The whole idea of donations / subs is irrelevant. yes its some peoples way of saying thank you for support and there is nothing wrong with that. at the end of the day a forum cost money to run and im sure many forum admins would appreciate such a gesture.

however its not the be all and end all and certainly is not a good idea in general. if you subscribe to a forum then in a moment of madness do the keyboard warrior attitude then would you expect a refund when you are kicked off.

Back to topic. In my short membership DJ@ has been invaluable. it was more than cheap pli. I could have found that from numerous sources but chose DJ@ after some consultation through DJU. It was the support and advice that came FREE made all the difference. I was not just a number but a person wanting to raise his game.

with respect to the forum and keyboard warrior in us, i plead guilty as many would and can now fully understand where Dan is coming from. I have googled specific information without the intention of looking for DJU posts but they come up so i can now see what damag/potential damage we have been doing.

I sincerely hope that the forum continues and am one shamed individual who will think a lot more before posting in future.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about.

It's a great forum where members have freedom of speech (mostly).

If they want to have a winge here, then let them. That's what the internet is all about.

There is always the temptation to become reliant on the income from donations also, to the point where double standards can ensue. I can't comment on how the subscription model works on other DJ forums because i'm not a member of them, however I have seen the process abused on some other non topical forums which i've been a member of in the past.

On at least one of these forums, I witnessed an Admin who had an active member who was a very loyal supporter and contributed several generous donations towards the running of the forum. Unfortunately, this member also seemed to think that by doing this, it also bought him immunity from any action by the admin and moderators when his behaviour crossed the line ( which was often). In some ways he was correct, as the admin was unwilling to rock the boat with this individual and ask them to wind their neck in, not because of the risk of the person asking for a refund, but rather of the risk of the member spitting out his dummy and leaving the forum (with the usual swan song that we've all witnessed whatever forum(s) we use), essentially losing him his 'star' donator and inevitably even more generous donations from him in the future. In a lot of ways these double standards bred more ill feeling from the rest of the membership.

I'm not saying that the philosophy of asking for donations to support a forum is wrong, I just don't feel that it is right for my forum and its not an area which I would have actively considered. In my experience, just making a donation doesn't automatically change a persons attitude, nor make the general demeanour of a forum any better. I've seen just as many individuals being the P.I.T.A with Sponsorship status 'proudly' in their profiles as I have ordinary non subscribing members.

Besides, it can be advantageous to maintain your independance. :pro:

If members want to show their appreciation, then all they need to do is to respect each other and the forum, in the manner of which it is provded for them, and that costs nothing other than a little restraint and professional courtesy and common sense, but there doesn't always seem to be monopoly of that in our industry.

If members want to show appreciation to me, then they can utilise old fashioned, time honoured traditional methods and buy me a pint next time we meet. :D

Either way, nothing in relation to any decision i've made or which has been raised on this thread is financial, so the whole point is mute in this respect. DJU has always been financed by me personally, and was never funded by DJ@ as I recognised that many members of DJ@ were not members of DJU nor had any wish to become one, therefore it would have been wrong to link them both together financially.

I think you're missing the point that DJU is trying to promote professionalism.

I've had a bride find a post I made about her 2nd dance, literally minutes after I posted. Imagine if the discussion was slating her choice, and/or with any bickering from members - it would not portray DJs in a good light.

People that want free speech are welcome to start their own forum.

Some have, and have their own set of rules.

I admin a small forum (for Carmens scooter buddies), this is very quiet (although busier that some other DJ forums!).

Its a closed forum, so mates only - lots of dodgy jokes/swearing, but also support (and not just scooter chat).

Now, a DJ forum like this will struggle - you need some posts to be exposed to spark some initial interest, and to be picked up on search engines.

Once some posts are public, then those creating the posts need to be aware that this is now a public announcement, and they should be aware that anyone can make a blanket judgement on them, and the profession based on some forum banter.

Thats also not withstanding the fact that Freedom of speech is an American constitution, which only limits the powers of the Government in censoring public speech. It doesn't restrict or prevent people from starting on/offline clubs, associations or forums and introducing and policing their own individual code of conduct based on the level of professionalism they want to achieve and maintain smile icon

So if you want it in its fullest and historical sense, then go find a forum run by Obama or the American Government and fill yer boots :D

Besides, if you read the constitution to its fullest extent you will see that it has limitations that protect against encroaching on the freedoms and rights of others within that same constitution :D .

Its also interesting (and amusing) to note that the U.S - coincidentally currently has the highest number of private lawsuits originating from defamatory comments made on forums and social networking sites made by people in relation to their bosses, neighbours and even own family members. I suppose even in the land which originated, pioneered and still promotes the whole 'Freedom of Speech' concept, you are not immune from just saying what you please without accepting that the comments you choose to make, could come back and bite you on the ass. :D

Although it does highlight another reason for not accepting donations, as no doubt some would feel that it somehow bought them some additional rights :joe:

The same applies, if you excercised your freedom of speech rights by joking with airport staff that you had a bomb in your suitcase

I don't see an issue if someone on here wants a moan about something providing it's within the agreed rules and not visable to joe public, then that can be a good thing

Spot on

I was a mod here for a very short while and i was amazed at the amount of reported posts etc

Oh yes, its a full time job which carries a volunteers wage, which probably explained the modertor apathy.

I was a Mod on here for 2 years. It is a job which requires some dedication and time. It is even more difficult for those like me who also have a full job doing something else.

I was offered the role of Mod on here once but turned it down. The reason was I did not feel qualified to edit peoples posts and make judgements on people. Its a thankless task and I do admire anyone who can do it well.

I didn't realise we were giving Dan a say!!! I thought between us all we had already decided that the forum was dead and done our mourning. I think we got just a little off topic :aa

Judging by the number of new threads Dukesy has started in the last 24 hours, and the amount of participation in them, I hope he sees that it's worth carrying on.

I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. Including club residencies, karaoke, pub quizzes, specialised wedding service, Master of Ceremonies, Compere, Night at the Races and much more.
