OK, Get a cuppa, its a moaner...............

Thursday, set up kit and tested, all OK, took it to the venue (I was busy until 7.30pm, the gig started at 8pm with a meal, so no rush), got to the hotel, and set up, one light not working, managed to fix it, the the speaker blew, not too much of a problem as it was a very small venue, and the guests were librarians, blagged it throught the night (started at 10, finished at 11.30),

Packing away and I get a telephone call at 12.30am, could I help out at a conference as more kit was required etc etc etc, no problem, so set up a conference at 1am, finished at 4.30am, got home at 5am.

Bed at 5.30am, then at 7.30am the telephone rings, can I do a job today, being somewhere at 8am, OK, done !, doing the job, and as I am waiting in a narrow lane a Land Rover takes a liking to my mirror and BANG, takes it with them, so NO mirrors at all now (I have a solid rear door and my NS mirror glass went a couple of days ago), so driving around the lanes with my head out the window seeing if I can get through.

A mile later all the lights on the dashboard come on, I pull over and see that my power steering idler is shot, drive it to my machanic man in the village with no PAS, VERY hard work !!, jump into the car to continue journey, making lots of telephone calls as my wife needs the car to do the school run, managed to get daughter picked up, and finish 'little job' by 6pm just in time to get to my gig which starts at 7pm, with the kit already set up

Luckily I can leave my kit set up all of December at my hotel, so no van required for Friday or Saturday, phew !

Order bits from Mercedes (£200), and off to the Friday night gig, started at 10pm, had 24 people in a room for 165, 6 people danced all night. Finished at 12 on the nose after the days I have had, got out of there by 12.30 and home for 1am for a change. Bed by 2am.

7.30am this morning my mobile rings again.....bloody wrong number ! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/188.gif

Am now taking my daughter to a party in the car, collecting parts for my van, collecting daughter from said party and home for 1pm. I then have to set up a small gig (that will fit in my car) for Sunday evening, luckily only one speaker and a head unit is required !

Leaving home this afternoon at 4pm to adjust some more kit somewhere, then when I finish I need to be somewhere at 2am, BEFORE I do my normal 'rounds', so will be home at about 7am tomorrow morning http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wallbash.gif

Shattered already !!

Anyway van is getting fixed on Monday, and I have no big gigs that require a van (I have got use of another van if there was a problem) but the moral of the story is after all this

Make sure you other vehicle is insured to carry your business equipment just in case.

Rant over and I need another cuppa now.

.....but what do I know ?

Last nights 60th started off as one of Gary's DJ dillemas.

Set of steps down into the function room, so had to get the steward to give me a lift with the trunk down the steps. (Luckily, very friendly staff there).

The ceiling is so low that I could touch the ceiling when stood on the dancefloor and then the stage was about 9 inches high, which meant that my head was just clearing the ceiling.

Had to set up on the stage as the dance floor wasn't big enough for me as well as dancers, so set up the stand with just half of the lighting bar poles fitted in the stand and just mounted 2 lights on the lighting bar for safety. (I think this is only the second time I've gone out without thrownig the tripod lighting stands in the car, just in case). Set up the other 2 lights on the floor behind me pointing up at the ceiling.

First person to arrive is the woman who booked me, with a gang of little darlings http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif . Played top 40 and music for the little treasures till the birthday boy arrived. (Why are they call little treasures............Because they should be buried http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/188.gif ).

On arrival of the birthday boy switched over to soul and motown as requested by the customer, result - empty dancefloor.

After half an hour sneaked back over to party music and got them back on the dancefloor when customer comes over and asks for soul and motown to go back on, cue empty dancefloor.

Eventually, after a couple of hours of this, I think she gets the message and leaves me to it, and the dancefloor remains busy for the rest of the night. Untill, 20 minutes before the end, when the dancefloor is buzzing, she decides to stop the party and cut the cake http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wallbash.gif .

Best part, I was booked till 12 but the steward tells me I have to finish at 11:30, so home by 12:20 http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif

PS: She was still asking for Manhatten songs on the night, but I couldn't get any sense out of her if it was a group, a cd, or a style of music she was after. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/533.gif

here we are with a report on last nights gig, in a new venue for me, The Howerd Swiss Hotel, on temple place, just off the Embankment,

this has got to be one of Londons best Hotels for access & parking, masses of it, and a plus is you are allowed to park in the loading bay, with access to the function rooms all on the one floor and not steps either, (there were also plent of trolleys to borrow) the hotel is very noce, and the staff very helpfull as well, kept us fed & watered.

turned out the party was for an IT solution company, so the mix once again was 70/40 men to women, but had them dancing all night.

