There was a discussion an a local radio station that was comparing Lady GaGa to Madonna.

Could Lady GaGa be the Next Madonna?

Limited talent, more 'style' than substance, full of her own self-importance, won't cover herself up no matter how much you wish she would, publicity-hungry media whore, yep it seems like a good comparison.

Agree with this. Madonna could also play the drums, and Gaga was playing Piano (by ear) from an early age.

Gaga also started out as a songwriter.

If I wasn't a DJ, I'd never buy her music, but can see the appeal and marketing going into her. The songs are also pretty good pop- catchy chorus, good solid dance beat, so musically very similar to Madonna.

Time will tell - I had the "like a virgin" poster on my bedroom wall when the single came out (coorrrrr! :D ) that was many years ago. I feel Madonna is now struggling on her new stuff, but over 26 years of success is hard to discount.

Gaga has 2 albums to her name, so its still early days..

I get the feeling she is very much in control of her look and direction, similar to Madonna.

Such hatred for an artist none of us have ever met or know personally. Calling her a whore? What's that all about????

There seem to be two types of opinion - opinions about her/media machine and then opinions about her music.

Musically these tracks are great productions and the sales figures don't lie. If you don't like her music fine, consider yourself in the 'money spent on music this season' minority.

Personal opinions about her are completely worthless as we know what the press does to celebrities.

From a DJ perspective on a DJ forum I think her music is great dance music and frankly, if her music weren't around there wouldn't be much else going on.

Amen

I personally agree with Teez.. something a bit different and some great poptastic tunes!!

p.s. Mitch meant the following -

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/media_whore

media whore (plural media whores)

1. (derogatory) A person who attempts to transfer or transfers from one entertainment industry to another based only on prior popularity and not necessarily legitimate talent.

2. (derogatory) A person who craves media attention; someone who will apparently do anything to remain in the media spotlight.

I like her and Madonna many a disco would not have been as good without there tunes .

I would give my right arm to have one hit single never mind the amount of sales and fans these two have. far more talent in there little fingers than i have and I am glad they exist and will continue to make recordings.

I dont tend to have a.. this artist is more valid than any other approach.... if its a good tune its a good tune and i buy it.

I would never tell a 21st party consultation that i think gaga has limited talent and a publicity-hungry media whore because i dont think that at all i like her tunes so i can be honest and say yes i have that and i will play that .

Do most of you who really hate GaGa lie to the client or just stand there hating every second the songs are playing? Doesn't seem good for your performance or soul unless you are good actors or have a don't care, I'm in it for the money attitude.

I personally couldnt do that , yes there are songs i don't like but not some that i hate so much as some people here seem to hate Gaga (this is not the first anti - Ga Ga post)

passion for all genres of music is a must for me

for example I recently started listening to Dubstep and there is a lot i dont really like ..nothing i hate and a few cracking tunes so i can say i dont hate Dubstep and i like some with my research to back that up.

going back to GaGa how many of you haven't played pokerface or paparazzi or bad romance? and yes i think she maybe this generations Madonna .

Madonna may have been influenced by other artiste's like Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry but vocally, Madge is definitely her own.

The Ga Ga may be influenced by Madonna's re-invention and 'shock' for attention, but vocally I feel she tries to emulate Cher. In other words, vocally, she ain't no Madonna but has a singing voice that personally, I can't distinguish and say 'hey, that's Lady Ga Ga singing'. Sometimes the vocals are too electronic for me - a bit of an early Kylie, a bit of a caterpillar perhaps, waiting to morph??? But production wise, it's all there at the end of the day.

Ga Ga once said that she was influenced by a few artistes including Queen and Erasure. Yeah right! Maybe the 'Ga Ga' bit is a reference to a Queen track, but when you think about it, Andy Bell used to do silly outrageous costumes and videos in the 90s, so there may well indeed be a tip of the hat to such OTT 'images'?

Indeed, she manipulates the press as good as other artistes and seems to be doing well.

Will she equal Madonna's pop career? Who knows! Remember the same said about Gwen Stefani, comparisons to Madonna just only a few years ago?

Perhaps she should have a new nickname among DJs - I propose Lady Marmite. You either like, or you don't! :yuck:

I read somewhere (can't remember where now) that Lady GAGA whatever her real name is, was discovered in a rough and ready band by a talent scout. The scout was responsible for her reinvention as Lady Gaga, she lost a few pounds, completely changed her look and honed her image to become Lady Gaga. Madonna was just Madonna from day 1, but Lady Gaga is more like an assumed character for this singer in which the image, hype, dress wigs etc are an essential part.

Thanks for clarifying the difference between a whore and a media whore, I know nothing of her private life and have no desire to know anything.

I think the comparison to Madonna is interesting but too early to conclude.

Madge has been doing this a long time and just as much a 'media whore' as Lady Marmite.

The deciding factor will be whether or not Marmite can produce more great albums. I doubt it but we'll see.

She is, however, the star of the moment, far outshining Madge this season but that's been the case with as already mentioned Gwen Stefani etc etc and Madonna keeps surviving.

So I think the comparison will be most accurate once we've seen another one or two albums from Marmite. Either that or when she too goes shopping for designer babies in Africa.

