Hello from Sunny Brighton!

Recommended Posts

Hi All :wavey:

I originally started as a mobile, mainly playing Jazzfunk & Soul around the South (occasionally mentioned in Blues & Soul mag) before later taking on more mainstream gigs to actually pay for the specialist imports I used to buy.

After a few years I got more and more in to club work, but recently decided to go back to mobiles. I was finding the club work stale, and missed the challenge and excitement of one off gigs.

I rely on word of mouth recommendations and don’t advertise. I also tend to charge a reasonable fee (although also do a few freebies each year) and which means that I end up with the occasional week off. It’s more of a hobby that pays for itself, although I still approach it with a professional attitude, and am still striving to be the best that I can. (One of the reasons I joined here.)

Here’s the science:

Main Console:

2x Pioneer CDJ500S CD Players

Pioneer DJM600 Mixer

Shure SM58 Mic on angle-pose stand

32 Band GEQ & Compressor/Limiter.

Amp Rack:

DBX Driverack 260 – Includes Graphic EQ, RTA, Crossover, Limiters, & loads of other stuff I never use! Can store settings for up to 50 venues internally and save more to a PC.

2x Peavey DPC1400x Amps – 700W RMS per channel.

Speakers:

4x Bose 802 Mk II

2x Martin Audio Subs

Lighing:

4x Abstract Revolutions

8x Pinspots

2x 100W White Twisters

1x Basic DMX controller

1x Smoke Machine (RF remote controlled)

3x T bars.

I normally only carry the above, but for the occasional very large venue/function (and when the fee justifies the additional set up time!) I also have loads of other older lighting including mirror balls, 12 more pinspots, 2 strobes, 3x 4 way PAR boxes, DMX scanning 100W searchlight, and even a rope light!

I also have all my own stands (got sick of wobbly tables back in the vinyl days) carry a back up mixer & CD player, have equipment PAT tested and have PLI.

I set all this up on my own in around 45-60mins, and have made a rule that any new purchases must not add to the set-up/load-in time. (As it is the one part of the job I don't enjoy!)

As well as club and mobile DJing, I’ve also dabbled in radio, record production and re-mixing (but all back in the 80’s and early 90’s).

I look forward to contributing as well as learning from you all. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/notworthy.gif

Hi Robbie,

Nice place Brighton, I’ve spent many a happy hour under the pier.

(Yes I did say under the pier) & under about 12metres of water to be precise.

You never know what you find under that pier, especially during the summer when it packed full of holidaymakers throwing all their money away.

Its like something from the generation game, Cash, credit cards, tools, tables, chairs, cups, plates, fishing rods, jewellery, watches (still working) and not forgetting the cuddly toy.

We have reunited many a http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/014.gif child with their new cuddly toy after its gone over the side, and to see their faces light up when they cuddle their wet Pooh or Tigger is a delight. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

One of the strangest things was to come up after a dive to find a small group of people all smartly dressed, tipping some asses over the side from a container.

So next time any of you are down on Brighton Pier drop a pound through the planks for the divers underneath. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif

Hmmm Brighton sounds one hell of a strange place. All that ass dropping sounds very worrying http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif .

Jackwabbit, you dirty bast http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/censored.gif - oh sorry, you mean diving! I’ll think of you next time I’m on the Place Pier. But don’t forget your hard helmet if you go diving under the West Pier.

Own a boat, I wish. We do a lot of eating, drinking and the purchasing of cheap clothes, although I do try to take the boat trip, as they do try to pull in a bit closer when they go past the nudist beach, must remember the bino's next time.

I also normally manage to blag a "VIP" pass for the London to Brighton car run. Em that must be coming up again soon.

Perhaps pop into Southern FM, still have a plastic dinosaur that I won on that late night prog., last bus to white thingermejig.

PS the only bit of sand at Brighton is up at Shoreham

And thats only when the tide is out. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

Brighton has some lovely sand either side of the pier, its just that most of you can't see it.

I HAVE! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

You lucky personage you. Do you know just how sore my feet get walking on those rocks they call pebbles. OK not as bad as south wales, they do have rocks, you need crampons to get to the beach (lol)
