I Seem To Be Playing The Wrong Chart/upto Date Music

Recommended Posts

I would be interested to know what modern\recent tracks people are finding work well at the moment.

I like to make sure that I play some recent tracks as well as the usual 60's, 70's 80's 90's etc and at present include some Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Katy B (lights on), Rihanna (Only Girl), No Speak Americano, Black Eyed Peas but am getting no reaction.

I must admit to sticking more to the danceable recent tracks as stated above however I am finding that I am getting requests for JLS, Justin Bielber, Taio Cruz.

This is mainly at weddings and dinner dances over Christmas and New Year.

Am I just going for the wrong tracks or have I just been unlucky in that the functions consist of mothers who have been brainwashed by there teenage children?

I have had good reactions to the artists you mentioned so maybe you have just been unlucky.

The oldest swinger in town....... probably. Happy Easter.. well I have seen easter eggs in the shops

Possibly down to pot luck - you can never guage what is going to work / not work until the night itself...

I've had massive reactions to songs which I didn't expect to work or never thought about before (they were requests)..

Have been listening to the latest CD Pool Radio disc and there's a few tracks on there I forsee as being potentially quite big (Katy Perry - Peacock - I wonder why?! And A Kylie + 2 others track, which imho i keep playing a lot!)..

Anyway, I've been on the italian wine (and at a non-dj client dinner).. and err ought to go bed or something.

nothing wrong with your list TBH, must be unlucky. I've been playing recentish tracks from artsist such as Florence and the Machine, both "you've got the love / You got the dirtee love" proving popular, Eliza doolittle "pack Up", Yolanda B Cools "We no Speak Americano" and going back a year with Paulo Nutini's "Lead in your Pencil" - all very popular, but not what you'd call absolutely current. Too many times I've tried to keep up with the most current chart hits at events for them to completely bomb. Leave it a month or two and they become classics!

Have to say for me that Black Eye Peas - I gotta feeling is the new Abba - Dancing Queen. I have people of all ages and i mean 7 to 70 dancing, badly on some occasions, to this where as the old standards like abba etc fail to raise an eyebrow.

to echo the above, unlucky really - keep pluggin away and chop & change a bit to see what happens.

Funny, I am in the same situation as Supradave.

I'd like to play a few up to date songs each gig but they end up being "floorkillers" instead of "floorfillers".

I now play the current stuff to give the audience a break from dancing.

How times have changed.

John

BEP - I gotta feeling I've not actually played it at a couple of gigs now... I've also moved it to "later" in the evening (last hour) when I do play it...

Cheers,

Nothing wrong with any of those tunes, the big one at the moment is Rihanna 'Whats my name', also Barbra Streisland, Who's that Chick, Whip my Hair and anything featuring David Guetta LOL. It depends on the crowd I guess. I also really like Shakira's 'Waka Waka', I still play it at most gigs even though it's out a long time now and it goes down really well, I also VJ and the video is great too.

It is indeed, not something you'll find me listening to in the car, but it goes down well in the res for some strange reason. Like alot of chart music it is utter crap but it's not up to me to dictate to clients what they should dance to. Goes down a storm at youth discos too, especially when I play the vid.

Another tune to watch out for is

, not sure if it's released yet but I reckon it'll be a big one, I've been playing it the past few weeks and it's going down really well.

I agree with all the replies, the playlist looks fine. Sometimes even the “Certain Floorfillers” fail, who knows why. My advice would be keep trying them, but also add the requests you get to your library. “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz is a great track.

It is very interesting for me to read the posts in this thread. I DJ’ed in the UK for many year but now live and work in the U.S. There are a number of the track listed here that I don’t recognize, (different markets I guess). So my suggestions may not work for you, but 90% of my events are weddings and when playing chart music, these are my floor fillers.

DJ’s Got Us Falling in Love – Usher

I Gotta Feeling - Black Eyed Peas

Dynamite - Taio Cruz

Yeah! – Usher (Still Popular)

The Way I Are – Timbarland

Low – Flo Rida

Anything By Lady Gaga

Californian Gurls – Katy Perry (Huge at the Moment).

Forever – Chris Brown

The Time (Dirty Bit) - Black Eyed Peas (My Newest “Hot” Track)

Not sure how helpful this will be to UK DJ’s, but I’m interested to know how many of the above are hits there.

OK now I really love this forum. So good to be able to follow things “Back Home”

  • 2 weeks later...

Nothing wrong with any tracks you have picked I think the best thing to do is decide not what to play but when to play, If i play barbra striesand at 9:00pm im gunna get a dif reaction at 12:00pm, just depends on the crowd i guess buts thats how it is in my bar.

I try and get some new stuff in - the majority of it early on (if its very current) then some in the buffet (eliza doolittle etc) and if needs be the likes of Alexandra Burke, Rihanna, Katy Perry etc in the main party section.

The problem for me with the 'new' stuff being asked for (especially the likes of Tinie Tempah, Akon etc) is it is very slow tempo'd/feel in comparison to the older party songs, and doesnt spell 'party' to me - its just something the younger ones stand about on the dancefloor to. (am I sounding old!) :D and for that reason I try to avoid it in the main 'party' section - 10pm onwards.

The likes of Black Eyed Peas (I gotta feeling) Amy Winehouse (Valerie) Kings of Leon (sex on fire) etc though are 'proper' party songs and deserve to be classed as that, and will be around for years - I cant say that for 99% of the new stuff though.

If youre having no luck, try playing them in small batches of say 3 or 4 together - if they bomb then at least youve given them a go, if not and youve got a few dancing its a good start to build from.

I always make my 'start to buffet' as eclectic and mixed up as possible - something for everyone - you can judge what people are looking like they will enjoy and build from there.
