jukeboxdj 0
After reading an old thread about the commitments it reminded me that mustang sally was my first karaoke song with friends one night all big karaoke fans and after much nagging and moaning for me to sing a song i said i would sing "Mustang sally" but thinking i was being smart i said it had to be the commitments version only to be shown full a4 page MUSTANG SALLY - THE COMMITTMENTS nothing else on page just that...so much for being smart but in the end i loved it and still enjoy singing the songs from the film now So tell us what was your first karaoke song and how did it go? deejaymitch 0
Great idea for a thread!!! I'd been to a few karaoke nights and sat at my table and sang along with every performer but never had the nerve to get up and sing (almost unbelievable now). Then, on the night before I got my A-Level results, I eventually gave in to my friends' requests and got up and sang Always On My Mind in the style of the late, great Elvis Presley. This was back when I could sing and the reaction I got was incredible. I also got some encouraging words from the host (the best damn karaoke host I've ever seen btw) and from there my addiction was born. For the next few weeks all I sang were Elvis songs, until eventually I got to the stage where I will now sing any song that anyone chooses for me. Raymilkybarkid 0
I can't sing and so have never had a first. To be honest I wouldn't put the audience through the pain of me trying to cat wail through a song. wizard 0
I'm with Raymilkybarkid on that one. Also I hate Karaoke with a vengeance........I wont go within a mile of a venue that has karaoke.... I hate it, despise it, can't abide it........oooh the thought of it makes me cringe. Just my humble opinion of course The oldest swinger in town....... probably. Happy Easter.. well I have seen easter eggs in the shops

Just my humble opinion of course I can't sign for toffee, but have got up and ruined a few tune. I try my best, and actually prefer doing this early on in the night (so normally fairly sober!) I do enjoy Karaoke IF the host is good. There are 2 guys who play my local pub - they pick on many people and really it becomes boring and spiteful. They do have competition in the form of 2 girls who also play the pub. The girls treat it a bit more seriously- and I prefer them. I do confess to a really "great" version of me singing "Shine" last year, this is on Facebook, but hidden from public view! First Karaoke song, probably "I got you babe" with my Wife (at the time)

Also I hate Karaoke with a vengeance........I wont go within a mile of a venue that has karaoke.... I hate it, despise it, can't abide it........oooh the thought of it makes me cringe. Just my humble opinion of course Very strong opinion-care to tell us why? As for myself. When I ran the entertainment for a social club many years ago I thought it would be a good idea to see if Karaoke would work in the club. I used a guy who was the manager of our local music store and he had all the best equipment and he had his wife along as well and she did all the backing vocals. They were very good. Anyway,he took me by surprise and made me start the night off.Never done it before and he picked the song-it was Hello by Lionel Richie. And to my surprise,I actually enjoyed it and it got a fair reaction. Nowadays I very rarely sing but if I do it is always My Way by Frank Sinatra This is not a rehearsal This is it - grab it while you can.
Robster 0
One night many years ago my wife and I went on a night out to my local pub and I had a few too many, the next time I went in the pub a few regulars said “Are you going to sing again?” “Again? “ I said...“Last week you were awesome on karaoke “they replied. I couldn’t even remember singing! Well I got up nervously after several drinks but no where near as many as the week before and sang mustang sally and everyone loved it, that’s when I got the bug! The first song i can remember singing when i was stone cold sober was Rudolph the red nose reindeer ..that was the first song i sang sober on karaoke. There is a massive difference singing sober! now I do that three to four nights a week singing without a drink. Karaoke does make people drink for courage hence landlords like it. I have been to many Discos as a guest i didn't like , i personally wouldn't tarnish all discos with the same brush and say i hate all discos with a passion and avoid them... many do seem to do that with karaoke though. Often and i think many karaoke hosts will affirm this we often get people saying they hate karaoke then at the end of the night they are the ones who want to sing another song ! tongue out icon :funjokeandlaugh: Rob Star EntertainmentsFacebook pagelandline 0161 265 3421Mobile: 0777 99 777
wizard 0
The only reason I hate Karaoke is I cannot stand people who cannot sing standing up and murdering songs.... to me that is not entertainment. If I go out I want to be enetertained. Maybe it is because i do not drink The oldest swinger in town....... probably. Marble 0
My first karaoke song was "yesterday once more" by the Carpenters, I was aged 11 and it was a school competition. Which I won alongside four others. I was addicted from that moment on, though it took a further six years before I could get into a pub to have another go (shhh yes I know the ages don't quite match the law). I don't understand peoples hatred for karaoke, it may not be someones cup of tea but to hate it?? I have however noticed that entertainers tend to prefer karaoke to Disco's or visa versa. It's very rare to find someone with an equal love for both. Personally, I struggle a little as Dj'ing because I'm slightly too "snobby" for disco's. I struggle to bite my tongue when I'm Dj'ing, for example: if someone asks for "In the air tonight" at a wedding all I want to say is "Yes I know the gorilla was cute and the drums are brilliant BUT you are requesting a song about an affair at a wedding. Go away, sit down and think about what you are doing!!!!" I never have the same problem at karaoke, people are singing songs they love, for whatever reason and with as much effort as possible. Good, Bad or whatever, I have so much respect for anyone who wants to share part of themselves with an audience for five minutes.
Dukesy 0
I think it was Your Sixteen (Ringo's version). Can't remember how well it was received. Was too nervous at the time! :sweatdrop:

