Kudos to Alex! Some very nice templates there!

In anyone is not clear on what Joomla is;

Basically, its one of the largest Content Management Systems. It is a free, open source system, and you can remove the copyright message for no fee.

Once installed, you manage your content from a web based admin section. You can upload images/content from the admin area, and also define your menu structures. Generally, you should not have a need to delve into FTP again, and could add content from any web browser.

There are lots, and lots of cool ad-ons (many are free), the commercial ones are fairly low cost.

I'm using Joomla for my new website. Alex was able to spend time talking me through the basics, which gave me a giant head-start. (big thanks Alex!)

Things that are possible;

-Different menus based on your location in the site. For me, this means I'm working on a "mini site" concept for weddings/adult parties etc.

-Nice URLS - so no index.php?id=343423&cid=1232, the page url is made from the title of the content - helpfuly for SEO.

-Page Caching - Joomla can speed up the page generation (giveing you a faster site), but storing frequently requested content.

I'm still fleshing out my site, so are not an expert, but have found it easy to use ONCE I was able to grok the terminology.

Comparing to the Google Sites doc I wrote the other month. This is more technical to set-up, but you can copy your content across, and many features (gallery/contact form etc) can be created.

With the technical set-up, comes more power/flexibility.

For a quick site with no heavy technical requirement, Google Sites (and other similar tools) are a better choice.

Just wanna say that I will gladly offer any advice to forum members completely free, and would be more than happy to assist anyone who is trying to use Joomla.... either PM or leave a thread.... I'm more than happy to speak to you either online, via the phone or provide you with a copy of the " Joomla for Dummies " book.....

Alex,

What you're doing here for the DJs is great. Good luck with your project.

Thanks for the offer of help, I'm going to stick with weebly.com as my free web design/hosting facility as it is entirely drag and drop and idiot proof (need I say more). Takes just under 2 hours to build a site and easy for constant tweaking thereafter.

Here's one I prepared earlier www.unemployedexec.com

Hey Alex,

thanks I'm thinking about setting up my own website, I haven't needed one in the past as work was good through referrals but it's getting really tough this past year. I downloaded joomla for dummies and I think I will give it a go. I may PM you over the next while as I try to set up my site ( I'm sure I'll run into a few problems), i have a bit of web building experience so i'm not a total novice but your offer is much appreciated :dukesy:
