Glad to hear you all had good gigs.I covered for Tonsk at a wedding- and died on my a*se.

Mind you there werent that many at the wedding, about 20.If there were 50 by the end of the night that was top wack.

It was in marque at a pub by the river and they spent more time in the pub or outside.

Even though their playlist was small they didnt get up for any of them in fact I dont think they heard any of them.

It really was a c:cense:p night.

I think I will give last weeks gig (a nudist camp) a ring;that was more fun than a wedding http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/whistling.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif

This is not a rehearsal

This is it - grab it while you can.

Did Zoe come already inflated?, or did part of the 7 minutes include blowing her up? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/flirt.gif

My Saturday night gig was a Wedding Reception, well a reception for their friends in the UK since the couple actually got married in Florida a month ago, so this was basically a re-run for those unable to attend the ceremony over there.

I really hate working gig's where I know people, and I knew both the Bride and Groom and 90% of the Guests there - so having to run the gauntlet with the good natured P*ss taking and those who thought that I had plenty of time for a chat whilst doing the gig http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wacko.gif .

Also the Playlist.......well if I had suggested to the Bride and Groom to put 200 tracks that were LEAST likely to get their guests on the dancefloor then this would have been THE playlist. It really was hellish, with a mixture of smoochie tracks and stuff which is virtually impossible for anybody to dance to. Great for listening to in the car, but not much good for filling dancefloors.

After about an hour they realised that I was right when I had advised that nobody would dance to their suggestions, and told me that I could play what I wanted. Sadly by then most people had wondered off, but as soon as Cheese made an appearance the dancefloor was full. Just a shame it wasn't an hour earlier...Why do people NEVER listen to advice http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wallbash.gif .

So, an average Wedding then which could have been a little better if I had just been left alone to get on with it, without a blow by blow playlist. I had been dreading this gig all week, so glad that it's over and done with.

Hi

Trev, not a lot you can do with a totally disintersted bunch.

Last nights gig was erm...different.

We initially didn't think we'd have enough room to set up, yup it was that small a venue. Eventually after a bit of furniture removals and lots of cooperation from venue staff, we set up and from the word go we all had a brill night.

about 30 to 40 guests all in the mood for a good one, and boy did we have a good one.

Complete with limbo dancing comtest and going for a second Brittish gold medal in rowing to "oops upside your head" had the audience in stitches trying to keep up with my directions.

Have to start preparing for next week's Wedding now, 10 hours, and also acting as toastmaster, wish I'd charged more than £400 now http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sad.gif

Same place New Years Eve 1982 packed club (500 capacity) and got the first person on the floor at 04.45 a.m. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wallbash.gif

Fri nights wedding was a DJs dream gig. They had a couple of friends who sing http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/scared.gif to do the 1st hour (nice warm up) and then it was over to me. I spoke to the bride a few days before the function and asked what type of music she wanted 'Just Floorfillers and I'll leave the choices to you' she replied http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

So I had a crowd of about 200 who really wanted to party and we had a ball, I could've played Postman Pat and they would've danced (and sang) to it (I didn't though). At 12.20 the DM asked me to call last orders which I thought was a bit early as we didn't finish until 1.00 but soon understood his reasoning behind this as they were still queing for drinks at 12.45.

The access to the venue was easy (& level), the staff were friendly and helpful and the guests were merry & polite. This was definately my best wedding gig this year http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif if I don't get a few enquiries from this one I'll eat my cowboy hat. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/scared.gif

Onto Sat and I expected this to be a quiet night with only 70 expected but again the crowd were up for a good night and towards the end the 50 or so that were left were all on the dance floor - yep not one bum on a seat. Requests for the likes of The Who and Guns n Roses made a nice change and went down well.

