I've never actually tried it but I would have thought it unlikely as there is no harmonised standard as to how CD control panels communicate with their base units, and the messages from the control unit are coded and sent by some kind of data stream through the link cable, which is then decoded and turned into signals which carry out the intended function in the main base unit.

 

At best, it probably wouldn'g do anything or you'd probably get strange mixed up behaviour, such as pressing 'play' changes the tracks, but at worst you may bugger up the control panel, base unit or both and be far worse off!.

 

Have you lost one half or had it stolen?

no the base units lasers or motors wore out and someone was selling a base unit only on ebay so though i could change it
