Following on from Chris's comments about smoking and stress do you think stress levels have gone up because people now are not allowed to smoke at work so 'smoke breaks' are not being taken and people stay at their work stations longer with nothing to break up the working day. i.e. no gossip etc to lighten the mood.

Just a thought

I think that smoking certainly is still used as a way of easing stress, and probably a high level of stress makes it far harder to actually kick the habit. After all, the process of lighting up is a familar routine which may, in the short term, help with relaxation during a stressful situation. Is a vicious circle and cycle which is difficult to break.

Incidentally those who place smoking or obesity as the biggest cause of disease and illness may be interested to read that recent research has found that workers exposed to medium to high levels of stress for at least half their working lives are 25 per cent more likely to die from a heart attack, and have 50 per cent higher odds of suffering a fatal stroke. (Source:- TUC and NHS)

Research has shown that stress is now Britain’s number one workplace health hazard, overtaking even smoking related diseases. An individual’s mental health deteriorates when a change in workload results in higher demands, less control and reduced support.

Of course this is true, however, we still have to get the risks into perspective. Let's say that one in every 83 people has a fatal stroke - 60,000 deaths per year from a population of say 50m, then that is one thing. You have a 1 in 83 chance of dying from a stroke. If being stressed increases that chance by 50%, then you have a 1.5 in 83 chance of dying from a stroke. However, if you smoke, you have a 1 in 2 chance of dying because of your smoking.

And, to echo what Eskie said, your friend's stress is unlikely to kill you.

Cheers,

Jack.