Marble 0
I tend to lose some of that respect when they sing the same song(s) every night though. Thats where a host should come in, I have very few singers that sing the same songs every night. Gentle encouragement and an active interest in their choice of music tends to help. But in saying that I do have a few offenders that never change their songs, but in a night of 40 different songs, most people can cope if they heard three songs by the same singers last week. Some tracks just work for some people. and as a dj do you not have certain tracks that you play nearly every night? I must confess though, I'm bored of people singing Neil Diamonds's version of Sweet Caroline. Sadly for me, my audience isn't.

I must confess though, I'm bored of people singing Neil Diamonds's version of Sweet Caroline. Sadly for me, my audience isn't. spot on !! I also find audience members request singers to sing the same songs too so its not always the singers fault! I had one girl sing at my karaoke night Alexandra Burke's version of Hallelujah every Thurs ,Friday and Saturday for three months solid !... because people came up to her and asked her would she sing it for them. She now doesn't sing it and has a repertoire of over 80 songs and growing. The DJU top 60 a recent DJ music play list topic of must have songs and the play list section show there are some very firm favourites that DJ's use on a regular basis. Most proper recording artists stick to there hits and album tracks very few can do other genres and styles Many very good artists stick to what they are comfortable with , yes there are exceptions but the majority stick with the same stuff. Karaoke is no different but again seems to get singled out ..Come on Lionel Ritchie stop singing this same old smooth soul and pop tunes sing a bit of Nirvana or sex pistols for us. If a singer can sing a song and it makes them happy , come back and spend money at the venue again , If it doesn't seriously offend the audience and makes them also come back and spend at the venue then i will let them sing it. I do try to encourage singers to sing different songs as Marble does and that is why she is a respected host and is a great KJ. i have read many comments on other forums about how good of a host she is.... a good KJ isn't someone who just puts requests on just as a good DJ isn't IMHO. The first song on karaoke is a tricky one and as a host if i know its there first time i take special care of the mix , the version and also advise on the song selection. UKHero 0
My first karaoke song was when #i was doing a charity karaoke gig in the late 80's. I never sung at a karaoke before even though I had been in a band playing bass and singing BVs. They all put money up for me to sing so did I just wanna be yourTeddy bear by Elvis. I thought it was an easy and short song lol... Still not keen on singing at karaoke as I dont think it is set up the best for singing as no fold back is provided etc. When I do a karaoke I try to provide as good a quality set up as a singer would use but even so I dont provide fold back maybe I should? But with the lack of mic control from most punters I think we have enough trouble getting a decent level before feedback with out monitors etc. I did a Karaoke last night at a pub that wants it every week. It amazes me how many people pick a tune and only know the chorus. So you get mumbles for the verse then loud singing for the chorus. God bless the karaoke singer. I GOT THE X FACTOR!!!!! vokf 0
Yeah but isn't it amazing the amount of people who think they can sing when they can not lol... Nik Reminder: This area is public viewable to non-registered members!!! I see Karaoke as a bit of fun. This doesn't mean messing around (deliberately singing badly), but a way to relax and have a fun night with your friends. If a guest can't sing, so what? If they think they are good and keep requesting songs, then I'd guess as a Karaoke Host, you should be able to to control what they sing.

deejaymitch 0
In my opinion karaoke should never be about how good the singers are (technically), and it should never be a talent contest, that is a very differetn type of entertainment. Karaoke should be a fun environment where everybody feels comfortable singing wothout being judged or mocked.
