Projector And Screen

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

After purchasing my system, lights, flames and stand as well as banner and business cards.

I am now after my finishing touch.... anything between a "50 to "120 screen and a good projector.

I am after 2... yes 2 of each. 1 screen with projector on left and 1 screen and projector on right of my setup.

Now i am new to this projection stuff. I have normal tvs in the house with normal dvd players and sky etc..

So any suggestions?

will be used at parties, gigs and weddings.

Must be good quality images... hopefully will be playing dvd player on it with videos playing etc as well ability to run a camcorder for live video feed.

I have looked on ebay but dont knw which projector i shud b looking for... and niether wat screen. All the Lumens stuff and resolution is not helping me... like i said for a "50 - "120 screens!

Thanks for any help.

Projector wise, have a look at the thread '14 Projectors Between £1,500 To £2,000' and '8 Projectors Under £300'

There are legal music video content providers such as Promo and Mixmash who have plenty of music volumes to choose from - Mixmash have several bundle deals worth looking at on their site. DJ@ have an exclusive bundle deal on the Mixmash Party Classics volumes 1 to 20 - (that's 600 tracks!) - give me a shout if interested. Contact details in my signature.

Just be aware when having projection screens, that if you have say a 8ft x 6ft screen you will need at least 20 feet of space behind to rear project on to & fill the screen. Iv been there and got the t shirt. :damn: hardly any venues have that sort of room available. i would look at the plasma route, see my youtube videos, my user name is

if you decide on the projector route you will need at least a 2000 lumen projector. If i was advising anyone on doing this i would advise against it and look at the flat panel tv route. you can use these at every venue you go to but projectors you simply cannot. Hope this helps. :dukesy:

This is actually incorrect, it all depends on the lens that is in the projector or alternatively the lens you purchase for the projector. With say a 0.8 lens you can project on an 8'x6' screen from 6.4' away and fill it. problem with a 0.8 lens is that its fixed. This means it has no zoom and lens shifting will cause the corners to cut in so you have to have the projector at the same level as the screen centre.

I would highly recomend Sanyo XP57 or XP100 projectors, i work regularly with these machines and they have never let me down.

i did actually forget to mention that if you have a short throw projector then dan is correct but i would assume but i may be wrong that these projectors are fairly expensive.

Don't forget that a projector screen will need room to set up - with low ceilings, waste of time IMO.

Of course, projector screens are lightweight compared to a plasma in a flight case, but with the right stand / brackets, a plasma can be placed in an area that takes slightly less room than a projector screen.

I found projectors gave a wow factor of between 5 and 6, Plasma's were between 8 and 10. Projector screens can make a Wedding look like a conference room. Not my comments either. Plasma's can make a wedding look like a bookies - horses for courses. If the Wedding venue hired is a top, swanky affair, I'd go for the Plasma's, and on one crucial point. Plasma's work in most lighting conditions, projectors, although they are getting sharper and more clear, become lost when the lights are on! Don't forget some venues have good surfaces to use as a display (walls, etc) so if you had little space, you can always project onto a wall!

Shop around and you'll find bargains galore for ye old plasma's! 50" plasma's are a lot cheaper now than a few years ago, with good spec too.

Hi guys,

Looks like a mixed response but a plasma might b better on the sounds of it. The only thing is... i have a budget of around £1000. Anyone know were i can get 2 plasmas for that much?

The projectors would have been £350ish each (as im after 2) that would be £700 in total with £300 left to play with screens.

any more recomendations either way? links or places to look? or specs etc?

thanks

You'll need to budget for a flight case whether you buy plasma's or projectors. They need to be looked after in transit. Also, you'll need to ensure that the cases/s fit in your vehicle before you buy!

There maybe flight cases which can be purchased already made - if you know the dimensions of what you want to protect, you could always speak to Savill Cases and see if they have any warehouse stock. Contact Clive on 01379 898898

I've not had experience with the plasma carry bags. To be fair, I've not seen a VJ service use one (flight-cases every time) but padded carry bags do exist, or can be custom-made to the spec of the screens, etc. Clive offers custom made bags too.

You'll have to hunt around and see what deals are around to be honest - There were two 42" plasma's on ebay (old spec) recently for £125.00 (collect only). I nearly went for them myself but I had to justify the storage space to the wife, and lost!

You can pick up a NEW 50" plasma for less than £600 - £700 these days off the high street. Could make it a central feature to your disco set-up, maybe invest in a projector for an over-head / back-up purposes as you're starting out.

Why not have smaller monitors which can be attached to stands / trussing, with a central screen - 2 x 1 x 2 set-up? I've not used monitors but others here have and can advise.

Not sure if you have a video mixer, if not, worth considering. Makes life easier for switching between video / camera sources / effects, etc. If possible, always try before you buy.

Legit music titles - you'll need to invest in these and / or visualisations which look professional for the displays. There is nothing worse than looking at naff copies of MTV music vids off Sky on either type of display IMO!

Just a thought, there are specialist AV forums you could keep an eye on for second hand sales of AV kit and supplier lists.

Others may be able to suggest suppliers who they have experience with.

Wow!!! how do you get them screens to come up and how much do they cost each?

Also how do you run them ie dvi to hdmi?

I am looking at doing some thing like this but with karaoke as well

I picked up a few Samsung 32" screens for £349 each the other day. A flight shouldn't cost you more than £200. If buying 2 cases, could probably get a deal with a flightcase manufacturer.

Hope that helps

You can get converters from DVI to HDMI and vise versa!

I will let you off lee. I think my recomendation has slightly blown the budget by £14000 before buying the screens!

If going for a plasma maybe look into getting a unicol parabella stand, much more attractive than the K stands. Also you will need to take into account, all the additional space required to transport the screens and stands. They are not the smallest items once properly cased.

I wouldnt even touch plasmas for mobile work, they are heavy and have to stay upright. Go for LCD they are much lighter and far more suited to mobile work.
