ChrisPointon 0
How long have you been DJ'ing? 19 years What inspired you to become a DJ? Err, I suppose it was several 'inspirations' really. The main one being music. I love it. My old guitar teacher in the '70s used to run a 'discotheque' at weekends, my first introduction to the fabulous moving light screens, big speakers and 'oil wheel' projectors' got me interested in 'disco's'. Then, the Family 'get-together' was another inspiration - music and dancing for all, and I suppose getting lumbered with the hi-fi contributed to later decisions. After the club stints (part time) a DJ I met taught me how to really use the Technics! Plus, after watching a TV documentary on Malcolm McClaren also (partly) contributed to my inspiration to become a DJ, but it was friends and family who more or less convinced me (inspired). What type of "Do" was your first gig? A birthday party for a member of the family. Professionally, a sports presentation evening at a CIU club. A little music after all the trophy's were given out. How much did you charge (Mikeee please convert this from Shilings and pence to decimal when its your go..) The family party was free, my first club night I received £60, but the 'official' first mobile gig was £100.00 What equipment did you have to begin with? Ah haa! That's a good question. Unflightcased, 2x Technics 1210's, 2x 300W custom speakers (made by a disco shop), a Mosfett Amp, Tandy 4 chn Mixer (black with green stencil), couple of 'traffic light' chasers, a 'T' Bar with 4 Par cans and a sound to light 4 chn chaser. Because the gear was unflightcased, it made it a pain carrying items and trying not to damage the gear. On the first mobile gig, I damaged BOTH earth leads on the decks! Whats the worst/most embarassing thing you've done in front of an audience? Being sick - extremely. What is your favourite type of function now? EG: Wedding, 18th Birthday party, funeral wake.. Now I'm older, I'll have to go with the Wedding function, but years ago I would have said the 'Hen Night'. Is there anything that you include in your show now, that you wish you'd done/known when you started? (Not equipment, but in human/performer terms) I trust my instinct more now than when I did. I would panic and put 'any old track' on! What do you feel you offer your public, that makes you a better DJ than "the next guy/girl"? To younger DJ's, I suppose experience would be the edge factor. To older DJ's, my understanding and respect. Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadnt? and why? I once purchased a KAM mixer with a built in sampler, as I recall, on a Friday afternoon. I returned the following Monday to the high street retailer because it didn't work. Whats your next DJ purchase likely to be? I really need another radio mic. If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be? Holographic decks! What do you think is the best thing about DJ'ing. Being able to play music to entertain. What do you think is the worst thing about DJ'ing. The perception within the industry and outside! What would make you stop DJ'ing (if anything). If I lost my hearing. How do you think DJ'ing will change, in the next 5 years? New music formats breeds new equipment, and more of the same music you already have. Most stupid thing anyone's ever said to you at a gig? Wanna E? Best advice you were ever given by a fellow DJ? Never ever drink and drive and never believe everything you hear! And worst advice you were ever given Join our club and you will earn more money! Name 3 songs that 95% of the time will fill you dance floor!! Casper Slide Reach for the Stars New York, New York Age 34 Location Witham, Essex Martial status Loved up and happy ever after Education level O Level and GCSE Standard in many subjects Mode of transportation Escort 1.8 TD LX What equipment do you currently use? Pioneer Mixing System + EFX Yamaha Studio Amp QSC Amp RCF Speakers EV Speakers How much have you "invested" in equipment? Thousands and thousands of pounds over the years - it's unbelievable when you add it up. What was your reason for becoming a DJ? The overall excitement and reward of entertaining others is a good reason to be a DJ, but admitting to enjoying turning over 'X' amount of money in a short space of time is way too honest. Approximately how many gigs have you done to date Three years of Club gigs (minimum two nights per week), Mobiled well over 1000 since 1992, and many Karaoke's in the last 2 years
