedding market. Of course I get asked for the odd track, usually top 10 but i've found that I can get away with just buying the occasional 'NOW' cd when it is released and still not disappoint.

 

In all honesty, I have found that demand at actual weddings has dropped for new music in any case. By demand, I don't mean one individual asking for some obscure greenday album track, I refer to demand as being likely to be asked at 7/10+ gigs for one particular track. Lets face it, we have throw-a-way music for a throw-away society and most music today is just rehashed and based on somebody elses track or even the same track in drag. Often these tracks will disappear between gigs and what may be in vogue this saturday is old news by the following Friday, only the decent modern day anthems tend to hang around.

 

On some occasions, i've also got away with waiting until a particular 'Now' title appears on Ebay some weeks after release. Usually at a huge percentage less than its original RRP. This gives me an added feeling of cheerfulness, as I have obtained a 100% legal CD at a knockdown price and since the original owner has been the one who paid the royalties / artist, I don't have to contribute a second payment .

 

Lets face it, just like me mate and hero DJ Trev stated on another thread, this is Rip Off Britain and there is nothing wrong with buying something on the cheap.

 

Some people may think me tight, perhaps down to my Highland roots, but I prefer to think of myself of being thrifty :pro: . Besides, as i've said before, whilst most artists are fine, upstanding pillers of society, I do not agree with financing, even indirectly, the much publicised habits of the minority who dabble with alcohol or are the trustees of modern chemistry (i was going to type test-ees of modern chemistry here but it sounded rude, but still accurate)

 

disclaimer:- I'm not reflecting on ALL areas of DJ'ing just my own personal experience and requirement. I know that plenty of DJ's NEED to spend a small fortune on music and that the market extends beyond that of those who do Weddings (been there and worked there). I don't have ACDC (but will get it in) and "that bhangra track" has been found ("Bhangra Nights vs Husan" by Husan), other than that, the rest are covered.

She's sending enough music to last the 3hr party- fine with me, the above list is pretty wedding DJ friendly :-)

 

I played my local pub this weekend and the only really modern track I played was by Black Eyed Peas - the rest was a big mix of mainly older stuff. - just as well as I was broke and didn't want to buy anything!!!

If I get any kids parties, then I tend to get in more music (but charge less :wall: but do have a high referral booking rate)

I spend between £5 - £8 per month to ensure that i always have the Top 10 plus a few remixes.

Usually with 7 Digital.

I sometimes download a few tracks from Mastermix (mainly for my own pleasure and purposes)

and sometimes a few tracks from the DMC Download site (Again mainly for my own pleasure and purposes).

 

I used to visit HMV at least once a week and spend... for at least 15 years (usually on "New Release Monday").

I haven't been in a record shop for months now!

Re: thrifty. I usually get my Mastermix CDs off ebay a bit cheaper, using the good ole "Make an offer" button.

 

Mp3s I get from Amazon, because my wife gets gift certs for there for doing surveys and other stuff (I do a text based survey one which lands me 5 quid a week in amazon vouchers).

 

Oh and buying old Now Cds are good to catch up on the older tracks. Although I've just actually paid less for a Now CD than I did for one download the other day that's on it. :damn:

I haven't been in a record shop for months now!

 

We popped into Enfield HMV this Saturday.

Absolutely terrible for choice.

The store is divided into Music, DVD and Games, pretty much an even amount of space for each.

 

Record shops used to have loads of choice. I was hoping to get "Alexandra O Neal" and a few others on CD. Not a chance.

I guess this is part of the decline of the high street - most of my CD purchases have been Tescos or Ebay :-(

Downloads are nice and easy (and quick!), but its nice to get a physical CD, and not all artists/tracks are on download.

Have you seen the prices of some of the first CDs in the series? 30-40 odd quid for Now 8->19 (each volume!)

 

can see it getting expensive. Probably cheaper for me to get a USB turntable and take it off the original vinyl (but won't sound anywhere near as good, especially if its warped over the years!)

I voted up to £25, but on reflection its prob more. As a WDJA member I have a discounted subscription to CD Pool of £22.50 each month for Hits and Radio and I still buy the Nows just so as not to spoil the collection, this month I also bought the new MoS mash up 09 mix and then there is the odd 27p download.

 

I do specialise mostly in Weddings and Corp that truely aren't usually as up front as some jobs, but I also do a regular pub and some student work which does demand that I am bang up to date...although the CD Pool discs do have it pretty well covered I do need to top up sometimes from the downloads. I guess as the Pro Dub is directly relevant that should be also factored in the cost of music.

Pretty much like all the other responses I'm in the up £25 bracket.

The ubiquitous 'Now' CDs and top 10 downloads.

 

And always keeping an eye to the 'bargain' compilations at Tesco.

 

But having said that my recent venture into Karaoke (kicking and screaming) :yuck:

has sent my spend rocketing in the last two months. Having to start from scratch

compiling a decent range of discs. Ebay has been a great help here.

 

I have steadfastly avoided karaoke - each to their own but I just don't really

like them. All though running one is less painful than attending one. :amen:

Mixmash offer bundle purchase discounts as well as a lifetime discount to registered DJ Associates members.

Over 100 members each received a DVD volume from Mixmash last year worth £40 - for free, and possibly more this year too! smile icon

Those who hunt around for 50 tracks first, then sign-up and download them can't be on to a bad thing when they then choose to leave, with 50 free music tracks in thier library, totally legit?!

 

Like I said, not everyone's cup of tea, but I believe for the newbie or established DJ, there's actually quite a lot of useful music. Hunt around...

 

Tracks from Louis Armstrong to Arman van Buuren, Rock n Roll music to the Invaders Must Die Prodigy album, Dean Martin to Madness, Dizzee Rascal' Bonkers to Roy Orbison, Frankie Goes to Hollywood 12" mix's to Felix and Old Skool classics, Remixes, etc - of course you have to hunt, and hunt, but the playback quality of the tracks are fine, along with the price. smile icon

As for WDJA supporting Pro Dub...Well it looks like Pro Dub is a fact of DJ life and here for now and as a responsable organisation with professional members we trust that our members are honest enough to ensure they are up to date with any licences/certificates that they should have. At the en of the day its up to the DJ and we would hope each DJ is acting responsably, however, it would be time consuming and a bit of an insult to check each DJ. I guess this is a whole different topic, but you did ask Personally I have mixed views and I don't actively support it although I do have a licence because it is in the best interest of my business.

 

I like CD Pool but in all fairness I can't compare them to others such as DMC and other pro discs, basically I am lazy and like to have discs delivered to my door and with Hits and Radio I don't appear to have many unusable tracks and when I am asked usually I have the track. I have a HD4500 but I really prefer using my Pioneer CD players so the HD4500 is normally only used when I am after a track in a hurry.
