Hi there,

Just bought a whole load of stuff to set up on my own doing small Disco's & Karaoke in my spare time (I am a teacher and have 19 weeks hols!). I have most of the sound side of things and I am trying to get to grips with what lights I should be getting - What a mine field! I have got two 'gigs' booked. One in December a teen karaoke/disco party and my sisters 30th in Feb, so need to get some practise in soon.

I like most types of music except Jazz, drum 'n bass and Thrash metal.

Are there any other female DJ's out there ? (not that I would call myself a DJ just yet)

Hi and Welcome to the Forum http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif ,

Two of our Moderators are also Female Dj's, namely Paula and Karen (Forum Alias Kazzachi) and i'm sure you'll spot their posts as you browse around the forum.

Hope you'll find the information here useful http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif . Feel free to ask any questions.

Welcome to the forum Leonna http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/042.gif

You're a little outnumbered by the lads here in terms of sheer number of guys on the forum, however, our members "Paula" and "Kazza" more than make up for mere "numbers" by their combined ability to Shop'n'spend inbetween disco's http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif Their mission statement is "Shop until everyone else around you drops". http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

For the types of party that you mentioned - you wont need all those DJ "skills" that you see DJ's winning battles and competitions with. Really, you just need to know how to fade one song into the next. So just basic learning how to work the equipment (in a loud, darkened room, with people breathing alcohol over you - and thats just the teenage disco in Dec... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/pepsi.gif )

As for lighting. Theres several different roads to go down. In the short term, eg: for the two gigs mentioned - you might even want to consider renting some lighting gear - different types for each gig. The teens will love strobes and smoke, the 30th guests will probably prefer no strobes and no smoke; providing their own substitues for these effects using their latest arsenal of Anti-red eye digitial camera flashes and a packet of Benson & Hedges.

Are there any lighting effects which have already "caught your eye"?

hi i'm new to th site aswell ok a couple of day's old but still. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

so yeah about these gig's. for light's i would strongly advise not to buy strobes cause my friend went out to a disco and used a strobe. only trouble is 1 of th audience was epileptic and had a fit because of it. dull i know but true. mind u th dj is a bit well i'll put it like this http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/stupid.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/censored2.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wallbash.gif

Thanks for the warm welcome. I originally come from Scotland but now live Cranleigh, Surrey.

I do have a strobe qhich my kids love to have on, but I did worry about the epilepsy side of things and thought it might be too much hassle butting up signs it could be used etc.

I have mastered the art of fading in and out of songs, but you don't want to fade into a song then everyone sits down http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sad.gif

you'll soon get used to it all! If you ever want to come out to a gig - either kids or adults with me - then please let me know....... I mostly work surrey/greater london so you would be more than welcome to come along.

As regards to the strobe.... If you ever take on any school discos, you may possibly be asked specifically NOT to use them.... signs or no signs... I do about 20 odd schools and almost every one of them made the request for me not to use strobes.

If you use a strobe you MUST put up a sign. Should anybody have an epileptic fit and hurt themselves then you could be held liable. If you put up a sign at least you have something to cover you in the form of giving a clear warning to those attending who may suffer from epilepsy, if you don't do anything then it could be construed as negligence on your part.

I stopped using a strobe years ago, as Karen mentioned many schools will ask you to stop using one, because they themselves do not want to be held accountable for any avoidable illness or accidents of the children in their care, its common sense really, especially where kids are concerned.

If you use a strobe then get the a sign sorted http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif , it may be a few minutes worth of hassle at the start of the gig, but nothing compared to the hassle of going to court if something did happen. In this day of the American Philosophy of no win, no fee solicitors and stories in the press of huge negligence claims, we should all be covering our collective Arses http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif .

Hi Leonna, http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/042.gif

It's great to welcome another lady here.

Most DMX effects will do strobing (with an external controller) so there is not much need to carry a separate strobe nowadays, unless you want to go for high power type - not recommended.

But if you do use a strobe, never leave it on continuously. One or two seconds at a time should be the maximum, perhaps to fit with a drum fill, or climax of a build up in a song.

Definitely take up someone’s offer to tag along and see them in action - I'm sure you will find it very useful. I've been in Cowford, and Haslemere in the past month, but I'm not over that way for a couple of months now. (I'm based in Brighton.)

Thanks for the offer of tagging along with you Kazzachi. That would be a great help. My sister has a friend who DJ's and I was going to try to get together with him, but she hasn't managed to get a hold of him.

Let me know when you are near me and I will try to come along if you don't mind.

This weekend I am busy with school stuff, fencing match all Saturday and sitting in a field all Sunday. The joys of being a teacher !!!

Also thanks to Brian, I know Horsham well, I used to live in Southwater.

Why?..... whats the difference between a lady asking for advice and a man asking for advice?

Ladies do ask for advice, along with directions, blokes never admit they don't know, or are lost.

.....but what do I know ?
