Hi Guys,

I have my first gay disco booking tomorrow, it is a small birthday party for about 40 people in a pub function room. The guy that booked me told me that he and all his friends attending are gay and that they will all be up for a good night.

I'm looking forward to it but when I asked about music preferences, he told me that he would leave it up to me.

In terms of gay anthems, I can think of obvious artists such as Kylie, Britney, Take That, Erasure etc. that might go down well. Can anybody suggest any other not so obvious artists / tunes that I could play?

Thanks

Jose

Once concern I have is that I play cliched gay tunes making them think I am taking the mick as you say...

I'm thinking of starting off with some chart tunes and then going with the flow but trying a few gay anthems to see the reaction I get.

I would treat as any other type of function just because they are gay it doesn't mean things have to be different.

The late 70's and early 80's did see a boom in Hi-engergy music as listed by bigMCben. You may get away with playing a couple of tunes from the list.

It all depends on the age but generally just keep it to mainstream dance and pop it will be no different to any other gig. There will be a wide age range there most probably. Dont go down the route of thinking you have to play all the classic Gay anthems of the past it just will not work especially with today's youth.

I played a gay bar in Dublin years ago and started with my usual set. After about an hour I

stuck on Kylie - can't get you out of my head and a guy comes over and in a very camp way

says "finally, you play one of our songs!" so after that I cheesed it up and the night went

very well.

Ive done four 21sts for gays three lesbians and one gay guy i was employed after doing the first one by the other three. I played what i always play , plus a few trendier chart dance tracks , plus the lesbians requested on there consultations a few P!nk songs but on the rest it was stuff i would have played anyway.

I know one guy told me at his civil partnership he thought the dj was extracting the urine when the DJ just played stereotype songs all night. That DJ didnt do a consultation.

Sorry i didnt get to this thread before ..Im dying to know how it went...

Hope it went well

Being a gay man... I hope I can shed some light and assist you with a playlist.

Generally, the cheese still goes down well.... But generally I find that 90's and 2000's stuff is great. (Kylie and Britney are ok.... but not the old old stuff!! TRUST ME! They will think ya taking the p....)

Gay guys "usually" are followers of the recent chart stuff.... so Now 73 and 74 will give you a good idea of stuff to play.

The other CD that I found a GOD SEND.... "100 Club Classics" which is currently £5 in ASDA...

ALSO.....If you can obtain then, I find MOTO BLANCO MIXES are excellent choices, they blend extremely well and are played quite often in the local gay bars and clubs... and can lead you into the 90's stuff .... BACK TO THE 90'S Compilation set is a good choice as well.

(Nothing beats PJ&Duncan, lets get ready to rumble... although I find str8 guys prefer that more! LOL)

I'll try and post a list of songs tonight when I get in ..... How long is the gig? And rough idea on location (county)...

Also if you want, you can always give me a call tomorrow daytime (Got a private gig tonight ) and I can give you an idea on what to play :)

Ahhhh :crap: .....

Just realised the date of the original post!

Sorry I didn't reply sooner! :(

Hope it goes well

Alex

Just got back from my first gay disco :-)

It was one of the best nights I've done for ages.

I started off playing mellow funky house as background music then most of the night I played dance tunes. Loads of chart tunes, loads of 90s club classics, some rnb but mainly top 40 type stuff.

I actually found that the 80s gay anthems didn't really work, the crowd was actually 20 to 30 years olds so this is prob why they preferred newer music.

I did get asked for Macarena so I also played Saturday night, Cotton Eye Joe & YMCA.

some tunes that smashed the place:

Cascada - Evacuate the dance floor

Kylie - can't get you out of my head

Lada Gaga - Just Dance / Poker Face

Kelly Rowland & David Guetta - When love takes over

Bucketheads - The Bomb

Outhere brothers - Boom Boom Boom

Take That - Relight my fire

Madonna - Celebration / Hung Up

Shakira - She Wolf (Moto Blanco remix)

Young Hearts (Almighty remix)

Cheryl Cole - Fight for your love

I played a few remixes that I downloaded from Almighty records which mixed in well.

There was a fantastic atmosphere and I jumped out from behind the decks and danced with the crowd for the last few songs.

The crowd enjoyed it and I had a great night, it didn't feel like work tonight which is always a sign of a good night for me!

Kelly Rowland & David Guetta - When love takes over --- Nice choice! :)

Bucketheads - The Bomb <--- wouldn't of been something I though of

and (Moto Blanco remixes) ALWAYS go down well :)

I've actually created a Moto Blanco mix of about 6 songs which gives me about 20-25 mins break LOL....

If only I was allowed to share it with you all... but I'm not allowed :(

I'm so glad it went down well for ya :) Congratz :) .... From your experiences tonight, fancy helping me write up my guide ( From a str8 point of view )???

There you go. Like somebody said earlier - they are just people - i play those songs on a regualr basis.

like the dancing bit btw - takes some nerve but really makes a night of it if you get the crowd responding like that

I did a civil partnership not long ago for lesbians..to be honest I just approached it like any other gig and played what the mood and the crowd dictated...simples!!

I have a residency at a pub run by a lesbian couple. Many of the guests on party nights are gay and my advice is that it has nothing to with what you play but everything to do with how the DJ interacts with the crowd.

If you just play tunes and say nothing you will come across as aloof and in danger of raising suspicions of discomfort. Before I took over, the previous guy would just play and stare at the crowd!!!

If you camp it up too much (and you're not gay yourself) you could be seen as taking the whatsit.

My advice is to get into the party spirit and have fun. It will rub off onto the crowd.

Gay anthems are a must. Kylie of course, my lot love some Annie Lennox and the crowd is very much into the current house tracks (so I avoid too much old music).

All good crowds want the DJ to succeed so you're off to a good start before you play your first track.

I have had more fun at these gigs than many 'straight' ones as the crowd is less inhibited, will not be afraid to have a good time and sing or dance at the drop of a hat.

Hope that helps.

Teez