It's weekends like this that make the job such a pleasure and eradicate the memories of bad gigs gone by and help to sustain me during the next few that might not be so good http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wacko.gif

Friday:

Dave & myself were invited out to St Ives with Dan & Julia (Disco Direct), we had a good night and Dave enjoyed playing with Dan’s equipment. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Everyone looked as if they enjoyed themselves especially the woman who was scratching her back up against Dan’s laptop, http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wacko.gif she was doing a good impression of Baloo from Jungle Book.

As Dan had predicted the place started to empty out just before 11:30 when everyone left to go on to another venue, they have to be in the other place before 11:30 or they can’t get in but they finish a lot later.

By 12:30 there was only the staff & ourselves left in there so Dan started to sing a few songs, his version of Celine Dion’s think twice has to be heard to be believed. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif

We finally left Dan & Julia there at 1:30am & were home by 3am. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thanks.gif

Saturday:

Wedding at the Bull Inn Maidstone, as they arrived we had music playing quietly when one woman came up and said can you turn it down to about half that level we have some old people who are hard of hearing. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/533.gif

It started to look as this was going to be a long night but as soon as the speeches and buffet was over by 7pm they all started to get in the party mood. There was one elderly gentleman who came in with a walking stick, dancing to almost anything swinging his stick around his head. Everyone had a good time & at 11pm they didn’t want to stop, but the manager had said it must stop at 11pm on the dot, he had had a visit from the environmental health saying they had received a complaint about music going on long after time, so they would be checking up. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbdown.gif

While packing the equipment up I managed to catch my trousers on the edge of the stand causing my zip to break, http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/oops.gif with all the hall lights now on I had to think of something quick to cover my embarrassment. Luckily my shirt is fairly long and by pulling it out it covered the gaping gap, I don’t think anyone noticed but there was a lot of smiles while people were saying how much they enjoyed themselves.

Note for the next gig, put some safety pins in the spare parts case.

As we were leaving at 11:45 we could hear loud music coming from somewhere else, it wasn’t from the pub but I bet they’ll get the blame for it. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif

Friday: Got up at 5am, went to work, came home, loaded up, drove to local wedding in 5star hotel, got home at 3am http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sleep1.gif That's a 22 hour day - ouch. The wedding was for a French man and his Scottish wife hence the request to finish on auld lang syne. The band were a brilliant 7 piece outfit playing classic soul http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/notworthy.gif . Played the usual stuff plus some french, RAI, etc.. most enjoyable.

Saturday: tried to stay awake, then did a wedding for a very tall couple, english man married to a Croatian lady in a 900 year old very exclusive castle near Bognor. Beautiful setting, the peacocks bricked it when the fireworks came on at 11:30. Played cheese, r&b, house, etc... and a few Croatian tunes - hmmm... Another great night. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Sunday: Goring beach with Mrs Mole & the kids....

Monday: back to work http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sad.gif

I did a 21st at a nice golf club (if there is such a thing). Went okay, I was below par (excuse the pun) for some reason, so not terribly satisfied with myself.

However, I reckon I had the party-goer of the week! She stood about 6 feet tall, not including her 4" stilleto's, and had bleached blonde hair that was short and spikey. Her all in one dress would have trouble fitting someone a foot smaller, but she had a fabulous figure to fill it.

Not only that but she danced nearly all night, and boy could she dance - those thigh muscles were on display for all to see! She was a natural show off but she was not a big head - cheesy tunes were her favourite.

A cross between Grace Jones and Yazz I'd say.

Finally, I'd like to thank Kim, whose 21st it was, for kissing me - TWICE !! The first time upon her arrival whilst I was still in my 'roadie' attire all hot and sweaty. The second after I had packed all the gear away and was hot and sweaty standing in the clothes I'd worked in for the previous five hours! Then she gave me three pieces of birthday cake, an embarassingly long hug, and Dad gave me a £10 tip as well as a lift with everything to the van!!!

If the mrs is reading this - the kisses were pecks on the cheek.

Another mixed bag of functions for me this week:

Thursday - Wedding: I wasn't looking forward to this as the bride's family are well known for being snotty-nosed gits.

