Since we've just passed the 1800 members mark, I thought i'd bring back the DJU Interviews, and hopefully get a few new members interested in taking part (hint!). If you do want to be interviewed, send me a P.M and i'll return the questions to you.

Interview with Tony J

How long have you been DJ'ing?

Did my first gig aged 11 at the local youth club,First professional gig was when I was 21, oh my over 25 years carrying gear.

What inspired you to become a DJ?

Just always wanted to do it. Proberbly inspired by Radio 1, back when it was good, they use to have personalities on the radio in those days. I meet Tony Blacburn at a roadshow and got 9/10 on Bits and Pieces… came 2nd, I put Billy Ocean instead of George Benson.

What type of "Do" was your first gig?

First pro gig was a Wedding In Fleetwood, big do about 50 people.

How much did you charge (Mikeee please convert this from Shilings and pence to decimal when its your go..)

I worked for a Disco company, I got £25 a gig as a trainee.

What equipment did you have to begin with?

The first gear I owned was a Powered Macgregor Twin Deck 200watt mono, Spot Light Box, Lightscreen, Ropelight, 4 Head Helicopter and a pair of shop build 150 watt 12 inch Celestion Speakers.

Whats the worst/most embarassing thing you've done in front of an audience?

When I was still new I asked for the Brides parents to come on the dance floor.. Yep your right they had past away in the last few months. Always checked these details in advance every since.

What is your favourite type of function now? EG: Wedding, 18th Birthday party, funeral wake..

I like weddings and kids parties. The kids do’s are great, good money for a short period and you can have fun with them.

Is there anything that you include in your show now, that you wish you'd done/known when you started? (Not equipment, but in human/performer terms)

Just more confindence, don’t be scared of trying something different, and talk to the crowd before you start.

What do you feel you offer your public, that makes you a better DJ than "the next guy/girl"?

I listen to what the customer wants, even when they are clueless, its fun to guide them into what you normally do whilst making them feel its there idea.

Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadnt? and why?

Just over the years the number of records or cds you buy that are no use what so ever

Whats your next DJ purchase likely to be?

Lighting wise I after getting an abyss water effect and if I can talk the other half into it I after a couple of moving heads.

If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be?

A device for quickly unloading the car at 2.30 in the morning, on a cold wet windy December day.

What do you think is the best thing about DJ'ing.

Seeing people smile and having a good time.

What do you think is the worst thing about DJ'ing.

After the customer smiles and has a good time, they don’t thank the dj.

What would make you stop DJ'ing (if anything).

Only ill health, I have a partner who understands my passion for the job, she also understands the rewards and little extras the job brings.. holidays etc

How do you think DJ'ing will change, in the next 5 years?

The technology will make the physical job easier but I think we will have to become more entertaining

Most stupid thing anyone's ever said to you at a gig?

Do you do travel insurance????????????????????

Best advice you were ever given by a fellow DJ?

Keep Smiling, even when the dance floor clears

And worst advice you were ever given

Buy this record its going to be huge……………..

Name 3 songs that 95% of the time will fill you dance floor!!

Nice interview; I reckon most of us can draw some parallels with what Tony has said. For me, the two things that stand out the most from the interview are havng confidence and smiling when the floor clears. We've all been there, although I'm sure I've been there more times than most of you! (there goes my confidence again...)
