Friday - Busy night! 4 counties and 1 'gig'!!!

Popped into St Ives, Cambs, in the afternoon and said hi to David & his Dad (DJ Sounds & Jackwabbit).

Both look well!!! Hope the gig went ok. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Then popped over to Lakenheath, Suffolk, to see Peter, a very experienced part-time DJ (ex-full time) who was covering for me at a function.

Just wanted to say a quick 'Hi' before my next little trot. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

In 'true' military style precision, having already set-up his gear, Peter and I marched to the bar for a quick light refreshment before the guests arrived.

Before I left, he gave me a little thank you present for the gig ( http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/alcoholic.gif )

Top guy! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif

Left Lakenheath and popped back home to get changed (Essex) then drove over to Kent to guest-DJ at a friends function, and arrived home this morning at 5am!

Not so much a 'profitable' night but enjoyable!!!!

Saturday - Kent. Joint 30th Wedding Anniversary / 21st Birthday. That'll be a laugh!!!!

Friday was a bit of a slow start; at 8pm there were about 6 bar staff, 3 bouncers Dave, myself and only 6 other people in the bar.

Whether this was down to the weather or not we don’t know, it was persistently raining which probably didn’t help!

The taxi’s started pulling up outside at 8:30pm & by 9pm there were mini buses full of people arriving, so everything was in full swing from then to midnight.

A buss driver who came in for a quick pint at 8:30pm while waiting for someone to come out & fix his bus, enjoyed it so much he didn’t leave until 11pm after having at least 6 pints. As he left he said he would be coming back next week bringing all his mates.

There were lots of calls for more at midnight & no one wanted to go home with some chanting for hi ho silver lining, so we put in on, while packing up the lighting, everyone was singing & waving their arms.

As they were leaving we were getting lots of good comments as they passed us on route to the door still singing.

The only person who didn’t seem to think it was a good night was the new manager of the pub; he didn’t think they had made much of a profit because things were so slow at the start. With the streets outside looking like a ghost town, & only half a dozen customers in the bar I don’t know what he was expecting. By 9pm I had to wait up to 5 minuets sometimes to get a drink because there were so many people trying getting their drinks, I’d be very surprised if he didn’t make a profit from the evening.

Saturday; 40th birthday.

The client wanted us to start at 7pm with music for the kids, and then halfway through the evening (9pm approx) they wanted to bring the birthday cake out and wanted the happy birthday song played, then onto party music up to the finish at 11pm.

Well that’s what they wanted!!!!

Now here’s what happened.

Arrived at 6pm to set up, all ready by 6:30 so started playing music while they finished getting the food ready.

7pm only 2 kids, the birthday boy & his wife sitting around waiting for the guests to arrive.

7:30pm we asked when they were expecting everyone, their reply was “oh our lot are always late, shouldn’t be log now”

8:30pm the guests start to arrive.

8:45pm finally started to play music for the kids; at this point they opened the doors out to an outdoor play area. The kids (all 10 of them) then decided it would be a good idea to chase each other up & down the hall and outside screaming all the way. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif

The organiser then asked for the music to be turned down, we couldn’t even hear the music from behind the speakers over the screaming kids & people talking. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/014.gif

9pm just as things started to look good and most people were there, they put all the lights on in the hall for the food so everyone was walking back & forth stuffing their faces until 9:45pm when they turned out the hall lights.

9:45pm asked them about the cake thing? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/533.gif They said they would do it at 10pm, & it wasn’t just for the birthday boy it was also for his Nan and 2 other people & they had cakes for all of them.

10pm we got the birthday boy in the middle of the room, quick announcement & in came the cake, happy birthday played & sung, hip, hip hurray & all the other rubbish. By time this was done 4 times it was 10:30pm.

10:45pm the first people got up to dance, (& even after reminding people we were open to requests all night) the first request came in for tracks to be re-played that were played during the food.

11pm announced the last track, at this point the floor filled up with people dancing (I said to Dave “you should have announced last track an hour a go” http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

Then you guessed it they wanted another one, then another one. Finally started packing away at 11:15pm.

After nights like this I start to wonder why they bothered to book a disco when all they really wanted was backing music. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wallbash.gif

I hope it all went better for you Dan.

It wasn’t quite as bad as it sounds, he was off duty at 8pm and after waiting from 6pm for someone to come out to fix it, he phoned them up to say “here’s your bus come and collect it I’m finished for the day” he went home by taxi.

Well Last night was the best one I have done yet (Only my 2nd), the dancefloor was full of young lesbians grinding against each other. Myself and my good friend stood in amazement and tried to find as many raunchy tracks as we could, Boombastic by shaggy was the best one, I came over quite peculiar but my wife sorted me out by grabbing my nuts and telling me to stop gawping http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sterb188.gif , well I can see why I started mobile DJing now, its good for the blood lol, 1am finish and an excellent tip capped off a great night in Bedfordshire, early night tonight thank god after lashings of bitter yum yum yum, you can guess what im gonna be dreaming of tonight eh? the Hussies http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sleep1.gif

Friday - Did a kiddies disco for 100 5-11 year olds at a local school... Kids liked it and gave out about 5 cards, so hopefully the parents did too!!

Then met up with Mr ADS for a beverage on the way home - but had to take the fiance with me as she had helped at the kids party.. Nice to meet you Andy!

Saturday did a kiddies party from 12-2, which went well and then a drive of 25 miles for an evening joint 50th/60th birthday.. Arrived to find another DJ already setting up... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/scared.gif I called the client, the other DJ called his friend. Result = the organiser had called someone before me who was busy but who said he would check with their friend to see if they were free. Their friend called the guy who was setting up who said he could do it, but no one called the organiser back.

So he had called me, I had sent the contract, playlist and all other details and called them during the week etc to confirm all the details so I got the gig on the night!! Paperwork helps!!)

In the end, it was a good night.. Sporadic dancing as a lot of people were just happy to chat and sing along... A DJ friend of mine was helping me as the function room was up a flight of stairs and he played Billy Joel - Tell Her About It...

I was shocked at the reaction as I never play it.... EVERYONE got up... Then Working My Way Back To You, Detroit Spinners.. They all kept dancing and singing along - just goes to show!!! Will be working them into my sets (certainly that age range) from now on!

Sunday was a wedding fair from 11 till 3... Got about 3 definates and 2 maybes so worthwhile.....