This is the wedding where I was asked to play:

The Gay Gordons

St Bernards Waltz

Other waltzes

Other Ceilidh music

I wouldn't have minded playing this stuff, in the past many of the old-timers appreciate this stuff, as they don't usually get it with the local village idiot with his/her double-decks!

However, nobody at all was interested in this music and it was alienating the crowd as they thought I was taking the mick by playing it. It didn't matter how many times I explained that the bride and groom had specifically requested this music - although I hear it was the bride's parents that wanted this style of music.

They had stipulated the amount of this music they wanted but complained to me when nobody was interested. I told them I was dropping out of that music because it was not working.

As soon as I did drop out of this music the floor slowly filled up - I think people were still protesting about having to sit through the old-time music by keeping their bums on their seats.

Finally got them up and going, but it was hard work.

Friday - Wedding: What a brilliant night!

Had a chat with the bride and groom about how they wanted to plan the night and what they wanted for their first dance, etc. The bride seemed extremely happy to see me... this confused me a little until I found out why.

I asked them what styles of music they were into and she said: "Just play the stuff that you played last year when we were here. We had a brilliant night and we just want you to do the same."

I enquired as to when they last saw me. It was in July last year... this knocked me back a little as I only took over the residency this year, but I did do some cover work in 2003. In fact, looking through the request notepad (I keep them all, with the names and dates of the functions) I noticed that I only did one date in July 2003 there... she was lucky to have got me on that night http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The Fuctions Manager was a little upset when the bride said: "We decided to come here because we knew you'd be the DJ."

There was no mention of the facilities, the assistance from the Functions Manager, etc., etc. She picked the venue with the main emphasis being on having a good party! I honestly think that the Functions Manager thinks that all DJs are a necessary evil, if he could get away with a jukebox of somekind, he'd go for that... as long as he is in control. With a DJ though, he's not in control of the music.

Saying that though, we generally get on and he hardly ever interferes with my duties.

Saturday - Wedding: After sitting in the bar for all 1hr 28mins of the speeches, I was ready to fall asleep http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The length of the speeches knocked everything back and as such the first dance was at 9.15pm. The bride and groom wanted the first song exclusively for themselves. The second song they wanted their 1yr old son to be brought onto the dancefloor. They then wanted the friends and family to join them mid-way through this song. They then wanted a third song.

Each of these songs were about five minutes long, so this took the time to 9.30pm.

I played a few songs from the charts and then it was time for the buffet - 9.45pm.

The groom had told me he was a soul-DJ and that he wanted a selection of his favourites. His choices weren't bad if you were sitting at home listening to some mellow music, but not really the kind of stuff you'd have at a disco. I played most of these songs during the buffet.

When I kicked the party off the crowd was very difficult to get going. An American woman came over and she was telling me that she didn't know why people weren't getting up to have a party because the music I was playing was excellent (her words... I'm not just making this bit up!). She requested a few songs and I said I'd play them in the next few minutes. She said that would be fine, as she was on a mission to get people up dancing and would need some time to round people up.

Giver her some credit, she did make a difference. Once a few people were on the floor it picked up. People are usually afraid to go on a dancefloor if they are the only people there. Once you break down that barrier, people are generally more confident to join in.

From then on, those that were up for a good night were on the dancefloor.

At the end of the night the American lady thanked me for a good night and said that the music selections I'd played had put shame to some of the American DJs she'd seen in action. She said it was a refreshing change to see a British DJ and she really wondered why people were so reserved about having a good night.

Despite it being a difficult night for me, I went home with a smile on my face because the American was so complimentary.

The groom came over and thanked me for the night. He asked how I thought it had gone and I was truthful... I thought it was a quiet night. He said:" Don't worry. I was listening in and I could tell you were going through the different styles to try and get people up dancing. It's not your fault my guests weren't really up for it."

