Porting Speakers

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have made my own speakers using an RCL 1x15" Bass-Mid at 600Watts. I have fitted a horn tweeter which is rated at 400w, and my box is made of 3/4 MDF and the size is 45x41x66 cm

Some people have said I need to put in ports!! but I do not understand what this means, I have an idea its a hole, but, how big does it need to be? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

speaker cabinet design is a bit of a black art, so avoid porting your boxes....

for best resutls from what i can tell from your setup you need to put some of that acoustic wool you get from car radio shops and fill the boxes with it, make sure your MDF is guled and nothing moves or vibrates .

to get more bass you would need porting but this will make the midrange sound wooly and as these seem to be mid high cabs you have made then just dont do it.........

BOX them 15's in tight........

Cutting holes wont make them louder.....

go to some car radio shops and take a look at the bass boxes they sell you will see that the best ones have no porting.....

Good luck.

Cheers for that, Everything is glued and then screwed and siliconed in, so I will leave them alone, like they say, if it aint broke, dont fix it, and they sound OK to me, I think its just other people point of view they are trying to get over to me.

Thanks for the guidence

Porting the boxes will make the driver move more thus producing more base.

My advice would be to go the rcl website to see what there specifications are for an appropiate enclosure or measure

The size and length of the port determins how much the driver moves and either gives you a thumpy base or more of a drone if set wrong.

I made a set of base bins based on a bose design but i tried differant port sizes and lengths and they sound great untill i blown a driver and decided to buy some substations!

I considered making my own a while ago and found a lot of good info on the net.

Have a search on google for "speaker design" etc.

Actually Car sub boxes dont work quite the same as Pro Audio. Smaller boxes have ports because the sound pressure of a small sub is not enough to "thump" in a car. I build subboxes and custom cabinets, and porting, bandpass, and enclosed boxes all depend on the driver going in to it.

e.g.

A 12" JL Pro Audio W0 requires 42.5 Litres enclosed, but 115.2 litres if it is to be ported.

An Eminance 12" Delta Pro recomends a vented box of 51 - 83 litres

To get the same volume and quality is a vehicle you need a lot more power compared to the disco/band systems. Also ALL car speakers are 4ohm.

As Marc has said... there is an art to it. Before making any holes. Find out from the manufacturer what they recommend. You may find they dont require ports, instead foam in the cabinet, or a smaller enclosure!

The only UK number 1 record to contain in its lyrics the title of the song which knocked it off number 1 was... Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (lyric: "Mamma Mia")!
