Kingsley 0
Does anybody know of any good DJ agency's or if there is it worthwhile signing up to?
McCardle 1
Most of the Agencies in my area are suffering the effects of the recession like most other companies, and are struggling to find enough work for their existing artists, and haven't taken on new acts / DJ's now for a number of years. They also have plenty of DJ's to choose from, as they seriously outnumber the number of agencies so you need to really have a show which offers something different / unique or many years' experience in order to jump the queue It might be different in other areas of course, but getting on an Agents' books never was an easy task, and its even harder these days. A word of warning, don't fall into the trap of signing up for these subscription based 'agents', the type who take a payment up front with the promise of finding you loads of work, these are little more than online directories and enquiry harvesters and forwarders and so the promised work rarely materialises after the payment has been made. A decent and honest agent will not take a penny from you up front, instead they will work on a commission basis, often invoicing and taking payment from the client, deducting their commission and then forwarding you the balance in a timely manner after the gig. Some agents will trust you to take the full payment from the client, and send them the commission. But under no circumstances should you pay them anything before the work has been confirmed and the booking done!. In other words, a proper agent backs his / her business confidence with the fact that unless he / she gets you work, then they don't get paid, anybody asking for money from you upfront, usually with empty promises should be avoided like the plague. A fair commission these days is usually between 20% and 30% but can vary between 15% and 33% depending on the fees they charge and the quality / type of work. But personally, I think you are much better off perfecting your own marketing skills, trawl a few pubs and hotels meeting managers and selling your business to them as unfortunately getting on to an Agents' books is extremely difficult these days and won't happen overnight.
