New To Djing, In Search Of Some Advice

Hi, I was looking for some advice to start DJing. Never done anything like it before but I enjoy listening to music all the time, and I am always thinking of which songs will go well with each other.

Being a DJ obviously means playing something for everybody and perhaps even the types of music which you are not familiar with, so if you are doing general family functions and weddings then you are going to have to start building a vast music collection covering everything from Rock and Roll, Motown, 60's - 2000's as well as whatever is in the charts at the time.

 

Do a search of the forum for the world "playlist" it will bring up lots of discussions on the subject and give you an idea of what other DJ's play.

 

Its also good business practice as well, to ask the client / bride and groom to provide a request list before the function. This will at least give you a good idea of the type of music that they are into, encourage them to also ask their guests to make their requests too, or put some request slips onto tables and around the bar after you have set up, so your audience can make their own requests to you on the night.

Build a good library of music. Do a few functions for family or friends free. Soon you will learn what works.

Thanks for your advice, but even still functions are something that are way off in the distance at the minute. I was wondering what the best ways are to learn how to do things, being a complete novice at the moment.

Is there a DJ local to you that you know?....If so you could ask him if you could go along on a few gigs and see what goes on

 

I myself did this 20 odd years ago when i was just 17 years old and became a roadie for a few years and this was a great start to leaning how its all done and how to be a DJ on my own

Hi,

 

I would totally agree with the suggestion above. On-the-job learning is the way forward.

 

Even if you don't know anyone personally then have a word with friends/family to see if they know anyone or offer your services for free to an established/respected DJ in the area (we could all use someone to help carry gear etc.). I'm not suggesting you let yourself be taken for a mug but it's the best way to learn and, with the right DJ, you will learn more in a few gigs than you could with all the advice and research in the world.

 

With a bit of luck, with a bit of enthusiasm you may even get some good contacts.
