Eskie 0
QUOTE (brianmole @ Jan 4 2005, 12:45 PM)I hate 'both types of music' (quote from Blues Brothers) - Contry AND Western!!! It is the music from the devil!! That was a great quote from a GREAT film http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif QUOTE Classical music gets on my t1ts, too pretentious... Jazz is wonderful Trance has had its day, but I like it House is tops R&B is misunderstood, but can be really good Hip-hop is also misunderstood and can be excellent Rap - what do you class as rap? Sugarhill Gang? funny how many people don't know how to classify music and write off a whole genre on the basis of a few cr@p tunes - bit like me & C&W D&B can be really boring, but some D&B uses wicked latin riffs - excellent! It is also evolving and has a huge number of followers, so worth exploring Heavy Metal - there are some great rock tunes around There is some fantastic jazz around and there are so many offshoots of Jazz: Fusion, Latin, Trad, Acid-jazz http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/toot.gif I don't mind Classical at all, some of it is very relaxing at the right moment. Trance bores me to death, it's just SOOOOOOO monotonous http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sleep1.gif House is often good, but Funky House is wicked http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif Very much agree with your statement that R&B is misunderstood. I reckon that most of the 'R&B' tracks that people hate/dislike are probably not R&B at all and most of them are probably Pop (Christina, Britney, J-Lo) or Rap (Ja Rule, Dizzy Rascal, Jay-Z). I'm puzzled by the frequent distinction between Rap & Hip-Hop and would love to know how people define Rap & then define Hip-Hop http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/533.gif I dislike most gangsta rap but love stuff like A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, Guru, Digital Underground. To me there is a clear distinction between Rock & Heavy Metal. Rock usually has understandable lyrics and talented musicians such as Guns N Roses & Led Zeppelin but Heavy Metal is just screaming, noise, loads of feedback, distortion and completely unintelligable lyrics http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wacko.gif Some D&B is fantastic, some is absolutely dire. Miler 0
QUOTE (brianmole)Classical music gets on my t1ts, too pretentious... It is also evolving and has a huge number of followers, so worth exploring Heavy Metal - there are some great rock tunes around On all genres, here is my opinion Jazz - generally good, can become a touch repetetive Trance - to much like humming underwater/wasp buzzing in your face. People dance to it like there is a wasp in front of their face as well. House - a cross between humming underwater and terrible "vocals" if at all existent. R&B - older stuff is good (Marvin Gaye etc), some of the newer stuff is good as well - very dancey and catchy. A lot of it is bland in my opinion though Hip Hop - some songs are catchy, an in betweeny genre of R&B and Rap though Rap - Eminem and a lot of newer Hip hop. It's pretty empty imo. Talks of living in the "ghetto" and so on and encourages violence. Admittedly not all do but the vast majority I hear is. D&B - again very repetetive, but I agree, the latin stuff can be rather good Heavy metal - there are great rock tunes about but, theres rock and there's heavy metal. I dont particularly know much about the Sex Pistols, Led Zeppelin and the like, but from what I gather, they actually made music as opposed to this new-found craze of screaming/wailing/screeching down a microphone to a background of seemingly unco-ordinated instruments quickly followed by the showmanship of being sick on stage purposely and hitting each other. It seems the followers of this music are only interested in causing grief, damage and harm to other people and/or their belongings. I vehemently oppose people of this calibre as I said before as not only is the music undeniably bad (personal opinion http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif ) but the what "sub-culture" which it stands for is twice as bad. Anyway, that's a younger person's view of music (although, I consider myself to be different from todays youth in terms of taste in (current) music anyway!). http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif I hope I haven't offended anyone - particularly in the last section! funkymook 0
Pick a genre you don't like, or know nothing about and work out a short set - you can bet that if you had spend a few evenings at home going through some Rap, C&W, Jazz, Reggae, Metal, Trance etc etc then you'll find some tracks you actually think are OK, and trusting your own taste and DJ experience would soon have a list of tunes that would work ...think they should be posted as well - would be really interesting to see what a Rap expert thinks of a non Rap fans playlist etc.... So to start with, I know nothing about Trance, never played any, haven't a clue - so I'll beg steal or borrow some CD's, pick out tracks I like or think would work and post say 5 or 6 of them for folk to comment on..... http://www.indieretrodj.com http://www.souldisco.co.uk

jackwabbit 0
QUOTE (speedy @ Jan 3 2005, 06:50 PM) Rap is crap Full stop end of story! couldn’t agree more with you Speedy, Drum & Bass is just as bad. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/pooh.gif We were doing a regular slot in a pub for a while & one of the bar staff kept asking for Drum & Bass, I had a look on the web & managed to download the top ten D&B at that time. Skillz 0
