Behringer Ddm4000 Mixer Failure

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I hope someone can help - I cannot find anything on the internet about this.....

The above link is of a video I made of my mixer failing.

What happens is, you turn it on, it will work fine for about 30 seconds then the screen will go blank and it just freezes. Music will stop too. That's on a good day. Sometimes, you just turn it on and the screen is blank straight away.

I think it's brain dead and needs to go in the bin or eBay as spares but there might be someone out there who may have an idea or two! ;-)

One question - can you factory reset the unit without a screen???

Thank you in anticipation of any help that can be given!

Wayne.

PS Nice forum by the way. I have been looking around while waiting for my application to be approved. Will come back often!

Thats a fairly complicated mixer - electronics wise, and unless you know your way around electronics, know how to fault find a circuit and have a circuit diagram / service manual as well as various test equipment, I think finding a fault will be a needle in a haystack.

I suspect its an electronics issue, rather than a hardware / firmware fault, and the best advice is to send it to a service center for repair.

We have a service engineer who posts on the forum, who repairs this type of stuff everybody, and he may be able to give you and idea of how much it will cost to repair, or at least a cost of diagnosing the problem

His profile link is below, you can use the 'PM' or 'Email' link to send him either a forum personal message or email as you prefer

Thank you McCardle and superstardeejay for you answers.

Do you think it is fixable or is it scrap?

If it is fixable, do you know where I could get the part(s) and is it user fixable?

If I was to send it to Behringer, as a guess (using your knowledge), how much do you think they will charge? (a guess I know!)

Thanks again!

Wayne

Within reason, pretty much anything is fixable depending on how much money you throw at it!, whether its considered economically repairable depends largely on your own opinion and budget. I can see that this is a fairly expensive mixer, and if its otherwise still in good pre-fault condition, and you use it on a regular basis, then I would imagine anything upto half of its replacement cost would be a viable repair cost, but thats just my personal opinion, if it belonged to me.

As for the repair cost, well thats a 'how long is a piece of string' type question and the cost would depend on where you take it, and the amount of time required to fault find, quote and repair. Generally you are paying somebody for the time and skill required to identify the fault, and of course all of that would depend on the complexity of the fault.

do you know where I could get the part(s) and is it user fixable?

Unless its a memory or microprocessor based device which contains custom programmed firmware or software, You can buy most replacement components such as Caps, diodes, Resistors, IC's etc off the shelf from places like RS, Farnell, CPC, Cricklewood Electronics, Rapid Electronics etc. But again, it depends on whether you have the tools and skills required to identify the failed component(s), remove them and then solder in replacements. If the faulty components are surface mount, then it requires even more skill, tools etc.

The fault could be something as simple as a dry joint, or a component overheating, or it could be something far more complex. Its a bit like the DJ version of your car breaking down and expecting a quote from the Garage over the phone, just on the basis of "It won't start" :D

In all fairness, if you could repair it, and had the electronics experience required to do so, then I suspect you wouldn't be asking the question on whether you could or not on here :D . So personally if was you, i'd be taking it to an engineer to have the work done, or at least get a quote for it.

Sending it to Behringer is possibly the most expensive option as they would generally just replace the entire populated PCB with a new one from their Parts dept in Europe (and charge you royally for it). In worst case, a decent local electronics repair shop should be able to quote for a repair, even if there isn't a specialist Audio / Lighting / DJ retailer locally who has repair facilities.
