Bollywood; anyone familiar with it?

Recommended Posts

A topic I just posted about a Bollywood gig got me thinking about Indian music. I have a few Bollywood CD's but am not exactly knowledgeable about Indian music. Is there anyone on here who does know which are the big tunes and which ones are big on the dancefloor?

I quite like the sound and would be interested to know which tunes usually work.

Eskie... I think that there are a few sites on the web where you can research what it popular.. I know that if you go to cdnow.com and search under "world music" then sub section, it will give you the most popular cds and their particular genre. It also gives you information as to "who is buying" and other information which you might find useful. I often use this site to research - and you can listen to samples too.

Another suggestion is to have a look at the Bollywood top ten films.... this might also give you an idea as to the most popular current bollywood tunes.

Hope this helps!

Kazz, appreciate the input; I have indeed looked at a couple of the top compilations (and indeed have some of them), but what I really wanna find out is first-hand knowledge from someone who plays this kind of stuff what are the tracks that really work on the dancefloor. As we all know from experience, sometimes the tracks included on compilations are no reflection as to what actually works on the dancefloor!

Surely somebody knows a dj that plays Bollywood style music or has knowledge of it?

I did an Indian wedding last year, they wanted 'a little' Indian music, they brought a CD along too, but the biggest hit of the evening was Punjabi MC's http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wacko.gif I also have an Indian music CD I use as background music sometimes and it is one of the best I have, really relaxing and un-offensive.

.....but what do I know ?

Sorry Eskie for the delay..

The links above are the right places to try first. The only things that you have to worry about with Indian Music is doing your research before your gig and play about this much time during the gig

20% Traditional

30% Film Music

50% Jumping Bhangra Music

Traditional Music

is music that are old bhangra classics not too jumpy bit kindy like 70/80s bhangra tunes that will get the oldies going, The cd you want to look is called - Essential Bhangra, I have another one which is ideal at home but I cannot remember it at the mo but I'll post up when I can. It doesn't have the heavy samples of music you hear at the mo but a bit more traditional sounds that will appeal to asians

Film Music.

Indian people luve watching lots of indian films whenever they hear a song from a favourite film, almost everyone will isntantly start tapping their feet. look for a tune called Sona Sona and listen to that to understand its rthym, also look here:

http://www.onlypunjab.com/music/hindi.html

http://ww.smashits.com/index.cfm

Jumping Bhangra Music

There are lot of Indian DJs Producers who team up woith popular artists to remix their tracks e.g

Rishi Rich (teams up before with puff daddy, mary j blige, sting, craig david)

Bally Sagoo (teams up with michael jackson and many others, BS has appeared on TOTP before) and these guys really have either cool or thumbing beats. If you walk up and down asian populated places like Southall, Wembley then you always will hear heavy bassline tunes from these artsist from peoples cars

http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/4786/april.html

www.apnamp3.com is a great place to hear some new songs and remixes and if you like them, go buy the CD

Here is a really good link for songs that you'd play throughout a wedding ceremony

http://www.yourdreamshaadi.co.uk/Articles/...ddingSongs3.htm

Hope the above helps and good luck, in fact if you are good enough you will occasionally get tipped (a lot) I've heard from Indian DJs, it cost the parents £600 to hire him but people tipped the DJ for playing certain songs that made them get up and dance and he ended up walking away with an extra £200

Fantastic http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif

Cheers Pareshj, the info is very much appreciated and I'm sure that it'll come in useful in the future. I live very close to Wembley and have done functions where some Asians have been in attendance. Upto now I have played stuff like Panjabi MC (I know it's 8 years old on the Asian scene, but still... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/533.gif ), and a couple of tracks that I've liked the sound of from some Indian CD's I bought.

It's always useful to have another string to your bow http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Thanks again Pareshj http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/notworthy.gif

  • 1 year later...

I was chatting with Mikeee earlier who is looking for some Indian music for an upcoming wedding; more traditional & bollywood is what he's after.

The Essential Bhangra cd that Pareshj recommends above has proved very difficult to find. Anyone know where to get it? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif

I thought I'd revive this thread in case we have any other Indian/Asian DJs on here who might be able to add to Pareshj's excellent recommendations above?

Anyone else know of any good Bollywood and tradtional Indian CDs?

I have trawled around the sites mentioned above and there are a lot of tracks recommended but nothing in the way of compilation albums. I've sent emails to just about every site mentioned above and will now wait and see what responses I receive. Mikeee is obviously also looking so between the two of us we'll hopefully be able to come up with a useful list of dancefloorfillers for Indian music.

Play Punjabi MC - Mundain To The Bach (its something spelt like that) at any rnb night and people go crazy, its a tune. Also have a cool knightrider sample in it. There are some good albums out in hmv etc that cover these tunes.

Thanks for reviving this one Tone.

I have an Indian wedding, they want Bollywood, Punjab and Bhangra. Their description was "classic" songs, I take that as being their equivilant of our cheese (Rock N Roll, Chubby Checker, Abba, Wham). The B&G are in their 40's, so relatives will be somewhat older, so like a 40th or 50th birthday with lots of the oldies tunes.

It's funny you should say that Steve, I've been trying to get hold of Tony Patti their Programme Control. Actually, I thought I saw him on TV the other night in a trailer for a programme on the new More 4.
