My Sparkly Microphones For Karaoke

I have recently "pimped "three microphones. after watching X factor and seeing girls aloud , mariah , stacey etc with glittery microphones , i set about pimping three old scratched behringer mics i had ..now these worked fine but looked tatty so i got some chrome paint some clear glue and 1000 hot pink acrylic rhinestones and 1000 silver acrylic rhinestones and some clear nail varnish and spent 4 hours on each microphone pimping them.

 

I usually use my radio mics but upon showing the girly girls who come to my show the sparkly hot pink mics they went mental for them , then the guys started asking for the sparkly silver one... leaving my wireless mics unused!

 

They have created quite a bit of attention and i had one local pub/mate DJ down the road rang me up and asked where i got the "diamond mics" from as the customers had said "haven't you got some?"

 

so if you too have too much spare time a lot of patience and like glue all over your kitchen table have a go with some old mics

 

 

I know Sennheiser do mic skins but they fit only certain mics

strangely enough the singers think they are better than my better sounding microphones ...people are convinced by the look of something and not just its actual performance.

its something cheap, different ,and gets a good customer reaction. Tacky ..maybe but if it gets me more customers at my residency its what's in the till that matters!

 

I have a chrome 50's mic too some singers love to sing on that and it sounds rubbish compared to the others , "The look" is very important to my customers..i have been taken aback how popular these pimped up mics are with my singers and what a talking point they are with them.

I think they look great Rob, and I am going to unashamedly steal this idea!!! I few a few old mics I rarely use for karaoke since I switched to radio mics as well. This is a fantastic idea.

I think I understand how you've done it but could you give us a wee 'Blue Peter' guide on how to do this, any tips or pitfalls, like stopping the sequins sticking to your fingers and not the microphone and also where you got the sequins from?

I got the acrylic rhinestones from a ebay seller who was top notch, inexpensive and fast delivery

I got the chrome paint in a spray can from B&Q

 

The Glue i used initially was superglue gel on the first one i did then i used a big tube of clear glue from a pound shop the stuff in metal squeezy tunes that gets sticky after a few minutes.

 

first i cleaned the mics

 

then i unscrewed the metal heads , took out the foam lining and then sprayed the wire mesh head i then sprayed the bodies of the mics .

 

left to dry then did a repeat coat.

 

Then when dry i just glued on each acrylic rhinestone , yes they do stick to your fingers but not using superglue helped that also using the glue that takes a few minutes to grab properly means you can do a row and then space them better , i applied glue to the mic body then used different things to spread the glue evenly ie matchsticks or bits of plastic , anything to spread the glue. I would do a couple of rows then wait fifteen minutes then go back and do some more, when all on and dry i coated them with clear nail varnish from boots each mic took about four hours to do , put the foam lining back in the head then screwed them back up.

 

if your not the patient type this will be a nightmare , some people like this sort of thing ..me ..i'm in the first camp lol my customers smiles etc make up for my frustration though.

 

I do think there is a market for these done professionally ..Chinese manufacturers must be able to knock these out .

I agree that it appears quite fiddily and would require a great deal of patience. For those of us who are more impatient, what do you think about coating the entire case with glue and then dipping it in sparkly glitter, letting it dry and then applying the clear nail varnish. You could also colour code them depending on the colour of glitter you choose.

if your owt like me you will have a few battered mics hanging around , so that sounds a great idea to test it out.

 

i was actually thinking of glitter, then the gems for the spaces in between the gems and doing one gold for the Gangster karaoke singers /rappers