The only down side was at 11pm, when one young lady who had drunk far too much decided to throw up whilt she was in mid dance, all over the dance floor, and some of here fellow guests, noe there's a floor clearer

Christmas Parties Thurs/Fri/Sat. Most of the management have changed from last year and the old policy of 'If they're having a good time give them an extra 20 mins' has gone and we have to finish on time.

It now means that some of the last minute requests have to be ignored although I do try to fit in as many as possible by starting tracks half way through. Last night at the end a bloke came up and asked why I hadn't played his request? 'I did about 10 minutes ago'. 'Where was I?' he asked.......'Right there on the dancefloor' I replied. Oh the effects of alcohol http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

The night before some people drank themselves into unconsciousness and 2 ambulances had to be called..........so all in all a pretty normal weekend http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Friday,

Teacher & staff Christmas party at Guildford, (Kindly passed on by Marky Marc through this forum) http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thanks.gif

Nice little venue with access up a back staircase that you can park right next to the door. Little being the word, the place could only take about 100 people at Max.

Only 30 of the expected 50 people turned up but most of them were ready for a good time, and they did have a good time and without lots of falling down juice (most of them had to drive home after so they were on soft drinks all night)

It was a little unusual to see people having so much fun without being drunk, in fact the only one who didn’t have fun was the barman, he was complaining at the end of the night that he hadn’t taken much money. He also expected us to pack up and get out within 10mins of the last song being played. He was in so much of a hurry to get home he was telling the young lad that was working behind the bar to carry our gear down to the van, we declined his offer by pointing out that we were covered by insurance for falling down stairs with the gear & they weren’t.

Saturday,

18th birthday for approx 150 people, as usual being teenagers they wanted it loud, loud, loud,Our ears were still ringing by time we got home, using an active crossover & 2 amps has given us a lot more headroom & where the amps were peaking before for less volume they now go a lot louder without peaking at all.

It was a good night with even the lads dancing not just the girls right from the start, unfortunately it was brought to an abrupt end while everyone was up dancing (& buzzing) when the bar staff came out at 11:05pm and said “that’s your last song” we were due to stop at 11:15pm so it came as a bit of a shock to everyone. There were lots of shouting & cheering for more so after wishing the birthday girl happy birthday I played a quick burst of happy birthday while my father was taking down all the lighting.

We both felt guilty about bringing the night to such a sudden end just as everyone was having such a good time, we went to the birthday girl & her parents apologising for the way the night finished. They were all very understanding & couldn’t thank us enough for such a good night.

Friday night - local primary school christmas disco.

Went fantasticly well. Absolutely all the kids were up dancing.

I think this one went the best out of all of the ones I've done at this school.

This one, they introduced prizes for the best boy and girl dancer, which helped keep them up a lot easier, and they were a lot less shy to dance. Also did a raffle which was cool. It went so well, and I mentioned that I thought that the prizes had helped, that they said that they would have prizes every disco http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday night - 18th bithday party.

Also went absolutely brilliantly, despite the very 'unvaried' playlist (rock, heavy metal)

Great crowd, well up for it. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif

Started to get quite a few requests for R n' B / Garage stuff, so after checking with the birthday boy that it was ok to play a few requests, and him saying that was fine, started playing some requests, which not surprisingly filled the floor with girls while the people who were more into the rock / metal stuff retreated http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Anyway, it was very hard work. I had to alternate between the rock stuff and the more R n' B / Chart stuff to keep everyone happy. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

All in all it was the absolute dogs danglies of a night and I was asked to play an extra half hour (paid) (was supposed to play till 11:30, went on till 12) and also got a £10 tip on top, with a promise that they would definately be booking me for their 21st http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/cool.gif )

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday afternoon / evening - Kids party at local village hall.

Went reasonably well http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif , but didn't feel half as good of have a buzz like Friday or Saturday night.

Clients seemed very happy and got a lot of parents come up to me and ask for a card http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Altogether a wicked weekend, thoughly enjoyed myself, but am completely knackered! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

Following one guy collapsing during the last-but-one tune a week or so ago (admittedly due to him drinking on top of medication), there was a young lady on Friday night who lapsed into unconsciousness, a few minutes after the gig finished - she soon woke up though - after being sick into her own hair.... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/yucky.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/goodjob.gif her mates helped her into a taxi - which is much more stylish than an ambulance.

