Amateur Mistake

Was at my Karaoke residency tonight, first hour and a half was good, place was getting nicely full and lively and then disaster!! The single most embaressing thing to ever happen me since I started DJing. Sound died completely and my laptop screen was blank, backup CD's were in the car outside so I was in trouble if I couldn't get the sound going again, next thing I saw a message on my laptop screen "battery low 7%", I had only forgotten to plug it in and it had died LOL. Perhaps VDJ can introduce a battery symbol on their nest update, got the sound back on pretty quickly once I realised what was wrong, the girls sitting near me realised what was going on and were in stitches, I could only laugh myself at making such an elementary mistake. Great night after that thankfully

 

Anybody else care to share any stories of ridiculous mistakes ye have made?

Snap, I did that recently and it is embarrassing but like you I quickly recovered.

My mistakes have mainly been playing the wrong song;

-500 Miles (Little Britan Version instead of the normal one)

-Riverside (bad sweary version instead of the radio edit - at my daughters 13th)

 

I've made simple errors - on DMX cabling, ie DMX Master

The good thing about mistakes is that you won't do it again

I had pretty much the same thing happen a while back. I have my laptop and HD in a case but the cable to the laptop had slipped out I had not noticed. DOH!!!!

 

 

I have been DJing since 1981 and have done many silly things in that time From picking up the needle on the deck playing to ejecting the CD that was playing to the laptop not being plugged in lol.

 

Its not the mistake it is how you recover from that mistake and you seem to have done well.

Anther goofball here too, difference is mine was plugged in just not switched on. I now run vdj on with windows task bar showing.

Have ejected and stopped the wrong CD playing... Accidentally started the next CD before the other one finished... (Cueing fail!)..

Haven't we all!!

 

Classic is "Oh, my god, no sound!" Frantic check of all connections/ cables/ power points ............ only to realise the amp is not switched on! :wall:

 

 

But, oh, that feeling in the stomach before you spot it. :fright:

the most useful function to me on any cd-decks is "dont eject a playing cd"

 

I still try regularly - it just doesnt work anymore.

 

Also since I rarely use the cross fader - the times i do i always forget to re-centralise it after mix - next song just never starts.....

Oh another time - power provided by a venue was on an extension cable.. I tripped on the extension cable (they hadn't taped it down properly), and knocked the plug out of it.. dead sound for a few seconds whilst I realised wtf was going on... :damn:

 

I soon got hold of gaffer tape and it didn't move again after that...

I can put my hands up to spending 20 minutes checking cables as there was no sound to the speakers .... only to find that the mixer wasn't switched on

I've made most of the mistakes above, and many more, but my most regular is faux pas is starting to talk without turning the mic/mic volume on. Such a basic thing, but I seem to have a really mental block.

Never Trust ANYBODY ELSE todo things properly. Always check for yourself. "Yes, that power socket is fine." Not until my tester says it is!

 

I've been back to the venue since, and I almost lambasted the techie there for not taping down another trailing socket properly to feed a projector... Moreso, as this particular venue wants to see your PLI, PAT, trouser length and shoe size before the event!

I did this once and once only...in a superclub of 1600 people. The manager was not impressed!

the only 2 mistakes ive ever made is.

 

-ejecting the wrong cd

-announceing the wrong song title over the mic :S

The worst I have ever done was to get the Brides name wrong when announcing the first dance.........she looked at her husband and shouted......who's Laura. howls of laughter from the watching crowd and luckily they all laughed it off...........needless to say I was probably the most embarrassed.

 

luckily I can't eject a playing CD the decks won't let me, I have pressed the start button on the wrong CD player a few times stopping the track that is currently playing........this normally happens when someone is talking to me as I am trying to mix........well I blame it on that anyway :joe:

Talking into the mic whilst it's not switched on.

Forgetting to plug my laptop charger in.

 

I always lie my mic down on the mixing desk in the club I work at on weekends. The desk is a 12 channel sound desk going into the house sound system. There's a shelf above it with the monitors on for the in house PC system. It's very dark in the booth so you can't really see much of the mixing desk without a torch. I placed my mic down on the desk one night after doing a big birthday dedication, and started playing sex on fire. the dance floor was instantly going wild. As I placed my mic down I managed to turn off the desk with the mic. Not knowing what had happened it seemed like an eternity to get the problem sorted.

 

 

When I turned up to work last friday I had left my charger at home. Handy considering the battery for my main work machine is pretty much dead and in need of replacement. Also there's the fact that the in house PC hasn't had any new tracks put onto it since long before I started. As a rule I tend not to plug my external hard drive into anyone else's machine after I did that once and got a virus deleting most of my music. I had to use really old tracks on the club's machine until the missus made it along with my charger (an hour after I started) No one really noticed anyway as the beginning of the night is normally a lot more classic rock based than chart based.

 

To be honest my main mistake is often leaving a vital cable at home. Normally when the missus is moaning on at me about something as I'm getting packed lol :P