I voted for Country & Western, simpley just http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/pooh.gif And the only reason everyone hates Rap is becuase they are brain washed into listening to all the http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/pooh.gif such as Eminem, 50 Cent, Ja Fool, Fat Joe, and they rest of them fools If you actualy listened to real Rap music they most of you would probley like it becuase they dont talk about sex, drugs, guns and violence. They talk about real issues happening around the world that effect people and cultures. Also "Rap is something you do, Hip-Hop is something you live" a quote from KRS-One, one of the greats of Rap. Rap is a genre, Hip-Hop is a life style and most people get them mixed up http://www.lyrictricity.info/shogun/smiles/wave.gif
Jimbo55 0
I dont like anything being played that is distorted, Over driven, Clipped, Oh and feed back. I have been djing since the mid seventies and have played loads of rap from grandmaster flash to krs 1 and i still do. I know that there are loads of djs on here who play rap too , eminem and dre has brought rap on leaps and bounds after the stagnating gangsta stuff from the 90s. Jay z is huge and snoop sells tons of records , I really like Gunshot. Krs1 s lyrics are a bit more suited to american problems than brit ones , but hey do us a favour and dont get annoyed just because some people dont like the same music as you ! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/cool.gif I will try anything, once! Skillz 0
It wasnt that i was getting annoyed it was that nearly everyone was refering to rap with Eminem which i was just trying to say that there is more to Rap than these few artists, sorry if it came out wrong http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

juski 0
'Dance' cover versions & remixes of 80s songs make my skin crawl . Looped, filtered and/or badly re-sung... give it a rest & do something new. RnB..... Yeah. Yeah. Uhuh. Yeah. One time. Uhuh. Bling. Wassup? Where the heck does the term 'R&B' come from anyway? I thought Eric Clapton was once regarded as a 'ryhthm & blues man'... so er... how did 'RnB' replace real music? Oh - and let's not forget... anything featuring that Carzy Froggie http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/188.gif Infact - anything which is likely to be on constant rotation on commercial radio. I hear it at work... so by the time it comes out I'm already sick to death of hearing it. But having said that I can put my prejudices aside for a while if I know it's going to work in the context of a disco. Another good thread idea might be... damo1023 0
the only thing i dont really like is the country and western. even as a young one on here i dont mind classical as its what we used to use at a&r cambridge to test the expensive audio systems. when you hear the full picture it really is quite something. again with the d&b how many of you have been out to a proper nite and experienced it properly rather than the top 10's which are so quickly outdated and quite often not very good anyway. some of the nites i have been to have had a far better atmosphere than your local cheesy club. anyway just my 2 pennys worth and not looking to put anyones nose outta joint with it dmr-entertainments@hotmail.co.uk
Corabar Steve 0
QUOTE (Miler @ Jan 4 2005, 06:47 PM) Heavy metal - there are great rock tunes about but, theres rock and there's heavy metal. I vehemently oppose people of this calibre as I said before as not only is the music undeniably bad (personal opinion http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif ) but the what "sub-culture" which it stands for is twice as bad. This sounds like an ignorant & uninformed view based entirely on something read in a tabloid Sunday paper. For starters I think it would come as a shock to John Lydon to find out that he used to sing in a Heavy Metal band. From your description I would say you're describing Slipknot, who are the exception rather than the rule & anyway they only do what they do on stage to cause controversy & therefore gain publicity (any publicity is good publicity remember). Small minded tabloid journalists can't resist & take the bait. I read a while back (in Q if memory serves, so they at least can't be accused of being biased, covering virtually all types of music like they do) that Rock/Metal gigs had some of the least amounts of trouble/violence at gigs as opposed to Rap & R&B which were both among the highest. Extreme Metal will always sound like a racket to people who don't like it (& for that matter most people who like other sub genres of HM), but then again can't this be said of other genres such as Trad Jazz & Drum & Bass or Jungle which all sound very much like a series of random noises to me. Seems like you're tarring all Rock/Metal with the same brush so to speak. For example I could say all Rap/R&B/Hip Hop is mysogonistic, biggoted. violent & druggy judging by some of the lyrics I've heard, but I know this not to be true. It's always the most controversial that will get the attention often eclipsing the most talented as a result. Steve... Mad bad & dangerous to know Better to study for one hour with the wise, than to drink wine with the foolish.