Sunday - Wedding: Quite a good night. Although I was getting sick of some of the requestees... nothing wrong with taking requests... I always try to give them the opportunity! However, it was the age-old: "We're going in a minute... can you play it next."

This is when their request is totally out of sync with the style you are already playing and have people on the floor dancing to it!

Being honest, if I did play it next it would have killed the dancefloor.

Some of the people did leave early, booking mini-buses for 11.30pm... when the function finishes at midnight. Then they have the nerve to come up to me and say:" We didn't know it was going to be such a good night. That's why we booked the lift home at XX.XXpm."

Hey... that's not my fault though http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Apart from that the night went smoothly and I enjoyed the night and I'm sure that those that hadn't booked lifts home before the end also enjoyed themselves.

A quiet week for me next... only Friday and Saturday on the cards!

Friday was a retirement party which went very well.

Saturday was "The Captains Dinner" at one of my golf clubs. I had to do the PA for a ten piece soul Band who were excellent. They keyboard player was one of Westlifes and the Sax guy plays for Will Young. Very Professional, albeit a bit demanding on monitoring! ( i put 4 monitors on stage @ 1.4Kw and that was loud on a 10 foot by 20 foot stage!)

During the warm up & meal theey had a "Faulty Towers" tribute act messing around through drinks and the meal. Interesting though not overly funnny.

I think I've worked with this act too.

Did it involve a very bad waiter who kept dropping things and generally being rude to people?

I worked a marquee event with something like this a few years ago and thought I was undercharging when I saw the bill for them for the night!

It was a company from The South Coast somewhere. The cast was: Fawlty,Sybil, Connie,Manuel and The General (?).

They finished with a weak flamenco lesson, which basically meant they all danced in a "Spanish" style. Nice enough people but a weak show. Paid well over a grand for their efforts!

On Friday I did a 13th Birthday party at our local village hall. I don't usually do kids partys on a weekend but the parents keeped nagging me last year so I gave in and agreed. When I was setting up I ask the birthday girl how many guests she thought would be coming, she replied "I don't know but I have given out 80 invites so I think there could be around 60-70." The party started at 7.30pm and by 8.00pm the total number of guest was 12 http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wallbash.gif I felt sorry for the Birthday Girl and her family, infact there was more Grandparents, Aunties and Uncles then friends. The party ended at 10.00pm that was the longest Two and a Half hours I have ever done!

Saturday I did a Wedding at Willerby Manor Hotel near Hull. Its was in a large ballroom which would easily hold 350, when I spoke to the bride before the wedding she said that there would be around 180 guests coming. She said that with the invites she had included a request slip and she would send me the playlist. I received the playlist on the thursday before the Wedding, it contained 95 requests some really obscure stuff and the usuall cheese. Started the wedding at 7.30pm with background trying to get rid of as much of the playlist as possible. Bride and Groom didn't wan't to do a first dance so I just brought it up a bit around 9ish, had some elderly man come and tell me to turn it down a bit ( I wouldn't of minded but it was when I was playing low level background!) In total around 120 guest turned up which looked a bit lost but I managed to keep then on the floor once I had got off the dreaded playlist!

Well, this weekend I did Friday, Saturday and Sunday night all at the golf club marquee I am resident in....

Friday night was a wedding for an English man and a Mexican woman, with her mexican guests.... She told me what Latino tracks to play, which was fine, and they seemed to enjoy it...

Then she told me what English songs to play........................................................................................... And the crowd sat down...... Got them up again but they just werent interested.... All in all a carp night and I couldnt leave the stuff set up and it wasnt insured.... Bugger...

Saturday night the couple wanted me to set up at 7.45 for a 8.15 start... I got there at 7, getting the stuff ready to do a quick set up.. At 8.15 was allowed in the room (damn speeches!!!) and started setting up... Loads of people vacating the room so it could be turned round.. Bride was English, Groom was Lithuanian (sp)... Set the equipment up in 25 mins (WOW!!!) and people started coming back in...

