Weekend 19th-21st February 2010

Recommended Posts

Friday night, I'm doing a freebie pub/quiz and disco for the NSPCC. It was initially meant to be in an awkward venue out of town, but thankfully it's been moved to a different venue which is a full 20 yards from my Saturday night residency which greatly reduces the hassle factor this weekend. Any suggestions for song to play?

I've a 40th this friday. 1st paying gig on 2010, but its fairly busy from now on.

Venue is local golf club. The client has created a mini-site for the Party, which is pretty neat. He's also linking to my site, so could be good.

We did a face-to-face meet shortly after booking, they are only 5mins away, and worth spending 1hr over a coffee chatting about the night.

The birthday girl has provided a list of songs, but I think her teenage daughter has created most of this. I know they both like Paul Weller/Jam/Style Council, so for me, the song to play will be Start! by The Jam.

On Saturday night, I'm probably a guest at a 40th. My old manager+wife are holding a joint party.

I was asked to quote, and did- but the gig is 1hr from our base, so it was never going be very cheap, . Needless to say, they've found a guy willing to do it for £180 which I declined to match.

Its in a local hall with no bar, so its bring your own. Will be good to catch up, and let my (thinning) hair down!

@Mitch, glad your gig is more local, and kudos for giving up your time. I hope the night is a good one!

Saturday - Local wedding do for me, not a brilliant venue as it's very echo'ey, a bit tatty and access is a bit of a pain in the biceps.

Been asked to stay modern with the music, with a lot of chart stuff and recent chart remixes.

Last nights 40th was good. I was a bit apprehensive - 1st proper gig of 2010 for me!

The birthday girls sister was giving me grief about set-up time. We were tidying up cables at 6:50, background music was on, but she wanted the lights off which we wouldn't allow until we were complete..

We had agreed a 7pm start, so had a fair amount of time, but under this pressure we skipped a few bits.

The playlist provided by the birthday girl was mainly modern. This was actually chosen by her teenage daughters, at the start of the night, but I stuck to this stuff - I knew food was up at 8:30ish, so kept to her playlist (this wasn't a "must play" btw).

After food, her sister wanted some dancy music. However, she's already moved times around so we were cutting the birthday cake in 15 mins, so I explained its best to bring that forward, or contine until after the cake is cut rather than stop/start. I think she was worried I'd be playing modern all night.

Cake was cut, and birthday girls husband made a nice speech, and so did their daughter, then birthday girl.

Cracked on with the requested "celebration", and then full on oldies. The kids kept asking for modern stuff, and I promised to fit it in later- until the birthday girl came over and appolgeticlally asked if I could play some of the kids requests. Not a problem :-) But the floor did empty quite a bit.

I was then asked for some Black Box etc as "this is our era, and what are you playing this modern :crap: for?!!"

Dropped in Ride on Time, and as expected, the person who requested was nowhere to be found. A few people joined the floor, and a few people (younger kids) left.

Moved into "Little L", and a bit of funky stuff, before action songs then back into more requested modern stuff before New York New York to end.

I've an engagement in the same venue in a month, so had a chat with the management.

Anyway... pics;

I didn't need the subs, but;

a. They were in the car anyway

b. Neater set-up than using Tripods

c. Sounds much better, I run the Mackies with "low-cut" switched on, so a nice 3-way "tri-amp" system.

d. More speakers does not mean mega loud.

I was a bit difficult - I think most guests expected a "typical" 40th, so lots of 80's - but the music appeared to being driven my the teenage girls. I did what I was told (and paid for), but tried to keep most people happy.

Anyway, got a hug from birthday girl, a thanks from her sisters, and a nice chat from the husband who was very pleased.

A few cards were requested, so a fairly successful night.

Its amazing how every tom dick and harry wants to run the show and they think that they are in charge and their music choice is the dogs kahoonas. I think its important to do a bit of mic work to when changing to a particular genre adding that its been heavily requested and that you will be back with some *.* soon. I hate it when people ask for some top drawer tunes early on.

its a skill keeping everybody happy but at least if peope know why you are playing something it removes some of the blame
