What Lights Would You Go For ?

Hi all, if you specialised in 40th birthday discos & weddings and you had no lights and had £300 to buy lights and wanted a really great effect, which had to be sound to light, and no blinding strobes, which lights would you choose please?

 

Any help appreciated.

I'd get some quality used lights, Twister 4's paired together make a great effect, they are cheap now. Maybe a small cluster laser and a new lower priced LED unit, together should just make your budget, and is a good start.

I've got an American DJ LED light, which I think has been replaced by the jewel LED in the current range (one of the cheaper models because it was only an additional extra ) and I've seen some of their more expensive ones in local clubs. I'd take a look at their range. Quite a lot of the UK websites sell them. The one I have is sound to light activated.

 

One of the American DJ LED lights that I've seen recently that I really like the look of is the Gobo Motion LED. I like gobos anyway and I think it looks more interesting than what I've been seeing a lot of recently. I gather that it isn't a 'blinding strobe' either. I've got a great old halogen lamp effect that's got some great gobo patterns but when used as a sound to light effect, I find it a bit too full on so I know what you mean about the 'blinding strobe' thing.

 

To be honest I find a lot of the current LED lights are very similar - the red, blue, green and white dot patterns but I think one or two of that type are a good investment. They're pretty inoffensive but I like to have something a little different in my rig too. Hence this is why I've kept my old scanners.

 

 

As retrodisco recommended, I think it's also worth getting hold of a second hand quality effect too. It might be worth seeing if any local DJs in your area have anything they'd consider selling.

I bought a used pair of twister 4 hp's a few years back, cleaned them up and fitted new lampholders and they still work like new, that Abstract stuff was built to last. £200-£250 quid should do it, so you should have change for some LED wash effects or something if you don't already have some. There are any number of similar effects to the twisters, like Datamoons etc, I find the inbuilt programs on the 4hp's to be very good, just link them and you're set. I had a pair of datamoons at one stage and they required a bit of controlling.

 

The new LED stuff looks good, like the Acme Cheetahs which are supposed to be very bright with proper gobos, very expensive though so I'd go with option 1.

Coming from someone who hates LED fixtures.....

What about a pair of Datamoons? Ok so they're getting on a bit now but they're still bright, can work sound to light, linked, dmx'd or with the hand controller plus you can get 2 in a flight case with dmx cable and controller for just over £200.
