I have had 4 telephone enquires this morning (Sunday) for bookings this year.

But during December I have had 2 cancellations for Weddings in 2010, I have had deposits so some you win and some you loose.

I always issue a written contract together with my Terms and Conditions.

1 of the cancellations was due to redundancy but the other was due to another DJ under cutting me and covering the cost of my deposit.

With bookings remaining stable at the present I am receiving more price enquiries and date availability checking, most of these are for "Late bookings" within 6 - 8 weeks from the event.

Are our clients now leaving things later to try to get a better price or are the just leaving things later due to possible redundancies or job security issues?

in general my bookings are 6/8 weeks in advance with a few up to a year in advanced. i get a few last minute enquiries as either somebody forgot to book something, last minute party or the £60 Sid has had an offer of £70 and left them in the lurch.

This month is very quiet but to be honest i have not pushed for work as we are trying to get some work on the house done in addition to the extension going up.

postponements / last minute cancellations are a concern at the moment due to the weather. My van is well and truely stuck and if the forecast doesnt improve i will be sat at home next weekend.

It seems they are simply leaving things later.

In 2008 most of the prime dates were booked before the end of 2007.

In 2009 I ended up with around the same number of bookings as 2008 and for higher rates,

but it took longer for them to come in.

On current showing 2010 looks like it will take even longer to fill up.

Number of enquiries is much lower.

Conversion rate is 100%.

Fee is higher than the last 2 years.

Deposits paid and contracts issued for all.

I'm part-time now but running things much more professionally, resulting in much less work but not too big a dip in earnings. I'm glad I went part-time when I did. Although I might retract that statement when I do my tax return this week.

I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. Including club residencies, karaoke, pub quizzes, specialised wedding service, Master of Ceremonies, Compere, Night at the Races and much more.

Given 6 quotes out in 2 days, with 1 confirmed booking. Better fees than 2009, but an alround better personal presentation and offer of service, so hopefully, things will come good, and the future will look bright.

Cheers,

Wayne

  • 2 months later...

I just landed all the party events at my local sports social club this includes all engagement and birthday parties unless the client stipulates they want there own dj.

So looks like a busy year for me with events almost every weekend some daytime too which is a nice change.

Good music is in the ear of the beholder or so im told

The start of this year 2010 has been the worst of any year and to put the boot in even more most of the popular hotels in the area are using agencies for their dj requirements. Great for the agent who earns a tidy sum but not so good for the dj's who work for them on a pittance.

My wedding bookings are surprisingly slow this year, very little booked so far (less than 10) but i am hoping people are simply leaving it later to try to get a better price. 21st parties are slow too as I have noticed that youngsters are having joint parties now to split the cost, a few weeks back i did one for 3 girls who all had it together. Only for my residency I'd be in trouble tbh but will stay upbeat, long way to go yet this year

Foolowing a short stint of sending quotes out, I can't believe that things have slowed up ao much in the Notts area. I am seeing the same, a lot of hotels, and some bars, are now using agencies.

Also, it doesnt help when your prices are being undercut by other DJ's, who are quoting less than half the fee you have quoted. Even though, we all know that these DJ's, may not be doing business "By The Book", clients at the minute, seem to be looking for "The Cheapest Possible Quote".

:wall:

Sorry, rant over.

Hope things pick up fopr everyone in the same position.

Regards,

Wayne

This year is most definitely down on last year.

I was chatting to an agent yesterday who has contracts or arrangements with a number of hotels. He said he has never known things to be so quiet.

He also said that he has never had so many bands calling and emailing him looking for work.

I have guys over here who are killing me with lower quotes, they download everything fro Limewire and Utorrent and have a patched together system but tbh the client couldn't care less. Anybody can be a dj now, a dodgy setup can be got for a few hundred and all the music you like is available on file sharing sites. Fortunately this type of operator will have a tough time getting on the recommended supplier list in hotels for weddings, as most managers can spot a cowboy miles off. I'm really going after the wedding market in terms of advertising from now on because you simply can't compete with somebody whose costs are so low if you are looking to get pub gigs and parties.

There's obviously a lot of factors why this appears to be on the increase.

Clients probably never really stopped looking for the cheapest possible quote, but by one little example, if 'they' have the means available such as the 'Dutch auction' website, from their view, ends justify...
