Conaught rooms covent garden

Recommended Posts

hi all,

has any of you ever played in the main ballroom at the conaught rooms(the freemasons lodge) in covent garden london.

went to a summer balls there this year and the place echoes really badly.

the dj that done it this year only used two speakers on tripods and it was loud enough using 300w a side but very echoey. the hall holds 700 - 800 people.

ive been booked for next years ball and just wondered what power i need.

just baught a pair of active FBT maxx4s at 400rms each. does anyone think i need subs or not. phoned a hire shop near the venue just to get a rough idea and was told i need 3kw. a good setup they could supply was 4 mackie srm450s and 2 subs.

is he talking total http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/censored2.gif or do i need that much power.

If they invite 800 people and you want a good loud sound for all of them, 3Kw is about right, but are you trying to creat a night club or just play music to a mixed age group ?

also 800 people will sort the echo out , if your mixing then take a monitor speaker and put it on a tripod to the side of you.

if you are only expecting a couple of hundred people then your own sound system will be ok try and postion it close to the dance area.....

you might have to remember that playing a large sound system might make it hard for the guests to have a conversation.. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/whistling.gif

hi DJ Marky Mark

the ball is for a large hospital with 3000+ staff and every year all the tickets are sold out within a week so your gauranteed a full house.

they have also got a five piece band booked so i wont know until the night how much space i will have. the music will be a various mixture of chart and cheese with a few dance tunes thrown in. wont be doin much mixing so might get away without having a monitor. i want it to be loudish but not too loud so they cant talk

so a full house then ?

well put it this way, if you take too much sound you can always turn it down !

if you dont take enough you are in trouble http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

800 people in a big hall if it was me i would have

two stacks of speakers 2 > 4 KW one each side of the dance floor,

I use some big JBL's and would double my standerd disco setup follow link to take a look , my rig

get your self a monitor speaker to compensate for the echo your mixer should have a booth output so you can hear what your doing.....

i use a EV sx200 plastic moulded Cab on a proel stand for this job its about 300watts and clear as a bell...

dont forget to turn the monitor down when you use the mic

Hi Jim,

I did 3 gigs there a couple of years ago. A word of warning, the place is chaotic, parking a nighmare but that's London for you.

One of the 3 gigs was in the main ballroom for about 500 guests. I took a 4K sound system consisting of 6 x 500w full range cabs, and 2 x 500w subs and it was fine. The following week I was in a different room, the chap doing the ball room turned up with a 20Kw rig. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif

Another tip if you are mixing, get used to using split cue if you have it on your mixer with a premium set of headphones, then you should not have any problems with echoes.

Cheers,

Brian

thanks for the responce guys.

sold my 5k rig almost 9 years ago due to being disabled with arthritis.

have just started up again in the last year and slowly building up the gear again.

still got my sl 1210s tho.

the gear ive got so far is:2 technics 1210s, numark cd mix2 (its ok it does the job for now) just bought 2 FBT maxx4 active speakers 16kg each(was going to get the maxx 5s 25kg or maxx 6s 29kg but they were too http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/censored2.gif heavy for me). a couple of genie lights,T bar and speaker stands, twin red laser, antari smoke machine,a large sound to light front screen, also just got a numark ws33 radio mic but its kack so on the lookout for a akg which was recomended on the forum. and roughly 14,000 records and about 1000 cds.

anyway,i think im going to have to hire some speaker stacks,at least the hire company delivers sets up and collects. (by the way, nice setup Marky Marc)

theve booked a five piece band and they are charging £1,200 they also offered to do the disco for £300 but were told by the hospital that £300 was too much? (ive just found out that we have gone over buget this year by 20 million squid). as im on the entertainments committee at the hospital there expecting me to do it for a bit cheaper (is it worth it i ask myself).

thanks for the warning about parking brian, ive never driven down there before, always gone in a strech limo. ive got a disabled badge but im not sure if it covers the centre of london.

anyway, its not until july 1st next year so got plenty of time to think about it.

thanks once again for the advice guys.

thanks for the advice brian,

what they normaly do is move all the tables nearest the dancefloor cos it gets packed like sardines. its difficult to judge but i think there roughly 400-500 on there and they stay dancing all night. all the other doctors and nurses are either slumped at there tables unable to stand or doing things we wont go into here!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/hug.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/boff.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/drool.gif

Likely that they, "work hard, play hard" (ie drink lots). http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif

  • 5 months later...

I have played the Connaught Rooms, and I found that access is through the front doors, where all the guests come in, and the street outside is one seriously stressful experience. Parking if you are lucky will entail quite a walk back to the venue, and to top it off, there are always several DJ's working on several floors, and all use the one lift which doesn't hold all your kit. It is a fairly large logistics nightmare, so ensure that you have a good team of roadies. You will need at least two. and don't expect to be able to get wrapped and out very early. You may benefit from booking a hotel room for the night. If you like it busy, you will have fun.

thanks for that shortvehicle.

heres a update on whats happening...

soulfish the band has been booked for wait for it £2,500 http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/omg.gif

they also offered to do the disco for an extra £300 so thanks to them thats the budget the committee has put aside for the disco.

as im on the organizing committee they asked me if id like to do the disco as im the resident dj at the hospital so i said yes (mad fool i am)but with a budget of £300 i cant see myself making any money at all.

ive now hired a 4k jbl speaker system including delivery, set up & take down which includes a free T bar for £188

i will be using my own twin cd mixer (not sure about the 1210s yet. less to carry)

and my 3 abstract gladiators plus a few other lighting effects i have.

i dont have a roadie so the less to carry the better.

ive got a disabled badge and the connaught rooms have said there are 4 disabled parking spaces opposite the entrance so if i get there between 5 and 6pm i should get one of them spaces.

so 5pm - 4am http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fear.gif its going to be a long night

-update-

it gets better as they are now expecting me to do the disco for free http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/omg.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/Protest_emoticon.gif

went to the connaught rooms today (it looks a lot bigger when the lights are on).

one side of the road is residents parking only and there are only 3 disabled spaces directly opposite on a first come basis http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/signdammit.gif with 40p for 10 minutes parking in all the other spaces(thats camden council for you). so will have to get there early.

the stage they were setting up was 1ft high or the other option was a 2.5ft high stage.

looking at the mains wall sockets there was only 2 double sockets each side of the stage. "do you think this will be enough for a band and disco"? or do i need extra long extention cables to find extra sockets.

oh well, 3 weeks to go and it will be all over, thank god.
