Ian, that sounds like just my kind of gig. I was mainly a Jazz Funk and Soul DJ back in the early 80's and still love it! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

My gigs are normally quite uneventful and not worth reporting, but I had an interesting one on Saturday.

It was a wedding reception for a member of a well known band. (A real band – not a pop act.) I was set up at 5pm, but music wasn’t to start until 10pm. They had asked for no cheesy or pop music. Requests, most popular music, and most of what I ended up playing was along the lines of the Stones, Hendrix, Dylan, early Bowie, T-Rex, Iggy Pop, etc.. Certainly very different to the average wedding reception!

It’s at times like this that you realise why you carry such a wide range of music, when 99% of functions you only use the same 10% of your collection. In the vinyl days I would have had some of that type of music, but not enough to do a whole night. Thank God for the COMPACT Disc!

After taking the first 4 songs to musically "find my feet" (you would be surprised what didn’t work) I had a packed dance floor for the rest of the night, and they paid for extra time – eventually ending at 3.30am!

Should be a great night, Its the first time I shall be 'experimenting' with my new mp3 system. (fingers crossed it will work ok) although its only got onboard sound at the moment http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif I think I may have to buy a good sound card http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif but I will try it out first.

It was a great night. Even though we didnt get the disco started (only background music) 'till 9 (started 7:30), I had them all up as by the first song http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Its the first time I used my new mp3 system. And It woirked a treat. I dont even think that I'll need to buy a sound card.

Ugh, Saturday night was a suprise 50th party (helping out a mate who couldn't do it). I was told to get there early (5:30 for a 7:30 kick off - wanted me in before people in the bar downstairs were around). Had to lug my gear from one end of the club, up the worlds smallest stair case and then back across to setup on the worlds most rickety stage. Got all the way there and found I'd left 2 of my cd cases at home.. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/stupid.gif

No one arrived till just after 7, so I had to sit for an hour on me todd. Wasn't allowed to use the bar downstairs (sorry, it's members only).. so started off with some background music . Guest arrived late around 8:30 disco kicked off then, it was horrendous. Tried everything to get them dancing, new stuff, old stuff, cheesy stuff etc. Think from the 60 or so guests the most I had was 10 on the floor. Music was too loud (don't sit next to the speakers), so turn it down a bit then it was too quiet for the people on the other side of the room..

About 10:30 played some slowies, followed by DJ Sammys Heaven (candlelight mix into radio edit) and the floor went mad, which was nice seeing as I had the power cut bang on 11pm.. Had a dodgy mic all night and to top it off I was getting ready to leave when some drunk lass (who'd been annoying me all night (when she got up on the stage, she made my decks jump - hah)) decided that it'd be a great idea to show off how good a dancer she was (dunno what she was dancing to - no music, no lights, no atmosphere) and promptly fell over, took one of my speakers with her (onto some of my lights) and put her knee through the cone.. Hoorah..

Went home, got into bed and cried myself to sleep. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/014.gif

Last time I do my mate a favour..

Okay, Andy has sent me a short video and some very blurry, out of focus photographs. So out of focus that you can hardly see the sheep at all http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/tongue.gif .

First of all, here is the Lightshow Video. (Right click on the link and select "save as")

MY FIRST VIDEO

I'll also put the photo's into the photocall section, later tonight, when i've finished reducing them from their present billboard size - not everybody views the forum with a 42" Plasma TV!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif .

Just found out today that radio1 DJ Jo Wyley is likely to be their, oh my god, don't you just hate it when other DJ's are around? Hope she doesn't ask to try out the decks

Jo's a daytime Radio 1 DJ. She doesn't use the decks for her show, I think she uses the minidisks or computers.

...but she does use decks when she goes spinning at various clubs up and down the country - usually at night! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/533.gif
