1. What is your DJU Forum Alias?

DJae

2. What is your Real Name?

Jae Campbell

3. What is the Name of your Disco?

DJae Entertainment

4. How long have you been DJ'ing?

since 1970 (on and off)

5. What inspired you to become a DJ?

Sheer chance and a drunk friend!!! That and the sheer adrenaline rush of having people enjoying themselves thanks to moi efforts!

6. What type of "Do" was your first gig?

College party - I've said this before but I was at College and my mate (who'd more money than sense in those days) decided to buy some disco equipment... The theory was that girls would flock to him and one thing would lead to another - blah, blah, blah! Unfortunately Ian wasn't able to talk on the mic' (I believe the only words he said all night was ':cense: you lot' muttered into the mic near the end of the night), had no idea about programming music and basically started the gig by getting extremely blotto.. I'd been dragged along as a roadie and ended up running the night - at the end of the night the Union approached me to do a regular gig every month but as Ian was slightly upset at not 'pulling' and not being offered the contract himself (I think the vomit-covered t-shirt and glossy eyed stare might have had something to do with it) and refused to let me use his equipment so I had to go out and buy my own set up - things went from there...

7. How much did you charge

Charge? No idea, I think Ian drank it on the night, second gig brought me about a tenner I think...

8. What equipment did you have to begin with?

Couple of turntables direct into an old band amp, linked to 100 watt speakers, a lightbox and a couple of oil wheel projectors completed the rig. I went on to buy a solid switch coffin setup... Faders etc. hadn't been thought about at that time...

9. Whats the worst/most embarassing thing you've done in front of an audience?

Getting handcuffed for an entire gig!!! I used to do a little table magic and escapology as a warm up (especially for kids parties) - I was doing a short set at the beginning of a church disco and was going to do an escape from a sack (rigged bottom) and escape from some specially rigged handcuffs but one of the guests (a cop) decided to switch the 'cuffs before I got into the sack and I didn't realise! I got out of the sack and got my hands around the front but I couldn't jig the 'cuffs. I had to admit defeat to howls of laughter, especially as my keys didn't work and then the guest admitted what he'd done but pointed out that he'd left his at home so I had to run the whole dance in handcuffs while the guest was sent home to get the keys. He duly returned about five minutes before the end and to great pomp and ceremony released me to massive cheers... Not many referrals from that event.

10. What is your favourite type of function now? EG: Wedding, 18th Birthday party, etc?

Junior and primary school dances - the kids aren't old enough to be jaded and you can really get out and act silly. Weddings come a close second.

11. Is there anything that you include in your show now, that you wish you'd done/known when you started? (Not equipment, but in human/performer terms)

Yeah, prepare first, check everything out in advance and make sure you carry appropriate spares so once the dance starts you can ReLaX and just have fun... I start with a running list but rarely stick to it as I'm always ready to run with whatever rocks the audience.

12. What do you feel you offer your public, that makes you a better DJ than "the next guy/girl"?

The usual cliches - I play the music the clients want, I have a substantial music library and have a wide range of specialist music (including my register of 'clean' and Christian-acceptable tunes - great for church events of all faiths and school disco's) and we include a wide range of fun shows, games and activities for those who want total participation...

13. Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadnt? and why?

A Red Micro-BPM counter - never could get the thing to work properly!!!

14. Whats your next DJ purchase likely to be?

A new soundcard for the laptop - audiotrak Maya Ex7 and a audio exciter... I love gismo's!!!

15. If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be?

Dehydrated speakers complete with speaker stands, just add water (internally) or a bubble machine that wasn't a pain to pack up at the end of the night!!!

16. What do you think is the best thing about DJ'ing?

Helping people to have fun!

17. What do you think is the worst thing about DJ'ing?

Drunks wanting to get up close and personal when they want to make requests, closely followed by having to hard sell to try and close a contract.

18. What would make you stop DJ'ing (if anything)?

Nothing short of juvenile decay!

19. How do you think DJ'ing will change, in the next 5 years?

More digital systems, more integration of equipment (including lighting controllers, poss even amps integrated onto soundcards) so everything is controlled from a computer including the use of remotes to enable you to programme on the fly!

20. Most stupid thing anyone's ever said to you at a gig?

New Years - "and as we count down to the bells; ten, nine, eight... What do you mean its twenty past - oops sorry folks my watch stopped!!!"

21. Best advice you were ever given by a fellow DJ?

Plan for the worst beforehand, then work the night as though nothing can go wrong...

22. And worst advice you were ever given?

"You'll not need the spare amp, trust me..."

23. Name 3 songs that 95% of the time will fill you dance floor!

More later

30. How much have you "invested" in equipment?

£duh!!! The simple answer is too much

31. What was your reason for becoming a DJ?

I enjoy it - what other reason can there be? Its too much hard work and too many problems to do it just for the money (hah!)

About a couple of thousand over the years
