OK, now most mobile DJ's are probably more open minded to different music styles than most people (ADS excepted who just hates all music http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/whistling.gif ) but is there any genre of music that you really dislike?

Gotta say for me it's Heavy Metal http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/pooh.gif

I like rock and artists such as Guns n Roses, Zeppelin, Hendrix etc but when it gets to things like Twisted Sister, Sepultra etc, to me it's just noise http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wallbash.gif

Could only put a maximum of 10 styles, so wasn't able to include Novelty/Christmas hits, Indie, New Age music, Folk etc etc http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Most certainly Country & Western, it makes people line dance and that was started by the Americans because not one of them could remember all the steps on there own. Makes me cringe just thinking about all those ankle slappers.

Absolutely hate RAP. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbdown.gif

Not too keen on heavy metal either.

Favorite music doesn't fit into any one genre. I tend to like anything thats "musical" from Queen to Gilbert & Sulivan. (Note: that is not a mistake for Gilbert O'Sullivan)

Quitting Smoking & Drinking doesn't make you live longer

It just feels like it.

I dont dislike any music type as it mostly goes in one ear and out the other but if i can use it to create an aptmosphere when working then its great whatever it is ! I will admit that i dont listen to music at home.

I also avoid Northern soul !!!!!!!!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Heavy metal....not too keen on, the same with most R&B

Would never dismiss a track just 'cause I dont like a particular genre (sorry going of topic!), but overall am not too keen on the above

Also classical, I have little time for....I have no culture!!!

I voted rap. I dont like it myself, due to the course vocals and dull, repetitive rhythms. I used to have a certain degree of respect for Eminem for his lyrics (rather than his delivery of those lyrics), however now only "Without me" gets played if I'm asked for "Anything by...".

Rap features (alongside "Heavy metal") as the most common "Dont play" on the music sheets which I use with clients.

Crass, more shouted than sung delivery of lyrics together with content also turns me away from Prodigy.

I'm no fan of whiny electic guitars either, such as Oasis, although the brothers in Oasis do little to endear otherwise "neutral" or "Take em or leave'em" listeners.

I also find "Progressive" music, in most genres, a fairly disappointing listen. It takes ages to build to anything http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sleep1.gif , then when it does finally get there http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif , it drops you http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif .

Ditto. I don't exactly like his music or the fact that when you play the radio edit 2 mins of the song magically disappear to be replaced with bleeps or blank passages http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif but I think some of his lyrics identify real life problems, and some of what he says in lyrics, are exactly what the majority of people secretly agree with, but are too scared to say publically.

I don't like Opera, Country and Western or this tuneless commercial R'n'B, where as long as you rattle lots of Jewellery, wear a large golden dog turd around your neck and sing about what a nasty bloke your boyfriend is, means that you are automatically assured of a hit http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

I can live with most music, I don't like too much of any one type though.

A lad who works with me playes rock stuff all the time over and over again, the same tracks over and over again, and its gets on my t--s http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/attentionwhore.gif

however, I do like the rock nights in the local pub with live bands. I quite often do a few tracks of popular rock stuff at my gigs. I supose that I could not do DJ'ing if I hated anything classed as popular music.

Heavy metal; not only the music but what it stands for as well.

Hip hop and teeny pop does itself no favours either in my humble opinion.

So you're a feminist..... Isn't that cute!!

I must say i am really suprised that so many hate rap so much, what about stuff like House of Pain- Jump around and other such old school classics, 2 pac - california love, Dr dre,run dmc, naughty by nature etc dont you like them and dont you ever use them? Would be suprised if most of you dont play Jump around at least once a year http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

If someone asked for some Run DMC, I'd be able to offer "Walk this way" and (seasonally) "Christmas in Hollis", and that "It's like that" which they shared with Jason(?) whatshisname, and I might have a 2pac track on a compilation somewhere.

I do have "House of Pain: Jump around" but it tends to only get aired if musically similar requests have proved popular to the floor.

However, as mentioned above, the most popular request that I've had from clients regarding rap, is: "Dont play any". http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/kid.gif

2004 saw me swatting up on Country & Western/New country tunes in order to play an entire gig of those tunes, however, I would turn down a gig if I knew beforehand that it was entirely going to be rapping and/or hip-hop. Both genres strike me as having more than their far percentage of songs which try to incite you with negative emotions eg: I'm angry about how tough the world is for me and my mates, and I want you to feel angry too http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/1106.gif . It doesn't make me feel angry, it makes me feel for the "Eject" button. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/yucky.gif

I understand what you are saying Gary but if lyrics are to be discussed then i wonder how many times djs avoid eric prydz "call on me" which incites a lot of people to get really irritated ! I think there are many songs that are played during a year that incite negative emotions no matter what genre. Country and western isnt exactly the happiest of catagories and neither is rock or reggae for that matter,so perhaps pop or dance music is the way to go ?. I seem to have pulled eskies thread off topic so apologies for that

I voted for Drum and Bass, purely coz to me it sounds like a drum machine with diahorrea (sp)..

I don't mind Country and Western at times - mainly new country, not the old melancholy stuff....

Rap I can live with, but don't play too much at gigs, like Gary it is usually on the do not play list....

Heavy Metal - Wouldnt play it at a gig, and wouldnt accept a gig who asked for it - it's not a style I am that familiar with - I do like the odd Metallica track but as a rule it's just noise..... With shouting......

Totally agree with you CS - annoying lyrics are certainly not limited to any one particular genre - and definately not any particular group.

There have been several songs, well perhaps "Tracks" might be a better term, over the last couple of years which have been potentially annoying simply by their repeated use of the same lyrics - almost as if the artist/producer couldnt be bothered to include a second verse, or clean up a longer sample off of some old track, so just kept repeating a short part.

Some examples which spring to mind are the otherwise talented Destiny's child for their release "Lose my breath"; Kelis's "Milkshake", the Eric Prydz (nasty bassline discussed elsewhere) "Call on me" track,etc,etc....all tracks where, once you've heard the first 20 seconds of vocals, you've heard the entire lyrical content of the track... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sad.gif

Anyway...poll wise, we seem to have two fairly distinct "winners" or possibly "losers" in terms of Genre, with Heavy Metal and Rap both getting most "hate" votes.

It can be easy for emotive, or provocative topics which ask "what do you hate?", to drift off-topic, as someone votes, or comments on someone elses favourite, but I think that we've managed to avoid any particular flare-ups thus far...(famous last words http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif ).

Ultimately, as Eskie mentioned in the first post on this thread, we as mobile DJ's are more open-minded toward what types of music we carry (we really have to carry a "bit of everything") than say, a club DJ might be. You never know when the spotty little 13 year old, with the Eminem T-shirt and bleached crew cut is going to ask you to play some Neil Diamond, Fatback Band, Earth Wind & Fire, or Odyssey... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif

I hate 'both types of music' (quote from Blues Brothers) - Contry AND Western!!! It is the music from the devil!!

Bagpipes are ok really if played in tune, otherwise classify under C&W

Classical music gets on my t1ts, too pretentious...

Jazz is wonderful

Trance has had its day, but I like it

House is tops

R&B is misunderstood, but can be really good

Hip-hop is also misunderstood and can be excellent

Rap - what do you class as rap? Sugarhill Gang? funny how many people don't know how to classify music and write off a whole genre on the basis of a few cr@p tunes - bit like me & C&W

D&B can be really boring, but some D&B uses wicked latin riffs - excellent! It is also evolving and has a huge number of followers, so worth exploring

Heavy Metal - there are some great rock tunes around

EDIT: forgot to say: I play what the punter likes, not necessarily what I am biased into liking or not...
