I have been using a Pair of Stageline Speakers for the last year. They didnt sound too bad and I was really impressed with them. I had to modify them though http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif . I have recently purchased a pair of the new Peavey pro-15! They sound real good! At 500watts a side 1000watts peak, option of 4ohms or 8ohms, and the size of them! They fit easily into my car. Also the price is real good from [Edited], style and colours look good too. do the job well and impressed !!! Also check out the Ul-15, rated at 1000watts a side, 2000watts peak.

Hi,

DId you have any problem with the Top-hats.

Just bought myself a pair of Peavey Pro-15s yesterday before a gig - stuck them on the tripod, and with a clatter and a bang the tripod shot straight up into the speaker, taking the inside of the top hat with it. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/mad.gif

Fortunately, no damage done internally - I HOPE... worked ok for the night, but will be taking them back to the supplier.

Any other comments on the peaveys would be appreciated before I retunr them tomorrow as am now very concerned - am told the build quality is supposed to be the best - not the top hats though - obviously...

Also, whilst am on, am having terrible trouble finding a simple explanation for the meaning of Program, RMS and Peak. WIll check the postings on here to see if I am missing it, but if anyone could elaborate in laymens terms, I would really appreciate it.

My amp will apparently do 1000w RMS at 4 ohms. The Peavey speakers say they will handle 500w program either side, but when I look at the Peavey website, it says 250w RMS, 500w Program and 1000w Peak..

Am sort of lost on what I should be looking for.

Hope someone can help.

Cheers

Simon

Hi!

The Peavey Pro-15s have always worked ok for me, had them few months now. Have never used the Top Hats on them, I find that from them speakers I get better sound from them if they are put straight onto the floor. Chris has put some real helpful information about the amp ratings. I feel really let down after reading Chris' info. I was told when i brought the amp and speakers that they were 500watts with the amp rating the same. But as pointed out by Chris you only look at the Watts RMS, which is only 250watts, so really I have not upgraded in power from my stageline speakers but down graded. Peavey pretty good and get 5 years guarantee on them. So Take em back!!

Am I the only one worried that someone picked up some speakers just before a gig, http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif I alway test my equipment before I let it loose on the public, in fact I have had some speakers and amps for the last week or so and I haven't even seen them yet as I have a mate who will test them for me for a while. What would have happened if the top hat went through the cone or caused internal damage, did you have back up ?, I can now say I carry beck up of everthing including speakers and amps

.....but what do I know ?

Yes, it is always very important to find out the true RMS rating of any Audio Equipment before committing to a sale. More importantly, check the RMS rating of Speakers if you intend to connect them to an Existing high power amplifier.

A lot of manufacturers are guilty of overselling speakers on their Program or even peak ratings. The industry standard for measuring the continuous rating of a speaker is RMS, and this is the 1st figure that you should look at when comparing values.

The American manufacturers are more guilty of pushing Speakers on their Program Ratings, so you should look very closely at the spec on the website before buying. Big and Heavy, does not automatically mean high RMS Values!.

Another giveaway, is price. Contrary to Ebay , it is NOT possible to buy brand new 600W (RMS) Speakers for £160 a pair http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif . These are in fact 200W RMS speakers being oversold on their peak ratings, which, although not illegal if you simply state "600W Speakers", it is still very misleading. Should you have connected these to a 600W RMS amp, then you would have been speaker shopping again!.

Hi,

Thanks for all the help and feedback - it is really useful. Made it clearer in my mind about all the power ratings etc.. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Have been on the phone to Peavey this morning who were extremely helpful. GOing to take them back tonight and get sorted one way or the other. However a little worried that the top hats may just get changed - the clatter and bang that occurred when the tripod shot into the speaker, does not fill me with confidence for their long-term future. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif

Fair point - but you are most defintitely not the only one who checks their gear - Am paranoid at the best of times and I do test everything before I take it out - which I hasten to add I did with these speakers before even considering setting off to the gig (Even though it was only down the road).... However one assumes that the actual fabrication of the speaker is not going to let me down, especially considering the implied build quality. I could end up going to the nth degree examining every screw and nail. Looking at the second speaker, the top that looks somewhat dodgy on that as well..