Waited for them all to get back and was told that the half empty room was all I was gonna get...... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif Bride had given me a list of 90ish songs she wanted played and the night ended like that... Again not a good one by any stretch of the imagination....

Sunday, English bride, French groom (was a pattern emerging I thought?) and again not a great night... Was booked by the brides dad who said she was really into drum and bass and wanted some played.. Told him I didnt know that style of music and that he may want to get someone else, but as they wanted a mix as well agreed I would play some that the B&G wanted...

Playlist came back, had songs like Beverley Knight - Flavour Of The Old School, Blackstreet - You Blow My Mind..... Yep, the DnB was actually RnB.... Started with her request list.. (and again a room half full..) as she didnt want Abba etc.... Until she realised her requests were falling on deaf ears... Finally allowed to play what I wanted, a lot of dancing was had... But again another unfulfilling night.....

Monday, had a 10yr old b'day party which Hayd from here came to to help me out (first real one)..... They didnt show up..... And its the only gig this year I didnt have a contract for.................... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wallbash.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/bash.gif

So all in all, a very disappointing weekend which makes me wonder - is it me? Have I lost it? Hopefully next weekend will make it all worth while again...

Well, my Friday night wedding (mentioned above, with all the popular party tunes pre-requested) went well...although I had to do a little tweaking of the Equaliser eearly on to get the sound "right"... at the end of the night, I went to a switch off my crossover, only to find out that it was already off... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif

The requests for party tune songs kept coming all night, "forcing" me into costume change after another, prop after prop...and the good news was that I was able to do my Blues Brothers bit without hurting/popping/dislocating my knee...which is always a bonus...the only time I remember seeing the actual wood of the dancefloor was when they started a conga line out of the room...

Moving onto Saturday and Sunday, and going a bit of topic...my wife & I went away to celebrate our 10th anniversary with nice meals, romantic atmospheres and "relaxing".

We stayed at a small hotel on a private island on the Thames. It had weddings on, on both Saturday & Sunday, and boy, did I feel sorry for both the DJs.

Access to the island is via a 90ft long, 2.5ft wide footbridge, which spans between the carpark and the hotel gardens. Once you've got over the footbridge into the gardens, theres an equally long gravel (no trolley then) path...

Overall, a great weekend.

Yes! Monkey Island it was.

Were you the DJ either night?

No, but I worked there last year - what a nightmare!

Stupidly, when I took the booking I didn't check out the venue and the bride didn't mention anything about access to the venue.

When I got there I thought there must be another way onto the island. Wrong http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sad.gif

Also, there was a 'jobsworth' porter there who wouldn't let me reverse upto the bridge and starting banging on about health and safety etc. Eventually I got a bit peeved with him and phoned the Hotel and got them to send the manager over, who was as nice as pie and let me reverse up to the bridge.

Give them their dues, they got me a big porters trolley and 2 of them gave me a hand.

The wedding over ran by an hour, and then the bride started getting arsey with me because I wasn't ready. Grrr http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/nono.gif

It was until 1am, and as per usual no-one was there to gave me a hand out with the stuff. I always work on my own and am fairly used to this, but not when you've got to go that distance http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbdown.gif

Anyway, it took me about 90 mins to pack away when it normally takes me about 40mins!

I spoke to the guys who do regular bookings there and they keep their gear in a store cupboard in the Hotel, so they don't have to bring it back and forth.

Valueble lesson learned here: Always check out access to venues before you go!

This is a whole new subject really.

When I talk to prospective customers who are calling for a quote, I always enquire about access and egress for the DJ, which is a complete waste of time. So, I give them a 'ball-park' figure stating that I will have to check with the venue management before I can commit.

The customer is not keen, and I have definitely lost business because of it, but there is nothing worse than turning up and being shown the staircase or a long walk through narrow corridors.

I charge double for venue's or gig's I don't want to play! If they book me - more fool them!!
