Dj's United

Weekend 4th - 6th September 2009

Recommended Posts

Friday, Pub gig. My local, and 100yds away. Its a bit changeable, but I try to play a good mix of styles and its well received by the regulars.

One guy always comes up for a chat, apparently used to DJ and still has all the gear, suggesting "fresher music" - but can''t recommend any tracks.. I'm normally "busy" when he comes up now....

Easy set-up, I can load up through a Side Window, and free drinks - we stick to Water/Lemonade, I don't fancy gettting pulled for drink-driving for 100yrds!

Will try to get a photo or two - but its a bit of an obscure set-up with beams in the way of my gear :damn:

I've posted a request for any Scottish music - its the landlords birthday, so I'll try to prepare a medley for him..

Nothing for me. I'll be having a minor op. And whilst some will be keeping their fingers crossed (grow up!) I'll be chillin, and thinking of all you peeps receiving stares, dirty looks and the occasional / token abuse from the other side of the decks (if the screaming kids haven't smashed them up!)

Have a great weekend! LOL!

Hi all

It's the Wife's birthday this weekend so I am out with herself this weekend.

Typically though, I have had to decline one gig and reccomend a DJ mate for the other.

I've not been well recently but have dragged my sorry behind to this weekends gigs (friday and Saturday).

well the recession apparently hit my home town on friday .....

I had a few people come in saying it was dead every where except my venue!

The big pub in the centre had ten people in it at 9:30 the pub across the road form it had 3 people in it at quarter to 10 the next along the road had 20 people in it our nearest pub had only 30 people in at 10:30 so a group said who were doing a pub crawl ..my venue was busy..not rammed but busy.

I started karaoke at 8:00 pm on friday didn't even get chance to play songs in between the karaoke singers ...solid karaoke till 11.15 ish then played music till 12:00 steady with dancers in the pub so turned out ok for me ..but i do feel bad for my mate at the the big pub at the centre of the town..its not him its the fact his old normal customers are not going out around our town any more due to a policy change i n the age allowed in that pub.

Saturday was busy threw in a music quiz at 9:00 to 9:30

This gig is near to my home i set up on a friday afternoon and then walk to the venue , i normally have a couple of pints while working then after i stay and have a few more ..i pack up on Sunday afternoons ..My doctor has said i cant drink AT ALL!! so this weekend has been quite different . this morning i feel better for it and so does my wallet lol

Ask for drinking water... Most pubs won't charge you for a pint with ice - esp if you're working.

I may take a few bottles of water and discretely drink them, I'd not want to tie up bar staff with zero profit orders, You could also change your contract to require refreshments (ie soft drinks), and possibly food if its a very long party.

Ask a pub landlord if you can bring you own Beer/Coke- I think you'll find the answer will be definite NO.

This was discussed a while back - I personally feel it's a tadd ignorant to take your own drink into a venue which sells drinks?! Venue management have the right to eject anyone from their premises - including DJs!

In fact some WMC's will happily eject the DJ for taking the :cense:

Totally appreciate that soft drinks shouldn't be £5.00 or £10.00+ a throw, but then again, some would say that it's daft to charge £120 for a disco held in a quality venue such as a 5 star hotel, and then whinge about the price of the drinks! LOL!

Pubs are businesses too and rely on income to survive. As businesses ourselves shouldn't we in turn be supporting them?

Its a bit like a client booking us and then cheekily bringing along their own Dj to do the work but expecting to use our gear.

i never take my own drinks in but there is a distinct difference in price from several pints to the odd glass of cola.

Im sure Robby R - DJ Felix was only joking about taking cans in

the doc says ZERO alcohol for me from now on so i will save money...

note i drank beer AFTER my gig and used to walk back

this is now way off original topic so i'll leave this avenue of the topic

Hope everyone else had a good weekend

Another quiet weekend, just had my Saturday night residency. As many of you know I really wasn't enjoying it in there and have been miserable for a well. Well, over the last few weeks it has started to get better, as has my performace. And last night was my best night in there since I came back in April. Nothing world-shattering, but a half-decent crowd who all enjoyed themselves and I was pretty happy with my performance. Hopefully things have bottomed out and it's getting better now.

I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. Including club residencies, karaoke, pub quizzes, specialised wedding service, Master of Ceremonies, Compere, Night at the Races and much more.

This is Great ..i know exactly what you mean residency work can be mentally tough , i only feel good when i feel i have done a good performance ..sometimes we set ourselves impossible targets , customers are happy enough but we want more , having a crowd that are "up for it" helps..functions tend to be easier as people are up for a one off party event but a local, with miserable locals can be a hard nut to crack ..its almost like you have to teach them to enjoy themselves lol.

I am genuinely chuffed for you matey

on wards and upwards!!!

Thanks Rob.

I know from some of your Facebook coments that you can be as self-critical as me. And, whilst I believe it's important to be our own harshest critics, it's equally important not to continually beat ourselves up.

Very true, beause just like regular bruises those types of bruises can also appear on the surface too.
