Hi Guys,

I have got my 1st christening gig in March and would be gratefull for any advice with regards to music etc, the parents are young and trendy so to say.

Any advice, tips greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Lots of variables...

Are you there for background music (so probably no lights?), or is it an evening gig?

Just play a typical mix of stuff, there will probably be grandparents (who may only be in their 40s), and also great grand parents, aunts, uncles, mates, kids.

Chat to the parents to see if they want anything specific, but otherwise a normal chat mix spanning 80s to modern. Cater to the majority (and your client), so watch out for kids asking for every Justtin Beiber song ever made...

If you're happy to run a few games, call the parents and find out if they want anything specific, and ask how many children will be there...

Nothing wrong in finding out what the clients want, and it could easily result in more work (Birthdays/Weddings)...

From experience you will find it hard to get people up dancing at a christening, they are their to drink mainly on a Sunday afternoon and have a bit of food, you will normally find christenings are fairly long hours anyway, so if you dont have them up dancing as soon as the food has finished dont worry about it, myself and a lot of DJs I know all have the same experience.

When I do christenings I am booked normally as a kids entertainer, so if it is 5 hours long I I will do a couple of games every 20 mins, dont give them everything within the first hour or you will have nothing left. Karaoke is normally a good one to do at Christenings.

Personally I dont mind doing christenings but it isnt one of my favourite functions to do, they can drag on but normally they will have a good time and normally so drunk by the last couple of hours to have a dance anyway.

Treat it just like every other function. Give the people what they ask for, do your best and it's up to them to make the party. If they don't, you can still walk away knowing that you did a good job.

I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. Including club residencies, karaoke, pub quizzes, specialised wedding service, Master of Ceremonies, Compere, Night at the Races and much more.

  • 4 weeks later...

as mentioned above christenings are funny things - its daytime, people are that up for a party, theyre not drunk (well not to start with!) so its hard to 'create' a party atmosphere.

a lot of guests disappear during the afternoon, the main aspect to remember is there will be lots of kids, so have a lot of current kids party songs ready to keep them happy. good luck
