Spam Email Prevention

Recommended Posts

I have been ignoring them for a long time & have never replied to any, unfortunately I have at least 3 e-mail address that collect over 100 Spam mails every night. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wallbash.gif

I’m sometimes tempted to forward all 300+ Spam-mails to each and every person who sends them out. Now if every one they send Spam-mail to, was to do the same thing, it would surly bring the WWW to a standstill & it would take them months to remove all the rubbish. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

HIDING FROM SPAMMERS

If you get a lot of unsolicited mail piling up in your in box, you may have become the victim of an email spider. These nasty programs spread across the Web, archiving email addresses listed on websites for future mail delivery. Just about every website has at least one contact address listed, so just about every website is vulnerable to this kind of hack.

There is a way you can prevent hackers from gathering your email address, since their spiders comb the source code of your site, and not the browser display. What we'll do is chop the components of an HREF Mailto Tag into separate source pieces using a simple Javascript. Consider this script:

Any Hassles let me know

<script language=javascript>
<!--
var showlink = "Contact Us";
var showname = "yourname";
var showhost = "yourhost.com";
document.write("<a href=" + "mail" + "to:" + showname + "@")
document.write(showhost +">" + showlink + "</a>")
//-->
</script>

Of course, you'll have to rewrite the variables to suit your needs. Notice how we also disguised the "@" symbol with its HTML Tag character counterpart (@). If you don't want to use JavaScript, you would probably be safe just to run with this: yourname & # 64; yourhost.com

the email address above is seen like >> yourname@yourhost.com

Have a look at http://www.mailwasher.net/. The trial version will only do one account, but if you buy it, you can specify multiple accounts.

It bounces mails back to the sender as though the address it was sent to does not exist.

I've tried it and it does work.

It just feels like it.

I've posted this on another thread, but it's worth repeating.

I use a program called Spam Inspector , it's free to try and costs around $19.95 (£13) to register the full version.

After a couple of weeks running in the background, its now finding and deleting 99% of the spam emails I receive (And I get a lot! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif ). It's also very reliable and only really catches junk mail rather than geniune emails, although it does sometimes regard emailed newsletters from forums and similar as spam, but i've never known it to ever confuse genuine emails from clients and people I know.

Other features include the ability to bounce emails back to the sender, and to report spam senders and their servers, to worldwide authorities and spam blacklists all at the click of a mouse. Also useful is the feature to manually block email addresses, great for anybody who you wish to ignore in the future.

I've used several spam blockers ranging from Norton and McAfee to lessor known products and I have found this to be the best and most effective, its also the cheapest http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif .

I get tons...... and none of them would actually be of any benefit to me... I dont want a bigger you know what cos I dont have one in the first place!

My problem is that I try to filter the obvious words, then the spammers alter the way they type em.. eg I filter Viagra... then they come back with v//i//a//g//r/a... might have to try something else... like the one you have suggested crispy!

I can vouch for the Spam Inspector that Crispy mentions. It's an excellent product and catches nearly all of the masses of junk mail I receive.

I find a lot of spam emails get addresses from online forums.

After signing up for any forum, I always find I start getting more spam mail.

I operate a strict NO SPAM policy on DJU. When you register, your Email address is stored in a encrypted database which is not viewable to non members, and Spam Harvesters. Most New members can't even use the forum P.M or Email facility for a period of time, in order to avoid people / intelligent spiders (!) signing up just to Spam the membership. Even when email facilities are enabled, each members is limited to a certain number of emails in a certain period, and logs are kept to prevent abuse of the system. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif .

The only people risking getting Spam from DJU are those openly posting their Email addresses on posts and in signatures http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/nono.gif .

I suggest that you use an indentifiable email address, which will enable you to see what email is directed from DJU. For instance DJU@yourdomain.com is often a good suggestion.

If you do get Spam, which you are 100% certain has come from here, then please forward me the email, complete with the original headers.

By the way, non members can only access around 20% of the forum, and can't read members' signatures so that is another protection against spam harvesting.

There are some mail harvesters out there that can read HTML codes and some read javascript.

The only way to not get spam is either not have an email address or just not post it in public places (ie the web). If you put it into a form script make sure it's actually in the code of the script, not in the form that sends the info to the script to be parsed, cos again you can parse the HTML source for something@something.tld.

I use SpamAssassin at home to stop my spam, runs on my mail server (linux) and processes all my mail as it comes in, I've got it set so it doesn't delete the spam, it just flags it as spam and lets my mail client filter it to a different directory.

If you are in charge of your own mailserver you should take a look at the realtime blacklists out there to use.. Also if you can you use .htaccess files (or any other way of denying access to your website) you can add known spam spiders ip addresses to the htaccess file and they won't be allowed to access your website..

Anyways, enough of my pointless ramblings. If you want any info on spamassassin or what not, pm me..