By which time, and more than likely, we will be raving about another 'media whore'.

In a previous post on my visit to Newcastle here song were played more than any other artists in ALL of the bars that we went into over the weekend. IMO Most DJ's and people like her music as it it catchy poppy music.

Lady Marmite is a good name for her.

It may be too early to make a true comparison between Madonna and Lady GaGa but if Marmite keeps going she well could be the next pop queen. Going by single and album sales she is Hot property at the moment with single sales @ over 35 million and Album sales over 10 million.

love her or hate her at 24 years old she is one of the most talked about artists this decade and is earning money from it as are we.

Personally, I don't like her music but then again I don't have to like everything I play. Personally, i've never met her so I can't comment on her personally.

But I guess she earns more than any of us, and is effectively well on the way to being set up for life financially. Can any of us say the same.

Lady GaGa strikes me as derivative, rather than original.

When I saw her on TV a while ago (was it the royal Variety Performance?) sitting at a ridiculously tall piano I was reminded of some of Elton John's outlandish costumes.

Appearance is a large part of her impact.

Whilst some of her material may be reasonably catchy I feel that any substance is outweighed by style.

But if everyone remembers back in the day, Madonna was also found initially, in a going nowhere band, yes the name was the same, but they changed here whole image and style!!!!!!!!!! Lady Ga Ga has been an established Music producer prior to coming onto the scene. The music is fresh, and I think a nice change to the scene, adding some weird looks and options. I think its what music needs from time to time, to give others a kick up the ass!

I cant deny the woman is succesfull but how long will it last. several top tunes in such a short time, going by the histroy books, is no guarantee of a long and prosperous career especially at the top of the game.

Realistically if you take away the OTT theatrics what have you got - a few catchy tunes performed by a moderate singer, where would she be then. But who is the genius here, who designes the stage shows, the outfits, dance routines etc.

if i go to a concert i go to see and hear a band perform their music, not to watch a glorified pantomime.

If she is still going in 30 years time then compare her to madonna but if she makes it throught the next 12 months without going into rehab i will be surprised.

Rather than Madonna. Ziggy Stardust springs to mind The relatively short-lived Ziggy persona had striking visual presentation and was often strange but popular too and no i don't think she will be as influential as Bowie or that she has Bowies talent just that GAGA is a persona like Ziggy... Madonna copied Bowie on the way he reinvented himself and his musical style we will see what comes next.I would much sooner have artists we can debate about than bland forgotton artists the hate means Gaga is having an impact and raising awareness of new music which is many dj's life blood.

Really? One of the most hated acts of the past 10 years or so would have to be Daphne & Celeste (who I rate much more highly than Lady Gargoyle). They were genuinely despised, however their overall impact on music, and their legacy is nothing to get excited about it.

Gargoyle attracts derison for a number of reason; the hype; the arrogance, the fact she is so disingenious, and the fact she has milked the life out of her one album by releasing the album twice and several singles from it, amongst other things.

I regularly play her songs, as people enjoy them. However I could very easily play a set without any of her music that would still entertain my crowd just as much. So I don't buy this whole "as a DJ we should be grateful for her" argument. And I don't have to like every song I play to have a good night, I enojy seeing people having a good time, so will happily play a terrible song and sing along with a smile while people dance.

Mitch,

The only hatred I'm spotting is that which is coming out through your posts!

Sure lots of people like and dislike artists but your posts really seem to go for the throat on this subject.

There is nothing wrong with releasing as many singles from an album if it's proving a success. Even less of an issue now as the majority of people go straight for the album.

Michael Jackson did it, James Blunt did it and I'm sure many other that I can't think of right now.

By all means have the last word on this but I think we all have the message about how you feel

Who? tongue out icon I know if i asked 90% of women aged 30 to 50 to name a Gaga song they could but if i asked the same women to name a Daphne & Celeste song i would bet the number would be tiny in comparison and I am betting in five years time they will remember poker-face or one of her others that's why I say she has an impact.

i don't think i have done a function (not residency night) in the last year where i haven't been requested a Gaga track so if i didn't play a gaga track i wouldn't be entertaining them as much as I could.

Last afternoon i didn't play her songs its not that sort of residency and her songs would have been well out of place ..they love Elvis and Motown , Gene Pitney and Bobby Vee etc etc but at the right function with the right crowd I am grateful she has created songs that are useful tools in entertaining many audience's.

Perhaps by being over the top in my criticism of her, I'm going some small way to counter those who are ridiculously over the top in their praise of her?

And don't start me on James Blunt...

Now if you want some real Marmite music....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jybhTI8qrPE

Who would dare to play this? (Max vol & Max Bass)

:joe:

Blimey Teez, you call that marmite music.

I have just heard Pixie Lott on Graham Norton-now that was marmite.

Florence and the Machine is another marmite contender.

This is not a rehearsal

This is it - grab it while you can.

What does the gaga actually look like. she is one of those people that if you saw her in tesco you wouldnt recognise her, Just like aguilera, with all the different images

im still on the fence when it comes to florence, at least she can hold a note, its just her singing style im not sure of

beyonce, pixie and florence have quite pronounced speech impediments when singing which i find unusual in such a competitive industry.
