Recommended Posts

hi there evry1...

well i am just about to buy the domain and start setting up my own web page, for promotion and just to put a face to the name. the problem is not finding the domain name, in fact i have bought that already for £2 per year. the only problem is that i have no clue what so ever how to set up a webpage... what prgrams do you need (pref. ones for beginners) and where to get or download them...

and i would appreciate some general info on how your web pages are, what they contain, how long it took you, etc, etc, etc....

just keep me posted please, as i wanna get this page sorted and up on the net.

fanks already for every1 who replies..

There are numerous packages out there to help you write websites, like microsoft frontpage, fream weaver etc, I personally use notepad but this requires you to know HTML.

My website has been made up over the last 2 weeks, there is a link at the bottom of this post.

Once you have made your site you will need to get it hosted.

There are places you can get this done for free but I pay £20 a year and get all sorts of extra features.

hope this helps

Before the web masters get on here and blind you with science I am novice when it comes to web sites but I managed to produce my own using MS Publisher. The templates are already there for you to fill in and all the HTML (I think that's the right thing) is done behind the scenes for you.

Last month when I was updating my site I tried Dreamweaver and 3 other programs but found them too involved so after a full day went back to the tried & trusted method.

Before even sitting at your keyboard plan your site on paper eg how many pages, content of each page etc, then it's just a case of putting it in all the right places. Mine took me a day (don't laugh), with a few adjustments the next day having slept on it and voila!!!

The important thing to do is use preview and double check that everything is OK & works before putting it 'live' on the net. I know that my own site is not perfect as I put it on here for review at the beginning of Jan and there are a few changes I need to make but it's working and already in one month has secured 8 bookings so it can't be all bad.

The other advice I can offer is keep it simple - my last site was all flash, bang wallop and didn't generate half as much success as this one.

Good luck http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hi Kobe

I won't stun your brain with a load of techno waffle as I don't like that either.

I wouldn't consider myself an expert by any stretch of the imagination, however I know a bit about a lot http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

If you've never dealt with the fun area that is website dsign, html etc, go to the following website, this will sort you out no worries.

http://newbieclub.com/builder/

I have no affiliation with the company other than to say if you want a no nonsense method of getting things done, this is the place to get the info. yes it'll cost you a tenner or so, but god, it's cheaper than getting someone to do it for you.

Let me know how you get on and good luck

hey kobe,

you might want to try MS Word or even Powerpoint for your site. Those are fairly easy to use(if you can type and import pics then its just a matter of saving as html). Then there is Frontpage i tried the 2000 version and it was very straight forward, but I find its better to learn a bit of htmml and then use notepad. Dreamweaver is also good, but this program gets a bit involved... not really for a person without html knowledge. anyhoo...hope this helped.

Hi

Word of warning from you resident grumpy git.

Never, even if you're a newbie use word!

It generates so much code that you pages will take an age to load and no one will stay long enough to see the results.

Also, word designed pages will tend to look different once they've been uploaded to a server.

If you're ok with word, then use Frontpage as they're both very very similar.

However, my initial advice stands.

It's important to get a basic grasp of the HTML language as, programs like Frontpage, or any othe for that matter will tend to do things that aren't to your liking, so being able to get in there amongst the code to do a bit of tweeking will definitely help.

If you want to learn to design websites and you have the funds to purchase a package then I'd recommend everything and anything but Frontpage and Publisher.

The reasons why are because the code that it generates is not really that good, it's a lot longer than any other code you will see on a site and generally causes your site to be slower and have problems when people come to view it on different browsers.

If you are stuck using Frontpage then don't despair because you still can produce a good site, but I really do think better software (with a hefty price tag I know http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/mad.gif ) will produce you a great site.

The best packages dont have to be expensive, many of the best websites were written completly in notepad! I for one use nothing else.

hi there again...

thanks for that tip. i have thought about buying some software for building sites, because where i will buy te domain you can also buy some sotware with it at huge prices and small prices(for beginners mainly). do you think it's worth considering buying some of that???

i don't really know how it is suposed to work, buy i guess you somehow receive it when you buy the domain name!

anyways... thanks again for all the replies people. you lot are really being more than helpful!!

Hi

Before we get all carried away here, I'd just like to vocalise the voice of reason http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

1. Frontpage, if you're a beginner has a much gentler learnign curve than it's more expensive counterpart, Dreamwaever.

2. Dreamweaver is so damn expensive and for what it is likely to be used for is a somewhat disproportionate price tag.

3. My own website was designed with Frontpage, and as long as you don't just jump in and start formatting here clicking there, it won't generate any more code than is necessary. I really don't know where people get this idea that Frontpage is heavy with code, it's not the program, it's the user who doesn't know how to use the program.

4. Dreamweaver, although the ultimate in web software, is a bitch to learn and as we're only talking about a website for a small business, we're not likely to be using all it's admittedly outstanding features (right tool for the job and all that).

So, leaving Dreamweaver out of it for a moment, go to

http://www.mcwebsoftware.com

Their HTML Editor is called Webweaver2002 gold. Not only is it just right for building the kind of pages we're trying to do here, it's reasonably simple to pick up, and gives you a good grasp of HTML too.

The program has a 30 day trial so no need to worry about wasting money.

Rant over http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

You are quite right abour FrontPage, if you start having different fonts everywhere then you will get the heavy code.

If you use style sheets as Darren has done then you will get a good overall set of code.

I like the sound of the package he is recommending, I'm a Dreamweaver man myself but I use it every single day for my job so I should be!

Hi

Yup there's no doubt that Dreamweaver is the daddy of website tools, but only for the professionals or those with tons of money.

As for coding in notepag, fine if you know html, not fine if you're a total newbie.

I learned the hard way, all hand coded to start with, but the idea of doing forms, tables etc by hand is a thought i'd rather not contenplate.

Frontpage is one of the easiest programs to get to grips with, particularly if you're already familiar with word.

But, and it's a big but...make sure you use style sheets for setting fonts colours, sizes etc or the amount of code it will generate will be vast.

I think we're going round in circles now http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

so yeah ppl...

we are really going around in circles now, but it was more than helpful...

i will go and try and find the programs i will need for setting up my page and then i'll get started on it.

i wil post the finished result to all of you, so you can then have a look and maybe even pick up some mistake i will do, so i can make it look perfect.

by the way... i have got a small Mac laptop up in my room... does any1 know any programs for Mac on website building. I'll make a new topic on that tho...

fanks again ever1...
