Hi All

 

This is probably going to be my last posting before the new year so may I take this opportunity to wish one and all a Very Merry Christmas and an EXTREMELY Prosperous and busy New Year

 

Right that's done so onto the reason for the post....The American DJ Revo 4

 

I have just taken delivery of a new one (early Christmas Pressie!) and to say I'm slightly disapointed would be putting it mildly

 

As there is no-one locally to me where I can see it in action I rely heavily on comments and youtube vids of lights in action to make a choice, however after seeing the video for this unit I believed that it was the one I was looking for to fill the middle of the dancefloor in a retro 70's style with the square pattern of lights.

 

Oh boy was I wrong the spread seems very small to me and with the light mounted about 8 feet from the floor and angled towards the floor the area covered is probably no more than 10 square feet!

 

The vids show an area a great deal larger so I am asking if anyine else has one of these units if it is the same for them or has my lense been put in the wrong way round?

So any suggestions would be greatfully received as always

As you say in the video, this looks to be a floor filler. You can tell from the items in the foreground that it covers a large area.

 

I don't have one of these but these were highly rated by quite a few members on here when it was launched. Firstr port of call would be the retailer and ask him to check.

I don't have this exact effect but I have one very similar and to be honest I think that's where you're going wrong.

To get the massive coverage in a large room you need to angle the light just slightly lower than horizontal, the spread on mine if I do that is enormous. Obviously the lower you point it, the lower the spread of beams will be.

Thanks guys I shall make the relevant enquiries

 

Fester I agree that you need to angle these at the area it's just when I run it next to my Acme Impossiled this light blows the other out of the water in terms of coverage, it's just I got bored with the rather limited shows the Acme puts on and was hoping that the Revo 4 would fill its shoes but alas NO! :hurt:

 

So I am going to try to change the lense around later to see if that is the cause

 

Will let you know but in the meantime any other comments would be most welcome :pro:

i love my revo 4's i think the only thing i would change with them would be to focus them with an amount of keystone as you never get a full square on the dancefloor - well not unless you can mount the effect directly above the floor...

 

for this reason i normally focus the effect on to the back wall or ceiling of the venue and let my revo 3s do the main floor lighting... defeats the object somewhat of this unit but there you go!

 

check out those effects in the video.. someone has spent some time with the dmx programming ;)

IMHO probably one of the most over-rated effects on the market....and I used to sell them. To be honest I got them on the strength of that video. I wish I'd studied it more closely.

 

There are 2 important factors to bear in mind when watching this type of video:

 

Firstly, video cameras are more sensitive than the human eye and leds and lamps look much brighter on recordings than they actually are. Try it with your phone.

 

Secondly, they are made by the supplier in order to sell the product so they will take steps to ensure it looks as good as possible, often with no sense of perspective. I made an Acme MiracLED look huge by blacking out the room and filming it from 3 metres away. It could have been something 10 times bigger in Wembley stadium for all anyone knew.

 

Actually this particular video does have perspective. Take a look at the winch stand on the right of this video and the illuminated part of the wall behind it. The stand's winder would be at waist height, ie. around 800mm and the legs would be around 1m apart which gives an idea of the size of the room, so by following the top of the shadow on the wall into the distance I would guess that the light is only about 1.5 - 2m above the floor. That is very low for gigging but it's a clever video nonetheless.

 

As already mentioned, try to see effects in the flesh first.

A local nightclub where I did an install at wanted 2 of these lights.

Its quite strange one of them has a larger spread than the other, and is not as bright. Almost like its out of focus. I did make the owner aware but they just wanted the lights put up and working as it was their grand opening. It did anoy me knowing there was a light that wasnt functioning properly that I had put up, but it was at the owners request. I have heard similar stories of other people that have had these lights.

Try exchanging it, then fingers crossed this would deal with the problem.

I find these to be a good floor filler, in some ways i suppose you could shine onto a wall and use as a video wall style effect, or how about from underneath a clear floor