As far as backup, I have a full second kit on hand - speakers, amp, mixer etc..

Anyway, point taken - I will be a bit more careful in future. Top hat will be the first thing I check. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif

Will let you know how I get on anyway.

Cheers

Were the top hats metal or plastic? The top hats on my Peavey Hi-Sys full-range and bass cabs are metal and seem quite thick and strong - although, this visual inspection would mean very little if there was a manufacturing problem with the top hats.

Hmmm, I wonder if Peavey have put some cheaper components into their bottom of the range gear. Are Peavey paying for the pick-up of the items for repair?

I hope Peavey have a good answer as to why the top hat failed.

Keep us posted.

It's not unheard of for manufacturers to identify issues and problems with their products and update them on later models. It may be that Peavey identified the weak spot on their speakers and updated the top hats on newer models.

The difference between 250watts rms and 500watts RMS is only an increase of 1/10th in loudness. So its bearly noticeable and i would worry too much about it.

I think everyones get the best idea carrying spares of everything. I am a guilty person who doesnt carry spares http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif , but I have only got small transport vehicle. Learnt my lesson the other week when all the bulbs blew in my lights, and people had to dance in the dark! However always test the sound system day before.

They were of the metal type. The cylinder inside at split away from the larger "washer" shaped part at the bottom. Looking at the second one the seam on their also seemed pretty rubbish and may split at any point. I have to say that even the good one leant on top of the tripod like you wouldn't beleive.

Anyway, took them back to the supplier last week and exchanged them. They did not have any more Peavey's in stock, but got a pair of Opus speakers - of which i cannot find any info on the web.

THey appear to be made by a company in Burnley, but can't really tell whether this is absolutely correct or not. Am starting to worry a bit about them as can find no reviews etc. They are model T15-400. Anyway, the dealer did say if I wasn't happy I could take them back.

Anyway, any info - good or bad would really be appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Cheers

People won 't minding dancing in the dark, it when your amp/speakers fail and they would have to dance to silence. GET SOME BACKUP, even if it is jusy a 100PA Amp at least you could carry on the night and not ruin the function, if you don't get back up get a hugh PLI cover as if it happened at someone wedding you could be opening a letter from No Claim, No Fee solicitors by Tuesday morning

.....but what do I know ?

They are custom made speakers - the outlet just puts their own name on them. A bit like me making my own speakers and selling them as "CSL series". You won't find reviews on them, because they are only sold through the shop who makes them, and a couple of distributors and hence not very well known.

They use Eminence Drivers so they aren't that bad, but then they are nothing special either and certainly not in the same league as the Peaveys. You could have got the same thing for far less money, but if you are happy with the sound, then thats all that matters.

Andy is right. ALWAYS carry back up for the sound gear.

Even if you test the system the day before, something could fail on the night.

In my first year of DJing some drunk http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/censored.gif was slopping their drink all around whilst trying to make a request. Half their pint went all over my mixer and the turntables. A few mins later the mixer started cutting out! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif

I had never heard of carrying back up. I learnt the hard way, and for the twenty odd years since have always carried back up. Don't make the same mistake I did!

If you don't have much space the MINIMUM you should carry is a walkman CD player (with spare batteries and mini jack to phono adaptor cable), a little two channel mixer and a small amp. (You could get by on one speaker.) Together they would take up less space than a CD case.

Here's a tip I think a few would or might consider doing on the top hat issue.

Drill a hole through the tube roughly about 4 to 6mm, you can then use 'R' clips

to insre that said pole doen'st make its way into your loved cabinets, I've done this

to my inlaws 'karaoke' system for him and gives piece of mind

I too have had the top hats break... they are ot made from steel, they are some alloy, But the hole is a standard size, and you can just replace them with some decent steel ones... How ever, the Peavey bass cabinets have a hole and some locking post at the bottom, the speaker pole goes right through the sub into the base of the cab... i havent broken one of these yet !!!

We have the UL-15 and are a fantastic sound even if used without subs, ours are rated at 8ohms.

Tha Peavey pro range despite there name are actually the lower end with the UL being mid/high end.

When we went to buy them we tested 3 different models the ULs were far superior.