Hi

Friday, nut-crunchingly good night for the 13 to 16's, got them all nicely warmed up for Xmas.

Saturday, watched X factor and got a bit ticked off with Sharon Osborne's PMT outburst.

Last night...

Wedding in posh hotel.

Night went very well considering we were playing from 6.30 until 12.30

Dancefloor was busy from 7.30 onwards.

by 11.30 only about 30 ppl left out of 200, lightweights! However they stuck at it and really got into it and more than made up for the boring gits.

Down side, Darren J had his mobile phone stolen virtually from right under our noses.

And, I had an Email waiting for me when I got home from a guest of the function saying that it was the worst disco they'd ever seen, read the Flaming annoyed top for details if you're interested in that story.

I was booked till 1am, hotel manager said finish at 11:30 http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/scared.gif , made the agent aware, got B&G to liase with hotel. Finished at 11:30, in bed by 1am http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/hug.gif

Thursdays gig was for a local business travel company.. They had asked for me to start later than usual as they run their own party games etc....

So thought I'd go take a look see if I could get any ideas..... They had arrived at 6.30 and had a £1000 credit at the bar (which ran out at 10!) - Around 80 people..

Party games were the real childish ones (like Pass The Parcel which they asked us to play music for at 9.20!) so nothing useful out of that. Weird crowd but up for a party so loadsa party tunes and then a few new ones as well...

To give you a hint of the type of crowd (mainly women!) the young (drunk) lady on the table closest to the DJ stand had a massive black vibrator on her table which she kept turning on and touching peoples faces with.......... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif

Made me feel really inadequate http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/014.gif

Good night though - all very drunk so danced to everything!

Friday was a seniors golf club evening - good night with lots of waltzes/quicksteps..

Saturday was a local garden centre - had got a playlist from hell from them but managed to fit 99% of the rubbish requests during the meal so that helped... Not as many dancing as I wouldve liked, but the owner of the company told me it was the best party they had had in years so they must've liked it...

Good few gigs...

Onto tonights now where it's the local hospitals party - so loads of nurses!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/cool.gif Its not all bad this DJ lark!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

like most of you, I'm doing xmas company parties virtually every night.

On saturday I overheard one woman complaining loudly to a group of blokes that she weren’t gonna be in London again for at least 6 months, and yet no one was gonna shag her tonight!?

The gig I did on Friday; the company that booked the venue signed a contract to state that they would spend a minimum of £4,500 behind the bar. With 2 hours of the party to go they’d only spent £2,500 and many of them weren’t drinking that much at all. Surely ANYONE with any sense would have started ordering expensive champagne etc to get full use of the money they were gonna have to spend, but NO, they didn’t! the manager of the club kept coming upto me to let me know the progress. He was completely baffled by them… pleased but baffled! They ended up only using £3,400 but still had to pay £4,500! How daft is that!?!

Xmas parties every night between now and next week except a wedding on saturday and then an after-show gig at Wembley Arena next tuesday for Will Young and his record company execs and friends!

...nearly forgot to mention; last week I was at The Jazz Cafe with Ian Stewart to see a singer called Rahsaan Patterson; WHAT A GIG!!!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/notworthy.gif he was absolutely superb... actually no, that's an understatement, he was better than that.

If any of you wanna hear some real genuine soul and think that there's no decent R&B/Soul stuff around anymore then check this guy out. He released an album earlier this year which was his 3rd release and all 3 are fantastic. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif

Hi all

Just thought I would let you know how the X Factor gig went.

Well I travelled up to stay with my parents on Friday night as they live near Fountain Studios in Wembley where the X Factor is filmed.

My sister came with me as she works there (This is how I got the gig) to help me set up, as I wasnt on until 10pm I had plenty of time to chill and have a walk around the set during the break which was great. Once the final was over I played some background music until security checked everyone in, by about 10.30pm the place was pretty packed out.

It took a wjhile to get the production stafff going as it is a free bar all they seem to want to do is DRINK http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/beer.gif .

Well by 11pm I put on the classic party tunes, by now they were all fuelled up and ready to party. I had a request for Tragedy by Steps, which I havent played in a long while but to my suprise Kate Thorton the main Presenter rushed up on stage and strutted her stuff (Very Nice). I was to told to finish by 1am and finished the night of with Queen "Bohiemium rapsody" (Not sure if this is the right spelling) as this is what was requested and the whole room sang to this which was great.

Overall I had a great night there and hope to return again next year but my sister has informed me the after show party could be held at the Albert Hall (Dont Know about that then???????) http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif

DJ Frankie Knuckles.
